Acute pancreatitis induced by acute organophosphate poisoning.

A 32-year-old male with acute organophosphate poisoning developed hyperglycaemia, glycosuria and ketonuria soon after admission to hospital. Serum amylase estimations suggested a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. He required insulin therapy to control his hyperglycaemia and the organophosphate poisoning was successfully managed by artificial ventilation, an infusion of pralidoxime and intermittent atropine. He was discharged on the 17th hospital day with no permanent physical sequelae.

Adult and embryo responses to organophosphate pesticides: azodrin.

Azodrin was applied to adult embryo chickens, Chukar Partridge, and Bobwhite Quail. Chronic exposure of adult birds to Azodrin mixed in their feed indicated that no a priori predictions could be made about one species based on the results of another; each had a different no effect (MACT) level. The chickens were between 25 and 100 ppm, the Chukar Partridge 5 and 25 ppm, and the Bobwhite quail less than 1.25 ppm. The chicken adults were most resistant, and the quail were least resistant to chronic exposure to Azodrin. Yolk-injected Azodrin caused the embryos of all three species to develop abno

Chronic Exposure to Organophosphates Pesticides and Risk of Metabolic Disorder in Cohort from Pakistan and Cameroon.

(1) Background: Organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) are major chemicals used in agriculture for eradication of insecticides/pesticides. Unfortunately, the longtime exposure of human beings to OPPs could lead to metabolic disorder such as high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, overweight or dyslipidemia. The aim of this research is to evaluate the possible metabolic dysregulations as a consequence of chronic OPPs exposure to individuals in Cameroon and Pakistan. (2) Methods: Blood samples were collected from 300 participants in each country, into ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) tubes. The sa

Assessment of Resistance to Organophosphates and Pyrethroids in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae): Do Synergists Affect Mortality?

Aedes aegypti (L.) is the primary vector of Zika, dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya viruses. Insecticides used in mosquito control can help prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases. However, it is essential to determine insecticide resistance (IR) status before control measures are undertaken. Only the most effective insecticides should be used to avoid ineffective control and/or promotion of IR. Pyrethroids and organophosphates are the most commonly used insecticides for mosquito control. Here, the efficacy of two active ingredients (AIs; permethrin [pyrethroid], chlorpyrifos [organoph

Point-of-care identification of organophosphates in gastric juice by ambient mass spectrometry in emergency settings.

BACKGROUND: For emergency management, it is important to promptly identify the organophosphate ingested by self-poisoning patients since different organophosphates cause intoxication through different mechanisms and require different therapeutic strategies. This study aimed at the development of a point-of-care ambient mass spectrometric approach for rapid identification of organophosphate(s) in gastric juice for emergency management. METHODS: Six organophosphate insecticides that are commonly ingested by self-poisoning patients in Taiwan were examined. The sample solutions were prepared and

In vitro protection of red blood cell acetylcholinesterase by metoclopramide from inhibition by organophosphates (paraoxon and mipafox).

Metoclopramide (MCP) is a dopamine receptor antagonist and serotonin receptor agonist widely used as an antiemetic and gastric prokinetic drug. In addition, MCP is a reversible inhibitor of cholinesterases from the human central nervous system and blood, and may have a red blood cell (RBC) acetylcholinesterase (AChE) protective effect against inhibition by organophosphates. The purpose of the study was to quantify 'in vitro', by means of the IC50 shift, the extent of MCP conferred protection, by using paraoxon (POX) and mipafox (MPFX) as inhibitors. Paraoxon is a widely used non-neuropathic or

Occupational risk of organophosphates and other chemical and radiative exposure in the aircraft cabin: A systematic review.

Occupational exposure to oil fumes, organophosphates, halogenated flame retardants, and other volatile and semi-volatile contaminants is a concern within the aviation industry. There is no current consensus on the risk attributed to exposure to these chemical classes within the aircraft cabin. Contaminant concentrations rarely exceed conventional air quality guidelines, but concerns have been raised about these guidelines' applicability within the aircraft environment. This systematic review, the largest and most comprehensive completed to date on the subject matter, aims to synthesize the exi

Effects of organophosphates and nerve growth factor on muscarinic receptor binding number in rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells.

Muscarinic receptor binding in PC12 cells is influenced by both nerve growth factor (NGF) and organophosphates. Treatment of PC12 cells with a single dose of NGF (50 ng, 7S NGF/ml) increased [3H]N-methylscopolamine ([3H]-NMS) binding sites approximately two-fold at 48 hr but did not change the Kd for this ligand. Exposure of PC12 cells to soman, 50 microM, decreased [3H]-NMS binding in both undifferentiated and NGF-treated cells; however, decreases in muscarinic binding induced by the organophosphate were only minimal after the first hour after treatment and were maximal at about 24 hr. Intermediate Syndrome Due to Organophosphate Poisoning: A Case Report.

Organophosphates, also known as phosphate esters, are a category of pesticide compounds that function by indirectly inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase (AChE). AChE is responsible for breaking down acetylcholine (ACh) at the neuromuscular junction into acetic acid and choline. These compounds cause various clinical presentations upon acute toxicity, among which intermediate syndrome (IMS) exhibits an unpredictable course. This report describes the case of a farmer who ingested monocrotophos and ethanol in a suicide attempt, leading to a prolonged stay in the hospit

Toxicity of the organophosphate insecticide sumithion to embryo and larvae of zebrafish.

Sumithion, a synthetic organophosphate, is widely used as an agricultural insecticide and for control of tiger bug (Cicindela spp.) in larval rearing for aquaculture. An experiment was conducted to examine the effects of sumithion on embryological and larval development of zebrafish Danio rerio. Fertilized egg (n = 100) and larvae (n = 100) were exposed to six concentrations of sumithion (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 mg L-1) in three replicates. LC50 values for embryos and larvae were calculated by probit analysis. The 24 h LC50 value of sumithion for embryo was 0.235 (0.079-0.428) mgL-1. Inc

TRPA1 channel mediates organophosphate-induced delayed neuropathy.

The organophosphate-induced delayed neuropathy (OPIDN), often leads to paresthesias, ataxia and paralysis, occurs in the late-stage of acute poisoning or after repeated exposures to organophosphate (OP) insecticides or nerve agents, and may contribute to the Gulf War Syndrome. The acute phase of OP poisoning is often attributed to acetylcholinesterase inhibition. However, the underlying mechanism for the delayed neuropathy remains unknown and no treatment is available. Here we demonstrate that TRPA1 channel (Transient receptor potential cation channel, member A1) mediates OPIDN. A variety of O

Comparison of current recommended regimens of atropinization in organophosphate poisoning.

Atropine is the mainstay of therapy in organophosphate (OP) toxicity, though research and consensus on dosing is lacking. In 2004, as reported by Eddleston et al. (J Toxicol Clin Toxicol 42(6):865-75, 2004), they noted variation in recommended regimens. We assessed revisions of original references, additional citations, and electronic sources to determine the current variability in atropine dosing recommendations. Updated editions of references from Eddleston et al.'s work, texts of Internal and Emergency Medicine, and electronic resources were reviewed for atropine dosing recommendations. For

Membrane bioreactor treatment of commonly used organophosphate pesticides.

Five pesticide formulations registered for use in Canada containing organophosphate-insecticide active ingredients azinphos-methyl, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, malathion and phorate were subjected to treatment by membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology. The target active ingredients were introduced to the MBR at ppm level concentrations. The biodegradation of these compounds was analyzed daily using selected ion monitoring gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS-SIM) following extraction of the analytes using solid-phase extraction (SPE). Amounts measuring 83 % to 98 % of the target analytes were
