Oral health in Africa: a neglected public health priority.

Oral health in Africa is a significantly neglected public health priority, impacting approximately 480 million people (43.7% of the WHO African region population). Despite its critical link to general well-being and other Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), the continent faces a high burden of conditions like untreated dental caries, severe periodontal disease, and life-threatening conditions such as Noma. Key challenges include a historic lack of prioritisation in health policy and resource allocation, a critically under-resourced oral health workforce (ratio of 0.44 professionals per 10,000 pe

Science-Informed Health Policies for Oral and Systemic Health.

Oral, dental and craniofacial (ODC) health has a profound impact on general health and welfare throughout life, yet US dentists and physicians operate across misaligned silos. This protracted division limits access to optimal health, supports fee for services, and exacerbates health disparities. Early in the 20th century, the most frequent dental therapy was tooth extraction: removed infected teeth were substituted by prosthetic appliances - commonly, dentures or nothing. Most adults assumed becoming edentulous was a normal corollary of aging. With the discovery of penicillin and other antibio

Resources for oral health in Africa.

Oral health in Africa is often overlooked despite its substantial impact on overall health and well-being. Currently, Africa has a very high prevalence of dental diseases, including untreated dental caries in permanent teeth, severe periodontal disease and oral cancer. Dental human resources are also very low, with dentists ranging from 1.77 to 0.03 per 10,000 population across the continent. The number of technicians also varies across the continent from 0.17 to.0.1 per 10,000 population. Southern Africa has the highest median dental assistants and therapists per 10,000 population ratio (0.2)

The interconnection of oral and systemic health.

Oral health is increasingly recognized for its interconnectedness to systemic health, with emerging evidence highlighting their bidirectional relationship. Oral diseases, affecting approximately 3.5 billion people globally, disproportionately burden low- and middle-income countries due to inadequate healthcare access. Recognizing oral health as a component of overall well-being emphasizes the need for integrative approaches linking dentistry and medicine. This Collection presents clinical and experimental studies addressing oral-systemic health connections. Clinical trials evaluated temporoman

[Arthroplasty and oral health-an overview].

Despite limited evidence for a preoperative dental screening examination and needs-based focal rehabilitation, as well as the need for antibiotic prophylaxis prior to invasive dental procedures, oral health is and remains a relevant topic in arthroplasty. The aspect of oral health should not be neglected in the future in connection with periprosthetic infections and should continue to be the subject of intensive research. The frequency of conspicuous dental findings in middle and old age underlines the importance of this problem. A dental examination prior to arthroplasty implantation can gene

Oral Health and the Frail Elderly.

INTRODUCTION: The relationships between oral health conditions and frailty have rarely been explored. A systematic review of frailty components and oral health concluded that differences in study population endpoint criteria and study design cannot establish a relationship between frailty and oral health. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the distribution of the OHAT (Oral Health Assessment Tool) score in a population of frail subjects and to assess associated parameters (age, socio-economic status, living conditions, education level, nutritional habits, cognitive functioning, autonomy).

Nutrition and oral health in Africa.

Poverty, low birth weight, low life expectation at birth, widespread malnutrition, numerous endemic infections, little or no access to safe water, poor oral hygiene, deplorable environmental sanitation and political instability among other problems, characterise the lives of many Africans, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. In African countries undergoing rapid urbanisation, health problems associated with undernutrition and overnutrition coexist, and these result from lifestyle changes which promote physical inactivity, increased consumption of fats and refined carbohydrates, as well as abus

Oral health and oral health-related quality of life among older adults receiving home health care services: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: To map the literature on subjective and objective oral health indicators and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in older adults receiving home health care services (HHCS). BACKGROUND: The proportion of older adults in need of HHCS will increase in the coming years. Previous studies indicate that frail and dependent older adults are at increased risk for oral diseases, due to challenges with daily oral hygiene and regular access to dental services. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four databases were searched in November 2020 for relevant literature. Search terms included a compreh

Exploring the Oral Resistome: From Metagenomics to Precision Oral Health.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents one of the foremost global public health threats, undermining the efficacy of antibiotic therapies across all clinical disciplines, including dentistry. The oral cavity, housing one of the most diverse microbial ecosystems in the human body, contains a largely underappreciated reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), collectively defined as the oral resistome. This review synthesises current evidence on the oral resistome across five thematic areas. First, we contextualise the global burden of AMR, highlighting its scale and implications for or

[Oral care and oral health during and after cancer treatment].

One in two people in the Netherlands will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and this number is increasing. At the same time, cancer survival has increased. Oral care professionals are therefore seeing more and more people who are being or have been treated for cancer. Cancer treatment increases the risk of temporary and permanent adverse effects in the perioral area, such as hyposalivation, xerostomia, mucositis, infections, pain, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, osteoradionecrosis and caries. In addition, myelosuppression can occur, causing patients (often temporarily) to

Oral health literacy and associated oral conditions: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The authors systematically reviewed the scientific evidence regarding an association between oral health literacy (OHL) and oral conditions. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors performed an electronic search of 8 databases up through October 2016, as well as a manual search. The authors included studies in which the investigators evaluated oral conditions and measured OHL through a validated tool and studies in which OHL was an explanatory variable. The authors assessed risk of bias by using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS: The authors included 10 cross-sectional studies.

Examining the association between oral health and oral HPV infection.

Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the cause of 40% to 80% of oropharyngeal cancers; yet, no published study has examined the role of oral health in oral HPV infection, either independently or in conjunction with other risk factors. This study examined the relation between oral health and oral HPV infection and the interactive effects of oral health, smoking, and oral sex on oral HPV infection. Our analyses comprised 3,439 participants ages 30 to 69 years for whom data on oral HPV and oral health were available from the nationally representative 2009-2010 National Health and Nutritio

Oral health considerations in older women receiving oral bisphosphonate therapy.

Recent reports of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) have increased awareness of oral health in patients receiving osteoporosis therapy. This study describes the demographic, oral health, and clinical characteristics of a contemporary population of women aged 50 and older undergoing oral bisphosphonate treatment who returned a mailed questionnaire pertaining to dental symptoms. The study, as previously reported, was conducted within Kaiser Permanente Northern California, a large, integrated healthcare delivery system. The cohort included 7,909 women with bisphosphonate exp

Mental Health and Oral Health in a Nationally Representative Cohort.

Evidence connects mental illness to other adverse health conditions, including oral health. However, longitudinal associations between mental and oral health remain understudied. We aimed to examine mental health-oral health associations prospectively in a nationally representative US cohort. Data were from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study. The Global Appraisal of Individual Needs-Short Screener measured 3 types of mental health symptoms: internalizing, externalizing, and substance use problems. Six self-reported oral health conditions related to periodontal disease

Tobacco and oral health--the role of the world health organization.

In addition to several other chronic diseases, tobacco use is a primary cause of many oral diseases and adverse oral conditions. For example, tobacco is a risk factor for oral cancer, periodontal disease, and congenital defects in children whose mothers smoke during pregnancy. The epidemic of tobacco use is one of the greatest threats to global health; sadly the future appears worse because of the globalization of marketing. The World Health Organization (WHO) has strengthened the work for effective control of tobacco use. At the World Health Assembly in May 2003 the Member States agreed on a
