Bluetongue is an arthropod-borne viral disease affecting both wild and domestic ruminants, with clinical signs most frequently observed in sheep, cattle, and goats. The causative agent, bluetongue virus (BTV), belongs to the genus Orbivirus within the family Sedoreoviridae and has a global distribution. To date, 31 distinct BTV serotypes have been identified. The present study was conducted between 2015 and 2017 in the Eastern Mediterranean provinces of Hatay, Kahramanmaraş, and Osmaniye in Türkiye. Using both serological and molecular methods, the study investigated the prevalence of BTV in d

International cooperation in arbovirus research became increasingly prominent shortly after it was found in the early 1940's, that antigenic relationships existed among certain viruses isolated in different areas of thw world. The interest of a number of scientists and of a private organization led to the establishment of an international information exchange and to the preparation of an international catalogue of arboviruses including certain other viruses of vertebrates. International cooperation was fostered by the interest taken in these agents by the World Health Organization and the crea

Background: Arboviruses, transmitted to humans and animals by blood-feeding arthropods, pose significant public health risks. This study investigates the types, distribution, and epidemiology of arboviruses in the central Yuxi region of Yunnan Province, providing crucial data for the prevention and control of mosquito-borne diseases. Methods: In 2015, mosquitoes were collected from Tonghai County, Huaning County, Jiangchuan District, and Chengjiang County in Yuxi using light traps. The mosquitoes were homogenized, and virus isolation was performed by inoculating the homogenates onto BHK-21 (ba

BACKGROUND: African horse sickness (AHS) is a devastating viral disease of equids that was first recorded in 1327. Currently, prevention and control of the disease are based on attenuated vaccines and midge control. It has been shown that attenuated Orbivirus vaccines are not always safe as they may reverse to virulence.
OBJECTIVES: In the Emirate of Dubai, a vaccination experiment was carried out with an inactivated AHS vaccine produced at the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory (CVRL), Dubai, UAE to investigate the humoral antibody response of AHS-naïve horses to this vaccine. Our vaccin

African horse sickness virus (AHSV) is a virus species in the genus Orbivirus of the family Reoviridae causing African Horse Sickness (AHS) in equids with a mortality of about 95% in naïve horses. AHS causes serious losses in developing countries where horses play a central role in draft power and transportation. There are nine AHSV serotypes inducing no or low cross-neutralizing antibodies. AHSV is spread by biting Culicoides midges. AHS is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa, and a serious threat outside Africa, since Culicoides species in moderate climate conditions are spreading the closely rela

Bluetongue virus (Reoviridae; Orbivirus, BTV), which is usually transmitted by biting midges, affects wild and domestic ruminants worldwide, thereby causing an economically important disease. Recently, a putative new BTV strain was isolated from contaminated vaccine batches. In this study, we investigated the genomic and clinical characteristics of this isolate, provisionally designated BTV-28. Phylogenetic analysis of BTV-28 segment 2 (Seg-2) showed that it is related to Seg-2 from BTV serotypes 4, 10, 11, 17, 20 and 24, sharing 64%-66% identity in nucleotide sequences (nt) and 59%-62% in ami

A single-tube nested reverse transcriptase (nRT) polymerase chain reaction (nRT-PCR) was developed and evaluated for detection of palyam serogroup orbiviruses ribonucleic acid (RNA) in cell cultures and clinical samples. A pair of outer primers (pal1 and pal2), designed from genome segment three of Chuzan virus of the palyam viruses serogroup, resulted in amplification of a primary 660-base pair (bp) PCR product. Using a pair of internal (nested) primers (pal3 and pal4), the nRT-PCR produced a 350-bp PCR product. The primary and the nested PCR products were amplified from RNA extracted from Su

Bluetongue (BT) and epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) are noncontagious, insect-transmitted diseases of domestic and wild ruminants caused by related but distinct viruses. There are significant gaps in our scientific knowledge and available countermeasures to control an outbreak of orbivirus-induced disease, whether BT or EHD. Both BT virus (BTV) and EHD virus (EHDV) cause hemorrhagic fevers in susceptible ruminants; however, BT is principally a disease of domestic livestock whereas EHD is principally a disease of certain species of wild, non-African ungulates, notably white-tailed deer. Insects have a rich diversity of RNA viruses that can either cause acute infections or persist in host populations without visible symptoms. The melon fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Tephritidae) causes substantial economic losses through infestation of diverse cucurbit and other crops. Of Indomalayan origin, it is now established in many tropical regions of the world. The virome diversity of Z. cucurbitae is largely unknown across large parts of its distribution, including the Indian subcontinent. We have analysed three transcriptomes each of one field-collected and one laboratory-reared Z. cucur

In Romania, St. Drăgănescu et al., Miszkolczy et al., based on clinical and epidemiological observations, affirmed the possible presence of "tick-borne encephalitis (TBE)". However, critical retrospective evaluation of certain others' papers published through 1958-1971 reveal some uncommon features. By way of example: a very high incidence of CF- and HI-antibodies in acute and chronic CNS illnesses as well as in general population; replication in nucleus and maturation in mitochondria of a strain of "TBE virus" isolated from a patient CSF; isolation of "group B arbovirus" from Ixodes persulcat

In summer 2024, Western Europe experienced extensive outbreaks of bluetongue virus Serotype 3 (BTV-3), a Culicoides-borne orbivirus. Clinical disease was first detected in August 2024 in one of two Belgian zoos, predominantly affecting European bison (Bison bonasus) and American bison (Bison bison). These species showed high morbidity, two fatalities, and severe multisystemic lesions at necropsy. This outbreak coincided with reemergence of BTV-8 and increasing reports of emerging BTV-12 and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) circulation in Europe. Following the outbreak, samples from 1

The Australian backyard mosquito, Aedes notoscriptus, is a highly urbanised pest species that has invaded New Zealand and the USA. Importantly, Ae. notoscriptus has been implicated as a vector of Ross River virus, a common and arthritogenic arbovirus in Australia, and is a laboratory vector of numerous other pathogenic viruses, including West Nile, yellow fever, and Zika viruses. To further explore live viruses harboured by field populations of Ae. notoscriptus and, more specifically, assess the genetic diversity of its virome, we processed 495 pools, comprising a total of 6,674 female Ae. not

Tumors and cancer cell lines exhibit varying levels of activation in interferon (IFN) pathways and expression of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs). This heterogeneity correlates with differential susceptibility to oncolytic viruses (OVs), which exploit impaired IFN responses to replicate in and kill malignant cells preferentially. A current challenge in oncolytic virotherapy (OVT) is to develop strategies that selectively inhibit IFN responses in malignant cells, thereby expanding the therapeutic range of OVs. This study proposes leveraging the vulnerability of tumor cells to BH3 mimetic compounds a

BACKGROUND AND AIM: African horse sickness (AHS) is a non-contagious, high mortality, and insect-borne disease caused by a double-stranded RNA virus from the genus Orbivirus. The study aimed to develop inactivated vaccines serotype 1 inactivated AHS vaccine (IAV) and to compare the effect of IAV on antibody responses in young naïve horses and adult horses pre-immunized with live-attenuated AHS virus (AHSV) serotypes 1, 3, and 4 live-attenuated vaccine (LAV).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 27 horses were vaccinated in two trials. Twelve AHS naïve young horses and 15 adult horses were divide

BACKGROUND: Hematophagous Culicoides spp. biting midges are of great agricultural importance as livestock, equine, and wildlife pests and as vectors of the orbiviruses bluetongue, epizootic hemorrhagic disease and African horse sickness. To obtain a blood meal, midges deposit saliva containing allergens, proteases, and anti-hemostatic factors, into the dermis to facilitate feeding. Infected midges deposit virus along with the myriad of salivary proteins during feeding. The extreme efficiency with which midges are able to transmit orbiviruses is not clearly understood, as much is still unknown
