PURPOSE: Oro-facial manifestations of acromegaly are among the earliest signs of the disease and are reported by a significant number of patients at diagnosis. Despite this high prevalence of acromegaly oral manifestation, dentists do not play a pivotal role in acromegaly identification and diagnosis. The aim of our study was to evaluate the ability of dentists and orthodontists in the early recognition of the oro-facial manifestations of acromegaly.
METHODS: A telematic questionnaire was administered to dentists and orthodontists. The questionnaire included photos with facial and oral-dental

Nonsyndromic complete cleft lip and palate deformity is primarily functional, then esthetic, and finally but not least importantly, a dental challenge. Feeding and facial appearance are important during the first years of a newborn. Nutrition is universally provided by passive feeding plates. If the Cleft Team prefers to use active plates, alveolar molding combined with nasal approaches in infants is the best method to improve esthetics to date. Orthodontists are predominantly responsible for achieving both the goals. After those difficulties have been met in early days of the life, dentists a

The aim of this study was to analyse the variation in the views of Finnish orthodontists on the indications for orthodontic treatment, timing of orthodontic assessment, and treatment methods used. The views were elicited by a questionnaire that was sent to all 146 specialist orthodontists under 65 years of age living in Finland in 2001. The response rate was 57 per cent. The association between an orthodontist's experience and timing of treatment was tested by Fisher's exact test. Stepwise logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between the demographic characteristics

Occupational health risks are present in every profession. This article reviews 4 commonly mentioned conditions that might be health risks in orthodontics and dentistry--musculoskeletal problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, dermatoses and allergies, and psychosocial problems--and compares the reported prevalence rates with data from the American Association of Orthodontists Long-Term Disability Insurance Plan. There is an estimated 3.56% prevalence of long-term disability among orthodontists. The expected and actual specific conditions affecting orthodontists could differ from those of the general

OBJECTIVES: Radiographs are routinely acquired for orthodontic evaluation, and incidental findings (IFs) may be detected early as part of this routine care. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of IFs on panoramic radiographs taken for orthodontic assessment and evaluate the ability of orthodontists to detect, interpret and recommend management for IFs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 1756 patients aged 7-21 with a panoramic image taken for orthodontic evaluation was performed. IFs were categorised by anatomic region and assigned a significance level based on a custom-

INTRODUCTION: Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) refer to alterations in orofacial functions that may hinder craniofacial development. Early screening by dentists and orthodontists, together with timely referral for a speech-language evaluation and possible orofacial myofunctional therapy, is essential to optimize patient care. This study aims to assess the knowledge, practices, and training needs of French dentists and orthodontists regarding OMDs and the role of speech therapy in their management.

This study assesses soft tissue compensations on the left and right sides of the face in individuals with apparent facial asymmetry and compares perception differences between the general population and orthodontists. This prospective study was conducted on 20 patients (aged 18-30 years) with apparent facial asymmetry. Skeletal asymmetry was evaluated using posteroanterior cephalograms, measuring deviations of the zygomatic suture, zygomatic arch, nasal cavity, antegonion (Ag), and menton (Me) from the midsagittal reference line. Corresponding soft tissue deviations were clinically measured. P

INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to determine the perception of smile esthetics among orthodontists and laypeople with respect to asymmetries in the maxillary canines' gingival margins in full-face and close-up smile analyses.
METHODS: Full-face and close-up photographs of the frontal smiles of 4 subjects (2 women, 2 men) were used. The images were digitally altered to create a symmetrical image with the gingival margin levels of the maxillary canines matching the central incisors. From this new image, 5 stages of alterations were made in the gingival margin of the right canine in 0.5-mm incre

The treatment of patients with hemifacial microsomia (HM) always requires an interdisciplinary approach including at least maxillofacial surgery and orthodontics. Co-operation not only within the team, but also with the patients and their family is essential in order to achieve the best results. In the case history of the 10-(1/2) year old female patient reported here, three surgical interventions (two with costo-chondral bone grafts) and a 3-year orthodontic treatment have taken place. A harmonious facial and occlusal result was finally reached.
