Evaluation of selected-ion flow-tube mass spectrometry for the measurement of ethanol, methanol and isopropanol in physiological fluids: effect of osmolality and sample volume.

Selected-ion flow-tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) is particularly suited for the analysis of volatile low molecular weight compounds. We have evaluated this technique for the assay of different alcohols in aqueous solutions, including blood plasma, and in particular whether the osmolality or sample volume affected vapourisation. Solutions of three different alcohols (methanol, ethanol and isopropanol) ranging from 0.005 to 50 mmol/L were prepared in deionised water (0 milliosmol), phosphate-buffered saline (690 mOsm), isotonic saline (294 mOsm) and plasma (296 mOsm). The vapour above the samp

[Hemodynamic effects of contrast substances as dependent on their viscosity and osmolality].

This paper analyzes the current information on the role of viscosity and osmolality of the solutions of iodine-containing contrast substances used in angiology, in microcirculatory disorders due to angiography. Provides the data that confirm blood flow deceleration and the development of hypoxia during the use of more viscous dimeric substances. It is concluded that the change in microcirculation is an important indicator of the safety of modern iodine-containing contrast-diagnostic agents, among which the monomeric non-ionic substances possess an optimal combination of the high contrast and l

Sodium.

Disorders of serum sodium are both the most common and probably most the poorly understood electrolyte disorders in clinical medicine. In the past few years increased knowledge about the non-osmotic release of vasopressin and the cloning of vasopressin receptors and of vasopressin-regulated water channels (AQP2) has enhanced our understanding of these disorders. Also controversies surrounding the treatment of hyponatraemic patients have led to well-accepted therapeutic guidelines.

Serum osmolality in Menière's disease.

Serum osmolality in patients with Meniere's disease was measured by a Wescore 5100B osmometer to reveal the relationship between a vertiginous attack, the effect of isosorbide, the effect of glycerol, and the osmolality. The following results were obtained: First, the osmotic pressure of the control group ranged from 275 mOsm/kg to 285 mOsm/kg, and that of the Meniere's group ranged from 270 mOsm/kg to 290 mOsm/kg. Both groups showed normal distribution, and mean values of both were 284 mOsm/kg. There was no statistically significant difference between them with regard to serum osmolality. Sec

Food-induced heartburn: effect of osmolality.

It is a common clinical observation that certain foods cause heartburn, some by an effect on the lower esophageal sphincter and others by a direct "irritant" effect on the esophagus. This study investigated the effect of solution osmolality in the production of esophageal pain. Subjects were divided into an "acid-positive" and "'acid-negative" group using a conventional Bernstein test. Six (54%) and 9 (82%) of 11 acid-positive subjects developed pain with hypertonic saline and sucrose (630 mOsm/kg water). One of 15 acid-negative subjects developed pain (p less than 0.01). This study suggests t

Mannitol dose requirements in brain-injured patients.

There is little information as to the optimal use of mannitol. To determine the dose-response relationship, the osmotic gradient required, and the time course of intracranial pressure (ICP) reduction produced by mannitol, eight patients with acute head injury were studied in whom ICP was monitored with a ventriculostomy and found to be elevated. Ventilation was controlled to a pCO2 of 25 +/- 3 mm Hg and all were paralyzed with Pavulon. None had received barbiturates. Before mannitol administration the intracranial volume-pressure response was determined. Mannitol was administered as a bolus of

Osmolarity-Induced Altered Intracellular Molecular Crowding Drives Osteoarthritis Pathology.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a multifactorial degenerative joint disease of which the underlying mechanisms are yet to be fully understood. At the molecular level, multiple factors including altered signaling pathways, epigenetics, metabolic imbalance, extracellular matrix degradation, production of matrix metalloproteinases, and inflammatory cytokines, are known to play a detrimental role in OA. However, these factors do not initiate OA, but are mediators or consequences of the disease, while many other factors causing the etiology of OA are still unknown. Here, it is revealed that microenvironment

Features and influences on the normal tear evaporation rate.

Tear evaporation is a normal physiological phenomenon that has an important role in regulating blink activity and tear production. An altered tear evaporation rate (TER) is a defining characteristic of evaporative dry eye disease (DED), and the measurement of tear evaporation is a useful clinical test for diagnosis. Reported values for a normal TER cover a broad range, which may be due to the influence of ocular, environmental, and systemic factors. For improved disease diagnosis, a fuller understanding of the normal TER range is essential. This paper reports on a literature review of the curr

Concurrent agglomeration and straining govern the transport of 14C-labeled few-layer graphene in saturated porous media.

Deposition of graphene on environmental surfaces will dictate its transport and risks. In this work, the deposition, mobilization, and transport of 14C-labeled few-layer graphene (FLG) in saturated quartz sand were systematically examined. Increasing solution ionic strength (IS) (1-100 mmol/L NaCl) resulted in greater retention of FLG (33-89%) in the sand and more hyper-exponential distribution of FLG along the sand column. Only a small fraction (≤7.4%) of the retained FLG was remobilized due to perturbation of IS by deionized water. These results indicate that trapping in pore spaces (i.e., p

The utility of the transtubular potassium gradient in the evaluation of hyperkalemia.

The transtubular potassium gradient (TTKG) is used to gauge renal potassium secretion by the cortical collecting duct, indirectly assessing mineralocorticoid bioactivity in patients who have hypo- or hyperkalemia. TTKG values <6 indicate an inappropriate renal response to hyperkalemia, whereas values >2 during hypokalemia point to renal loss. Hypokalemia is not addressed here. Studies supporting the usefulness of the TTKG in hyperkalemia are limited to case series. This calculation may be most useful in distinguishing hyperkalemic patients who have mineralocorticoid deficiency versus resistanc

[Plasma osmolarity and cerebral volume].

Under normal physiological conditions, the osmolarity of extracellular fluids (ECFs) and natremia are controlled by two regulatory mechanisms modulating the water balance and sodium outflow from information collected by the osmoreceptors and baroreceptors, respectively. As well, under normal physiological conditions, water and electrolytes of brain ECFs are secreted by the endothelial cells of brain capillaries. Furthermore, isotonicity is present on both sides of the blood-brain barrier. In the event of systemic osmolarity disorders, water transport subject to osmosis laws occurs at the level

[Endocrine theory of idiopathic nocturnal enuresis].

Body fluid homeostasis is maintained by the kidney. Such an accurate control in achieved via the secretion of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), the secretion of which is regulated by hypothalamic osmoreceptors. Both urine flow rate and the excretion of most electrolytes have a diurnal rhythm; they increase during daytime and decrease during nighttime. Such a rhythm seems to be absent in some subjects who suffer from bedwetting because of relative polyuria. In these cases, the polyuria is associated with a decreased nocturnal secretion of ADH and the subsequent excretion of dilated urine. A deficit i

Pharmacological treatment of Menière's disease. A review of common remedies with special emphasis on vasodilators, including hyperosmolar substances and hearing.

A review is given of common pharmacological therapies for Menière's disease. The use of vasodilators and hyperosmotic agents is discussed on the bases of clinical and experimental investigations. Osmotic reduction of intralabyrinthine water seems to play a major role in the induced hearing gain but positive effects on the inner ear blood flow cannot be excluded.

Cell poking. Determination of the elastic area compressibility modulus of the erythrocyte membrane.

Cell poking, a new method for measuring mechanical properties of single cells was used to determine the elastic area compressibility modulus of osmotically swollen human erythrocytes. With this method we determined the force required to indent cells attached to a glass coverslip (Petersen, N.O., W. B. McConnaughey , and E. L. Elson , 1982, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 79:5327. Forces on the order of one millidyne and indentations on the order of one micron were detected. An analysis of these data in terms of a simplified mechanical model yielded the elastic area compressibility modulus. This an

Plasmatic osmolality in Menière's disease.

Research has been carried out on 55 subjects suffering from Menière's disease; 15 patients showed plasmatic hyperosmolality (300 mOsm./1. or more) and 6 of them were in a vertiginous attack. Statistical calculations have shown significant differences between the numbers of patients with hyperosmolality during a crisis and after one.
