Intra-breath oscillometry for the evaluation of lung function in children and adolescents with a history of preterm birth.

OBJECTIVE: To assess respiratory system impedance (Zrs) and spirometric parameters in children and adolescents with and without a history of preterm birth. METHODS: We evaluated a sample of 51 subjects between 11 and 14 years of age: 35 who had a history of preterm birth (preterm group) and 16 who had been born at term (full-term group). Lung function was measured by spirometry, spectral oscillometry, and intra-breath oscillometry. RESULTS: Neither spirometry nor spectral oscillometry revealed any statistically significant differences between the preterm and full-term groups. However, intra-

Increased prevalence of small airways dysfunction in patients with systemic sclerosis as determined by impulse oscillometry.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence and clinical implications of small airways involvement in SSc are still to be fully elucidated. The goal of the present work is to assess the prevalence of small airways dysfunction by impulse oscillometry and to determine whether it correlates with selected disease-related features and respiratory-related quality of life. METHODS: Ninety-four SSc patients and 93 healthy controls were studied by impulse oscillometry measurements. Small airways dysfunction was defined as the difference between resistance at low frequency, i.e. 5 Hz, and resistance at high frequency,

Early detection of changes in lung mechanics with oscillometry following bariatric surgery in severe obesity.

Obesity is associated with respiratory symptoms that are reported to improve with weight loss, but this is poorly reflected in spirometry, and few studies have measured respiratory mechanics with oscillometry. We investigated whether early changes in lung mechanics following weight loss are detectable with oscillometry. Furthermore, we investigated whether the changes in lung mechanics measured in the supine position following weight loss are associated with changes in sleep quality. Nineteen severely obese female subjects (mean body mass index, 47.2 ± 6.6 kg/m(2)) were evaluated using spirome

No effect of chinese acupuncture on isocapnic hyperventilation with cold air in asthmatics, measured with impulse oscillometry.

The cost to society and the individual of treating asthma has been increasing in developed countries. This has given rise to studies of the efficacy of complementary treatments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of traditional Chinese Acupuncture in patients with mild asthma. The method used for evaluation of efficacy was total airway resistance at 5Hz (R5) as measured by impulse oscillometry (IOS)--a forced oscillation technique, at baseline and after a bronchial challenge with voluntary isocapnic hyperventilation of cold air (IHCA). The study was a parallel group randomised

Intra-Breath Oscillometry Reveals Phase-Dependent Resistive Abnormalities in Respiratory Mechanics After Severe Covid-19.

Post-COVID syndrome is often associated with persistent respiratory symptoms despite largely unremarkable conventional pulmonary function tests, suggesting the presence of subtle alterations in respiratory mechanics. We hypothesized that phase-resolved analysis of respiratory impedance would reveal dynamic abnormalities not captured by standard endpoint-based measures. In this prospective observational study, survivors of severe COVID-19 requiring veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) (n = 9) were evaluated two years after recovery and compared with matched healthy control

Standard pulmonary function tests and respiratory oscillometry patterns in hypersensitivity pneumonitis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an interstitial lung disease (ILD) caused by repeated exposure to inhaled antigens, leading to small airway and parenchymal inflammation. Diagnosis is based on a detailed clinical history, chest imaging and invasive tests such as bronchoalveolar lavage. Distinguishing HP from other ILDs is challenging. Respiratory oscillometry, a novel pulmonary function test (PFT), is highly sensitive to small airway abnormalities. Oscillometry measurement of reactance is strongly correlated with gender-age-physiology score, a prognostic tool used to predict mo

Therapeutic effect of long-acting muscarinic antagonist for treating uncontrolled asthma assessed using impulse oscillometry.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the incorporation of LAMAs into asthma therapy has been expected to enhance symptom control. However, a significant number of patients with asthma continue to experience poorly managed symptoms. There have been limited investigations on LAMA-induced airway alterations in asthma treatment employing IOS. In this study, we administered a LAMA to patients with poorly controlled asthma, evaluated clinical responses and respiratory function, and investigated airway changes facilitated by LAMA treatments using the IOS. METHODS: Of a total of 1282 consecutive patients wit

Impulse oscillometry reveals subclinical exercise-induced bronchoconstriction undetected by spirometry in healthy young adult males.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: - Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is the acute constriction of the airways during or after physical exertion. This transient obstruction results in symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and dyspnea, which can affect exercise performance and overall quality of life. EIB affects a substantial proportion of individuals having asthma; however, it also affects non-asthmatics; nearly 5% to 20% of the general population is affected. Spirometry has been used to assess EIB; however, it has several limitations, including dependence on forced expiratory measurements t

Reference equations using segmented regressions for impulse oscillometry in healthy subjects aged 2.7-90 years.

BACKGROUND: Published reference equations for impulse oscillometry (IOS) usually encompass a specific age group but not the entire lifespan. This may lead to discordant predicted values when two or more non-coincident equations can be applied to the same person, or when a person moves from one equation to the next non-convergent equation as he or she gets older. Thus, our aim was to provide a single reference equation for each IOS variable that could be applied from infancy to old age. METHODS: This was an ambispective cross-sectional study in healthy nonsmokers, most of whom lived in Mexico

Virus-Induced Asthma/Wheeze in Preschool Children: Longitudinal Assessment of Airflow Limitation Using Impulse Oscillometry.

: Several researchers have assessed the utility of Impulse Oscillometry System (IOS) in diagnosing and evaluating the severity of respiratory diseases in childhood, but none has investigated the impact of the fluctuations of IOS parameters in an individualized manner. In this two-year prospective study, we aimed to longitudinally evaluate changes in airflow limitation and bronchodilator responsiveness in steroid-naïve four- to six-year-old children during a virus-induced wheezing episode, with IOS pulmonary resistance parameters set at 5 (R5) and 20 (R20) Hz. Moreover, feasibility and reproduc

Intra-breath respiratory oscillometry in the first days of life in preterm infants: a prospective observational study.

UNLABELLED: We aimed to describe intra-breath changes in respiratory system resistance (Rrs) and reactance (Xrs) in preterm infants receiving non-invasive respiratory support during the first days of life. This prospective observational study included infants born at < 32 weeks' gestation. Respiratory oscillometry was performed at 24-48 h of life using a ventilator that superimposed sinusoidal oscillations (10 Hz) on a continuous positive airway pressure of 5 cmH2O. We calculated the average Rrs and Xrs over inspiration (Rinsp and Xinsp) and expiration (Rexp and Xexp), end-inspiratory and end-

Application of impulse oscillometry to detect interstitial lung disease and airway disease in adults with rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: We conducted a retrospective observational study to explore the potential application of impulse oscillometry (IOS) as an alternative to high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) for detecting pulmonary involvement in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) because clinically evident interstitial lung disease (ILD) and airway involvement are common in this population. METHODS: We enrolled 72 patients with RA who underwent pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and IOS between September 2021 and September 2022. We aimed to identify the PFT and IOS variables associated with lung diseases
