Orthohantavirus infection is a rodent-to-human zoonotic disease with a worldwide distribution, resulting in more than 200,000 cases per year. Human infection leads to two diseases, haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome, with mortality rates ranging from 1% to 38%. Apart from the data on cases presenting obvious clinical symptoms, the true prevalence is poorly understood, especially in the occupational groups considered to be at risk of exposure. As there is currently no approved therapy or vaccine, surveillance is essential to locate the presumed site o

Hantaviruses are zoonotic pathogens that are spread by rodents and can cause severe and fatal disease in humans. "New World" hantaviruses (endemic to North and South America) include the human pathogenic Andes orthohantavirus (ANDV), Choclo orthohantavirus (CHOV), and Sin Nombre orthohantavirus (SNV). Human infections can lead to hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), which is associated with ∼40% mortality. Currently, there are no FDA-approved hantavirus vaccines or treatments, but neutralizing antibodies targeting the glycoproteins Gn and Gc have been shown to be protective in animals.

Background: Old World orthohantaviruses are the aetiological agent of Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) disease. Worldwide, the two most prominent pathogens of HFRS are Seoul orthohantavirus (SEOV) and Hantaan orthohantavirus (HTNV). There is currently no specific treatment nor widely licensed vaccine form hantaviruses. Methods: This study developed a virus-vectored vaccine approach using modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) incorporating a SEOV-HTNV chimeric nucleoprotein antigen. Results: The vaccine demonstrated the induction of humoral and cellular immunity. In the absence of a disea

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Orthohantaviruses are negative-sense RNA viruses that persistently infect rodents and can cause severe human disease. Orthohantavirus diversity complicates comprehensive surveillance strategies and diagnostic tools. Currently, serological assays and nested PCR with degenerate primers are used for hantavirus diagnosis and rodent surveillance, but these assays have long turnaround-times. Here, a broadly reactive Orthohantavirus real-time PCR assay is presented that can be incorporated into public health and research laboratories across the Americas.

UNLABELLED: Rodent-borne viruses, including orthohantaviruses, mammarenaviruses, and rat hepatitis virus (HEV-C), pose significant health threats to humans, causing severe diseases such as hemorrhagic fevers, respiratory illness, and hepatitis. In Cambodia, data on these viruses remain limited, and their burdens on human health are unknown. This study investigated the presence of these viruses in rodents and assessed potential human exposure across diverse environmental and socio-economic contexts in Cambodia. The study was conducted in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas of Cambodia during the

Few cases of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome have been reported in northeastern Argentina. However, neighboring areas show a higher incidence, suggesting underreporting. We evaluated the presence of antibodies against orthohantavirus in small rodents throughout Misiones province. Infected Akodon affinis montensis and Oligoryzomys nigripes native rodents were found in protected areas of Misiones.

We demonstrate that 6 distinct Peromyscus rodent species are permissive to experimental infection with Sin Nombre orthohantavirus (SNV). Viral RNA and SNV antibodies were detected in members of all 6 species. P. leucopus mice demonstrated markedly higher viral and antibody titers than P. maniculatus mice, the established primary hosts for SNV.

Seoul virus (SEOV) is a worldwide ratborne orthohantavirus. We describe an SEOV infection in an adult returning to France from Kenya, followed by Guillain-Barré syndrome. We confirmed SEOV infection by PCR and sequencing. Although transmission might have occurred in Kenya, the epidemiologic information available is not sufficient to confirm that possibility.

Identifying reservoir host species is crucial for understanding the ecology of multi-host pathogens and predicting risks of pathogen spillover from wildlife to people. Predictive models are increasingly used for identifying ecological traits and prioritizing surveillance of likely zoonotic reservoirs, but these often employ different types of evidence for establishing host associations. Comparisons between models with different infection evidence are necessary to guide inferences about the trait profiles of likely hosts and identify which hosts and geographical regions are likely sources of sp

Rodents and shrews are major reservoirs of various pathogens that are related to zoonotic infectious diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate co-infections of zoonotic pathogens in rodents and shrews trapped in four provinces of China. We sampled different rodent and shrew communities within and around human settlements in four provinces of China and characterised several important zoonotic viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens by PCR methods and phylogenetic analysis. A total of 864 rodents and shrews belonging to 24 and 13 species from RODENTIA and EULIPOTYPHLA orders were

Several viral infections are associated with acute and long-term complications. During the past two years, there have been many reports on post-infectious symptoms of the patients suffering from COVID-19 disease. Serious complications occasionally occur during the acute phase of Puumala orthohantavirus caused nephropathia epidemica. Severe long-term consequences are rare. Fatigue for several weeks is quite common. Hormonal insufficiencies should be excluded if the patient does not recover normally.

Andes virus (ANDV) is the sole orthohantavirus with documented human-to-human transmission. We summarize the epidemiology and clinical features of ANDV infection and review best practices in clinical management, as based on published expert consensus guidelines, field experience, and clinical trials. We also evaluate currently available and investigational treatments (including the use of antiviral agents), assess emerging monoclonal antibody therapies, and outline prospects for vaccine development. Finally, we discuss important infection prevention and control measures.

In Europe, two species of hantaviruses, Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) and Dobrava orthohantavirus (DOBV), cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in humans. The rodent reservoirs for these viruses are common throughout Ukraine, and hence, the goal of this study was to identify the species and strains of hantaviruses circulating in this region. We conducted surveillance of small rodent populations in a rural region in northwestern Ukraine approximately 30 km from Poland. From the 424 small mammals captured, we identified nine species, of which the most abundant were Myodes glareolus, the b

OBJECTIVES: High incidences of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) have been reported in the southern Republic of Korea (ROK). A distinct southern genotype of Orthohantavirus hantanense (HTNV) was identified in Apodemus agrarius chejuensis on Jeju Island. However, its association with HFRS cases in southern ROK remains elusive. We investigated the potential of the southern HTNV genotype as an etiological agent of HFRS.
METHODS: Samples from 22 patients with HFRS and 193 small mammals were collected in the southern ROK. The clinical characteristics of patients infected with the south

Sin Nombre orthohantavirus (SNV), a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus that is carried and transmitted by the North American deer mouse Peromyscus maniculatus, can cause infection in humans through inhalation of aerosolized excreta from infected rodents. This infection can lead to hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), which has an ∼36% case-fatality rate. We used reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) to confirm SNV infection in a patient and identified SNV in lung tissues in wild-caught rodents from potential sites of exposure. Using viral whole-genome sequencing (WGS),

Hantaviruses are a diverse and widespread group of zoonotic viruses under the Orthohantavirus genus that can cause severe acute cardiopulmonary or renal disease. Hantavirus species are grouped generally as either New World or Old World based on geographic distribution, which is influenced by their respective host reservoir including rodents. Although there is no specific treatment for hantaviruses, recognizing clinical presentation and interpreting laboratory results for case identification can improve patient management. Here we review the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic

The Orthohantavirus genus in the family Hantaviridae includes viruses that cause zoonotic diseases in humans known as hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Exposure of humans to these viruses occurs through inhalation of aerosols of urine, feces, and saliva of rodents, who are the reservoirs for pathogenic orthohantaviruses. The clinical courses of HFRS and HPS are characterized by initial high fever and body pain with severe HFRS or HPS leading to renal failure, pulmonary failure, or both. The underlying pathogenic mechanism of both diseases inc

As at 18 June 2026, 13 cases (12 confirmed and one probable) of Andes orthohantavirus have been reported (case-fatality: 23%), linked to the Dutch-flagged expedition cruise ship MV Hondius. The event involved individuals from 23 nationalities and required medical evacuation, repatriation, coordinated international contact tracing, isolation, quarantine and clinical and laboratory testing follow-up. To date, all cases have been passengers (10/121; 8%) or crew members (3/61; 5%). Ongoing monitoring and investigations aim to clarify the source of the outbreak, identify risk factors and prevent fu

In recent years, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) incidence has been becoming a severe public health problem again due to its significant increase in Shaanxi Province, China. Baoji, located in the Guanzhong Plain in the central part of Shaanxi Province, has been severely affected by HFRS since its first emergence in 1955. To better understand the epidemiology of orthohantaviruses infection in humans and the causative agents carried by the rodents, the long-term incidence patterns were analyzed and a molecular epidemiological investigation of orthohantaviruses infection in humans an
