Mismatch in perceptions of the quality of supervision and research data management as an area of concern: Results from a university-wide survey of the research integrity culture at a Belgian university.

Researchers of KU Leuven, a large Belgian university, were invited to complete a bespoke questionnaire assessing their attitudes toward research integrity and the local research culture, with specific emphasis on the supervision of junior researchers. A total of 7,353 invitations were sent via e-mail and 1,866 responses were collected (25.3% response rate), of which 1,723 responses are reported upon here. Some of the findings are relevant to the broader research community. Whereas supervisors evaluated their supervision of junior researchers almost unanimously as positive, fewer supervisees ev

Embracing the DIGNITY of Resident Relationships: A Case Study of the Decision-Making in Aging and Dementia for Autonomy (DIGNITY) Protocol.

Public policies governing U.S. nursing homes emphasize resident rights, autonomy, and person-centered care, yet translating these principles into everyday practice remains challenging - particularly for residents living with dementia whose preferences involve perceived risk. Regulatory requirements, liability concerns, and inconsistent interpretations of decision-making capacity often constrain staff ability to honor resident choice. This case study examines the application of the Decision-making in Aging and Dementia for Autonomy (DIGNITY) protocol, a structured, evidence-based framework desi

'They're waiting for us to break before they listen': healthcare workers' perspectives on how to mitigate moral distress in British Columbia, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: Moral distress among healthcare workers can have serious repercussions, including reduced morale, decreased quality of care, apathy, burnout, and workforce attrition. While much research has documented moral distress, few studies have considered how to effectively mitigate it. This study sought to enhance understanding of moral distress by exploring not only who is affected and why, but also examining strategies for addressing it. METHODS: An online survey was conducted with primary care healthcare professionals in British Columbia, Canada, from October to December 2022, including

Institutionalizing integrated treatment for concurrent disorders: creating new organizational discourse.

BACKGROUND: The high overlap of mental health and substance use problems in the Canadian health care system and the subsequent demand for more effective services for clients with these high-risk issues have stimulated the debate on their integrated treatment. Although the idea of integration has been endorsed by decision makers at both programs and system levels, little attention has been paid to factors that have facilitated this process. PURPOSE: In this article, the processes by which organizational texts, language, metaphors, and symbols have facilitated institutionalization of integrated

Initial leadership concerns and availability of tobacco cessation services moderate changes in employee-reported concerns about tobacco-free workplace policy implementation over time.

Tobacco-free workplace policies (TFWPs) are underused evidence-based interventions that reduce the elevated use of tobacco among substance use treatment center (SUTC) employees and patients. SUTC employees' anticipated concerns about stakeholder pushback are barriers to TFWP adoption. Examination of discrepancies between anticipated and actualized employee-reported TFWP concerns arising from coworkers, patients, and community members in the context of leadership concerns and tobacco cessation care availability for employees may inform strategies to increase TFWP uptake. This study analyzed cha

The impact of job burnout on public service motivation and the moderating role of perceived organizational support: a survey among resident work team members in Chinese villages.

Since 2013, the Chinese government has promoted rural revitalization by deploying resident work team members to villages. As policy implementers within the governance framework of China, resident work team members' levels of public service motivation (PSM) influence the strategic outcomes of rural revitalization. Employing hierarchical regression analyses and moderation tests, this study provides an empirical examination of resident work team members in the Wuling Mountains region of China. The findings indicate that the overall level of PSM among resident work team members is high, yet job bu

Application of the industrial hygiene hierarchy of controls to prioritize and promote safer methods of pest control: a case study.

In 2005, the California Department of Public Health, Occupational Health Branch (OHB) investigated an incident of pesticide exposure and identified 27 vineyard workers who became ill due to drift of cyfluthrin, a pesticide being applied to a neighboring orange field to control katydids. Another pest, citrus thrips, was also present in the field. We investigated safer alternatives for katydid and thrips control to prevent illness due to pesticide exposure and used the industrial hygiene hierarchy of controls to prioritize the control methods. OHB evaluated factors that contributed to pesticide

Cultural determinants and strategic priorities for medication safety in acute care: a multidisciplinary Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Organizational culture, defined as the shared values, assumptions, and norms that influence behavior within organizations, is widely recognized as a key determinant of patient safety in healthcare systems. Within acute care settings, medication safety represents a critical component of patient safety and depends on the ability of healthcare professionals to recognize risks, communicate openly, and intervene before errors result in patient harm. However, medication use is inherently interdisciplinary and requires effective coordination between multiple professional groups. Understan

Constructing a middle-range theory to explain the uptake of hepatitis C tests in prison.

BACKGROUND: Realist evaluation is increasingly used in healthcare research, and theories can provide plausible explanations of why interventions work or do not work in certain circumstances such as the effect of the opt-out hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing policy in English prisons. AIM: To present the process of constructing the middle-range theories (MRTs) developed as part of an evaluation of hepatitis C test uptake in an English prison as a resource for researchers using realist evaluation. DISCUSSION: MRTs are propositions that can explain a particular behaviour or outcome. In this evalu

Emerging infectious diseases: Focus on infection control issues for novel coronaviruses (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-CoV and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-CoV), hemorrhagic fever viruses (Lassa and Ebola), and highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses, A(H5N1) and A(H7N9).

Over the past several decades, we have witnessed the emergence of many new infectious agents, some of which are major public threats. New and emerging infectious diseases which are both transmissible from patient-to-patient and virulent with a high mortality include novel coronaviruses (SARS-CoV, MERS-CV), hemorrhagic fever viruses (Lassa, Ebola), and highly pathogenic avian influenza A viruses, A(H5N1) and A(H7N9). All healthcare facilities need to have policies and plans in place for early identification of patients with a highly communicable diseases which are highly virulent, ability to im

Ebola Virus Disease: Ethics and Emergency Medical Response Policy.

Caring for patients affected with Ebola virus disease (EVD) while simultaneously preventing EVD transmission represents a central ethical challenge of the EVD epidemic. To address this challenge, we propose a model policy for resuscitation and emergent procedure policy of patients with EVD and set forth ethical principles that lend support to this policy. The policy and principles we propose bear relevance beyond the EVD epidemic, offering guidance for the care of patients with other highly contagious, virulent, and lethal diseases. The policy establishes (1) a limited code status for patients
