A concept analysis of oral hygiene care in dependent older adults.

AIM: To report a concept analysis of oral hygiene care. BACKGROUND: Oral hygiene care, as it is provided to older patients in hospital and long-term care settings by nurses and their delegates, has the potential to contribute to the oral health of patients while preventing aspiration pneumonia as well as periodontitis, which itself has been associated with several systemic diseases. However, the state of oral cleanliness in such patients tends to be poor and despite the existence of guidelines, nursing care practices may be inadequate and not reflective of recent advances in knowledge. Oral mucositis due to cancer treatments. Orodental hygiene and ice cubes.

(1) Oral mucositis is a frequent adverse effect of cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Fluorouracil, radiotherapy and conditioning regimens for haematopoietic stem cell grafting often cause severe oral mucositis, preventing patients from drinking and eating normally. (2) A randomised trial suggests that this complication can be attenuated by timely orodental care such as extraction of damaged teeth, treatment of tooth decay, and care of trauma due to dentures. (3) In 3 randomised controlled trials involving about 200 patients at high risk of severe oral mucositis, sucking ice during chemothe

Comparison of modes of oral hygiene instruction in improving gingival health.

195 Hong Kong Chinese employees from a single company participated in a 10-month longitudinal study on the effects of various modes of delivery of oral hygiene messages on their gingival health. Subjects were allocated to one of the following modes of oral hygiene education: (1) personal instruction; (2) self-education manual; (3) video; (4) a combination of 2 or more of these modes of instruction. Scaling or any other form of periodontal treatment was not given throughout the study period. Full mouth clinical examinations were carried out using a Williams Periodontal probe to examine for the

Dental and oral hygiene student's knowledge of HIV infection and AIDS.

A survey was conducted to assess the knowledge of 30 oral hygiene (OH I & II) and 79 dental students (BCHD III & VI) on HIV infection and AIDS. A questionnaire consisting of twenty-nine questions based on the 'agree-disagree' format was prepared for this study. Clinical slides were projected to assess students' ability to identify oral manifestations of HIV infection. Most students agreed that HIV-sero-positive people were entitled to the same dignity and respect as those who were suffering from other illnesses. Students were concerned about treating sero-positive patients. They would preferab

Cigarette smoking, oral hygiene and periodontal health in Swedish army conscripts.

Possible dissimilarities between smokers and nonsmokers regarding oral hygiene, gingivitis, periodontal pocketing and alveolar bone loss were studied in a sample of 134 army conscripts. Compared to nonsmokers, smokers had a higher plaque index and greater severity of gingivitis, while no differences were found concerning pocket depth and bone loss. It could be demonstrated that the difference regarding gingivitis disappeared when a check was made for plaque values. It still remains to be explained why plaque deposition is more pronounced in smokers.

Oral hygiene and gingival health in Danish dental students and faculty.

This survey attempted to determine the status of oral cleanliness and gingival health in 150 dental students and 101 faculty members in a dental school. Without advance notice, plaque deposits were scored, using the Plaque Index System, and gingival health was determined using the criteria of the Gingival Index System. The 1st-year students had the poorest hygiene and gingival health. An improvement (P less than 0.01) was noted in the 2nd-year students who were still not in clinical training but had completed a course in preventive dentistry including oral hygiene techniques. Further improveme

[Oral Hygiene at the First Health Station in Peiping (1925-1938)].

The First Health Station in Peiping was officially established in 1925 with the support and promotion of John B. Grant, an American sanitarian expert teaching in Peking Union Medical College at that time. Oral public health served as one of its foundational initiatives, including dental disease screening for specific populations, diagnosis and treatment, and some oral hygiene publicity and education. This represented the first oral public health practice in the Beijing area during the Republican period, jointly carried out by the government and a public health institution. However, this practi

Oral hygiene and cancer risk: emerging evidence and public health perspectives.

Oral hygiene, traditionally regarded as a pillar of dental care, is increasingly recognized for its broader relevance to systemic health, including cancer prevention. Accumulating evidence suggests that poor oral hygiene may contribute to carcinogenesis through pathways involving chronic inflammation, microbial dysbiosis, and immune dysregulation. This review synthesizes epidemiological studies linking indicators of poor oral health—such as periodontal disease and tooth loss—to elevated risks of head and neck, gastrointestinal, and other cancers. It also explores biological mechanisms that pla

Poor Oral Hygiene: A Hidden Risk Factor for Helicobacter pylori Infection.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) initially enters the human body through the mouth. The correlation between oral health and H. pylori infection status remains a topic of debate in the scientific literature. To elucidate the relationships between H. pylori infection and oral hygiene status and habits, we performed a cross-sectional study among dyspeptic patients. METHODS: Data were collected from 362 subjects with dyspepsia symptoms who underwent the 13C-urea breath test (13C-UBT) and the H. pylori antigen test (HPS) to test for gastric and oral H. pylori infections between May and
