Donor site necrosis is a very rare complication of palatal rotational flaps. The aim of this case report is to present a 43-year-old female, Type I diabetic patient with a chronic oroantral fistula in the right second molar region. The patient had bony necrosis in the donor site following palatal rotational flap operation. The treatment approach and the alternative methods are discussed.

This article reviews the optimal management of oroantral fistulas, implants protruding into the maxillary sinus, implants completely displaced into the sinus(es), and infected bone grafts used for sinus augmentation. For each scenario, multidisciplinary management strategies will be considered based on whether there is concurrent infectious odontogenic sinusitis. A multidisciplinary approach with oral surgeons and otolaryngologists is often mandatory to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes.

This report highlights the utility of MatriStem Surgical Matrix Thick UBM™ (rebranded as Gentrix® ACell, Inc), a decellularised urinary bladder extracellular matrix in the reconstruction of a post-oncological maxillectomy defect. In utilising this biological construct to serve as a biological dressing, our patient underwent complete mucosalisation of his surgical site without the development of an oroantral fistula and with adequate maxillary vestibule to allow for definitive oral rehabilitation with a removable partial denture.

BACKGROUND: Oroantral communication (OAC) can be defined as a pathologic space created between the maxillary sinus and the oral cavity. This communication and subsequent formation of a chronic oroantral fistula is a common complication often encountered by oral and maxillofacial surgeons.Although various techniques have been proposed in published studies, long-term successful closure of oroantral fistulas is still one of the most difficult problems confronting the surgeon working in the oral and maxillofacial region. The decision of which treatment modality to use is influenced by many factors,

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of dental implants, and many complications may arise during implantation. In cases where an artificial tooth is implanted in the maxilla, complications such as acute maxillary sinusitis, oroantral fistula, and displacement of the dental implant to the maxillary sinus may occur due to the anatomical characteristics of the maxilla and the inexperience of providers. The authors report a case of massive maxillary sinus bleeding during dental implant that was controlled successfully by emergency surgery.

PURPOSE: Is to Sytematically review the available evidence on the effectiveness of tongue flaps in the Closure of Palatal Fisutlas.
METHODS: The study protocol was developed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols, and it was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews under registration number CRD42023397034.
RESULTS: Our search strategy yielded 587 articles. Of these, 150 were duplicate studies, and 437 were screened. Of these studies, 392 studies were excluded based on their titles and abstracts.

Oro-antral communications/fistulae (OAC/OAF) can cause significant patient morbidity, with treatment for defects greater than 5mm in size requiring surgical reconstruction. This technical note evaluates the effectiveness, and proposes the use of, the temporal extension of the buccal fat pad (TEBFP) for the closure of large OAC. The TEBFP can be an effective means of large OAC closure due to its ease of harvesting, with minimal damage to surrounding structures or aesthetic changes. The use of the TEBFP provides stability, versatility, and tension-free closure, with minimal postoperative complic

Eleven case reports involving herpes zoster infection associated with alveolar bone necrosis and tooth loss were reviewed in order to develop a patient profile for this rare combination of physical findings. The clinical course of a 56-year-old white woman with herpes zoster infection of the fifth cranial nerve and related alveolar bone necrosis, tooth loss, and oroantral fistula development is reported. The etiology and management of herpes zoster infection associated with destructive oral sequelae are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonates inhibit osteoclasts, prevent bone resorption and decrease bone turnover. This study examined radiography finding in bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of jaws.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective series of 12 clinically diagnosed patients between 7 to 21 year old (average 13 years). They required emergency dental conditions requiring management by dentist: non healing extraction sockets and pain of bone exposure. The panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography was performed to assess the problem. Thickening of the lamina dura was obse

The article presents a case of chronic odontogenic maxillary sinusitis and the results of its surgical treatment. The cause of the sinusitis, confirmed by the results of X-ray and pathohistological studies, was an inflammatory process affecting the bone tissue around the implant, installed in the place of the upper first molar which was accompanied by the development of an oroantral fistula. During the surgical intervention, the communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus was eliminated, and the implant with the abutment, which was entirely in its cavity, was also removed.

The palatal island flap is reliable for single-staged reconstruction of select oral defects. However, fistula formation is a disruptive potential complication. The authors employed this technique in five patients and present a representative case of a 65-year-old female with a left-sided palatal salivary neoplasm. The patient underwent resection and was reconstructed utilizing a combination of the buccal fat pad and palatal island flap. Four of the five patients healed uneventfully. One patient experienced partial loss of the marginal zone of the palatal island flap which successfully granulat

OBJECTIVE: To provide experience in using the buccal musculomucosal reversed flow arterial island flap in oral, nasal and orbital mucosal defects repair.
METHODS: Six patients were operated by using the method. This flap supplied by the distal portion of the facial artery through the anterior buccal branches can be passed through the tunnel of the subcutaneous plane to repair the orbital mucosal defect or the nasal mucosal defect or septal perforation, or through the alveolar ridge cleft to close alveolar ridge cleft and oroantral fistula, or the cleft of the anterior hard palate or palatal f

The diagnosis of foreign bodies (such as radiolucent bristles) in the maxillary sinus, particularly in a child, is difficult. We report an unusual case of a 9-year-old boy who presented with 42 bristles in his left maxillary sinus. The presence of these foreign bodies was noted only during operation for removal of nasal polyps. All the foreign bodies were removed at the same operation. The route of entry of the foreign bodies was found to be a rare self-inflicted oroantral fistula in the interdental region of the upper premolar and molar teeth.

A case of extensive osteoradionecrosis of the posterior maxillae, pterygoid plates and floor of the sphenoid sinuses is reported. The patient received more than one full course of radical radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Although there was complete remission of the tumour, she suffered from repeated episodes of gum bleeding which was found to be due to oroantral fistulas and severe dental decay. The large fraction dose and total dose, severe dental caries and xerostomia are the most likely contributory causes to this unusual complication in our patient.

A significant proportion of patients with Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) develop oroantral fistulas. Due to the unclear efficacy of crushed delayed-release posaconazole tablets (DRPT) via nasogastric tube in this group of patients, clinicians often use inferior alternatives like posaconazole suspension. In this prospective study, we report good plasma concentrations (median, 2,639 ng/mL; interquartile range [IQR], 1,690 to 3,575 ng/mL; and range, 1,004 to 4,835ng/mL) and complete cure and survival at 3 and 6 months in 19 such patients.
