A pilot study evaluating the effects of concussion on the ability to form cognitive maps for spatial orientation in adolescent hockey players.

OBJECTIVE: In this pilot study, we investigated the impact of a sport-related concussion (SRC) on the ability to form cognitive maps, mental representations of the environment that are critical for spatial orientation and navigation. PARTICIPANTS: We recruited 18 adolescent hockey players suffering from a SRC, and 19 age, sex and handedness-matched hockey players with no history of concussion. MAIN MEASURE: We asked participants to perform the Spatial Configuration Task (SCT), a computerized tool used to quantitatively measure the ability of the individuals to form cognitive maps. RESULTS:

Pushing attention to one side: Force field adaptation alters neural correlates of orienting and disengagement of spatial attention.

Sensorimotor adaptation to wedge prisms can alter the balance of attention between left and right space in healthy adults, and improve symptoms of spatial neglect after stroke. Here we asked whether the orienting of spatial attention to visual stimuli is affected by a different form of sensorimotor adaptation that involves physical perturbations of arm movement, rather than distortion of visual feedback. Healthy participants performed a cued discrimination task before and after they made reaching movements to a central target. A velocity-dependent force field pushed the hand aside during each

Multichanneled Nerve Guidance Conduit with Spatial Gradients of Neurotrophic Factors and Oriented Nanotopography for Repairing the Peripheral Nervous System.

Peripheral nerve injuries, causing sensory and motor impairment, affect a great number of patients annually. It is therefore important to incorporate different strategies to promote nerve healing. Among the treatment options, however, the efficacy of nerve conduits is often compromised by their lack of living cells, insufficient growth factors, and absence of the extracellular matrix (ECM)-like structure. To improve the functional recovery, we aimed to develop a natural biodegradable multichanneled scaffold characterized with aligned electrospun nanofibers and neurotrophic gradient (MC/AN/NG)

Orienting auditory spatial attention engages frontal eye fields and medial occipital cortex in congenitally blind humans.

What happens in vision-related cortical areas when congenitally blind (CB) individuals orient attention to spatial locations? Previous neuroimaging of sighted individuals has found overlapping activation in a network of frontoparietal areas including frontal eye fields (FEF), during both overt (with eye movement) and covert (without eye movement) shifts of spatial attention. Since voluntary eye movement planning seems irrelevant in CB, their FEF neurons should be recruited for alternative functions if their attentional role in sighted individuals is only due to eye movement planning. Pelvis-Based Three-Dimensional Hip Morphology in Japanese Women: Reference Distributions and Spatial Relationships of Femoral Head Position, Acetabular Orientation, and Coverage.

BACKGROUND: Conventional radiographic assessment of the hip primarily describes coronal acetabular coverage and does not fully characterize the three-dimensional spatial relationship among the pelvis, femoral head, and acetabulum. This study aimed to establish a pelvis-based three-dimensional morphometric reference framework for femoral head position, acetabular orientation, and regional coverage in Japanese women without clinically recognized hip disease. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 172 Japanese women (344 hips; mean age, 45.8 ± 10.7 years; range, 19-59 years)

Separation-Free Extracellular Vesicle Microribonucleic Acid Profiling Using Structurally Oriented Membrane Fusion and Spatially Confined Amplification.

Current methods for profiling of extracellular vesicle (EV) microRNAs (miRNAs) involve either PCR or sequencing analysis of EV lysate or delivery of RNA probes into EVs for in situ hybridization, which suffer from complex protocols and low delivery efficiency/limited sensitivity, respectively. To overcome this limitation, we present a programmable, aptamer-mediated membrane fusion strategy that integrates aptamer-functionalized liposomes with nucleic acid nanostructures-Dual-color, Bone-shaped Biosensor-loaded Aptamer-Liposome (DBS-Alip) for rapid, one-step, in situ detection of multiple tumor

Spatial equity-oriented accessibility assessment and optimal allocation of older adult care facilities in Beijing's central urban area.

INTRODUCTION: Population aging is a pressing global public health challenge. In aging-concentrated urban central areas, accelerated population aging has worsened the mismatch between supply and demand, irrational spatial layout, and inadequate accessibility of older adult care resources. METHODS: To improve public service equity, this study took Beijing's central urban area as the research object. Using data from the 2018 Beijing Special Census on Targeted Assistance for older adults and the 2020 Full-Coverage Census of older adult care Facilities, facility accessibility was evaluated using a

Patients with Parkinson's Disease Show Alteration in their Visuospatial Abilities and in their Egocentric and Allocentric Spatial Orientation Measured by Card Placing Tests.

BACKGROUND: Visuospatial skills are impaired in Parkinson's disease (PD). Other related skills exist, such as spatial orientation have been poorly studied. The egocentric (based on internal cues) and allocentric frameworks (based on external cues) are used in daily spatial orientation. Depending on PD onset, the allocentric framework may have a higher level of impairment in tremor-dominant and the egocentric one in akinetic-rigid. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate spatial orientation and visuospatial functions in PD patients and controls, and to assess whether their performance is related to disease dur

Effect of Masker Head Orientation, Listener Age, and Extended High-Frequency Sensitivity on Speech Recognition in Spatially Separated Speech.

OBJECTIVES: Masked speech recognition is typically assessed as though the target and background talkers are all directly facing the listener. However, background speech in natural environments is often produced by talkers facing other directions, and talker head orientation affects the spectral content of speech, particularly at the extended high frequencies (EHFs; >8 kHz). This study investigated the effect of masker head orientation and listeners' EHF sensitivity on speech-in-speech recognition and spatial release from masking in children and adults. DESIGN: Participants were 5- to 7-year-o

Head tilt-induced spatial orientation errors associated with functional vestibular disorders and motion sickness susceptibility during non-driving activities in a moving vehicle.

BackgroundPersistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) and motion sickness (MS) are associated with disturbances in spatial orientation related to altered multisensory integration. Impaired perception of upright orientation during head tilt may therefore occur in these conditions. Subjective visual vertical (SVV) and subjective visual horizontal (SVH) testing under head-tilted conditions provide quantitative measures of such perceptual errors. We hypothesized that headtilt-induced perceptual errors would be associated with PPPD and with susceptibility to clinically significant MS during non

Size and spatial orientation of uterine tissue transplants on the peritoneum crucially determine the growth and cyst formation of endometriosis-like lesions in mice.

BACKGROUND: In many studies in rodents, intraperitoneal endometriosis-like lesions are surgically induced by syngeneic or autologous transplantation of uterine tissue samples, which are sutured to the abdominal wall. However, until now the surgical techniques have not been standardized, and we address this issue here. METHODS: Uterine tissue samples were transplanted to the peritoneum of C57BL/6 mice (four study groups, n = 7 each). Using non-invasive high-resolution ultrasound imaging over a period of 4 weeks, we analyzed growth characteristics and cyst formation of the endometriosis-like le

Exogenous phasic alerting and spatial orienting in mild cognitive impairment compared to healthy ageing: Study outcome is related to target response.

Whether or not attentional mechanisms such as phasic alerting, spatial cueing and inhibition of return (IOR) remain intact in adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) remains a matter of debate. This is possibly the result of inter-study outcome variation caused by the adoption of different methodological components by different research groups. Here we investigated the influence of methodological factors upon study outcome, using a Posner-type exogenous cueing paradigm with amnestic MCI patients and healthy older controls. Specifically, we compared results when

Relationship between aberrant brain connectivity and clinical features in Angelman Syndrome: a new method using tract based spatial statistics of DTI color-coded orientation maps.

AIM: In order to relate brain structural abnormalities to clinical features of Angelman Syndrome (AS), we determined the locations of abnormal regional white matter architecture in AS children using a sensitive and objective whole brain approach to analyze diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) color-coded orientation maps. METHODS: Using tract based spatial statistics (TBSS) of DTI color-coded orientation maps, the fraction of fibers oriented in the anteroposterior (AP), mediolateral (ML) and superioinferior (SI) directions were determined in whole brain white matter of 7 children with AS (mean age:

Neural Mechanisms of the Impact of Rotated Terrain Symbols on Spatial Representation in Orienteers: Evidence from Eye-Tracking and Whole-Brain fNIRS Synchronization.

Spatial representation is a core element of spatial cognition in orienteering, but the visual-spatial neural modulation mechanisms underlying spatial representations with differently oriented maps have not yet been systematically elucidated. This study recruited 67 orienteering athletes as participants and employed a single-factor (map orientation: normal vs. rotated) between-subjects experimental design. Eye-tracking and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) techniques were used simultaneously to collect behavioral, eye movement, and brain activity data, investigating the effects of m
