Outcomes of image-based sexual abuse among young people: a systematic review.

Image-Based Sexual Abuse (IBSA) is an increasingly recognized issue, especially among young people, yet empirical research on its consequences remains relatively scarce. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search identified peer-reviewed studies published between 2010 and 2024, and eligible studies were screened and quality-assessed using standardized criteria. This systematic review synthesizes findings from 12 empirical studies to provide a comprehensive overview of the psychological, social, educational and occupational consequences of IBSA victimization among individuals aged 10-24.

The lived experience of depression among culturally Deaf adults.

Culturally Deaf adults lost hearing at early ages, communicate primarily in American Sign Language (ASL), and self-identify as culturally Deaf. Communication barriers lead to isolation, low self-esteem, abuse, and inadequate health care. Screening Deaf patients for depressive symptoms poses challenge. Nurses are rarely familiar with ASL, and depression screening tools aren't easily translated from English to ASL. Consequently, Deaf adults are not adequately screened for depression. Qualitative interviews were conducted with culturally Deaf adults, and certified interpreters helped to enhance u

Navigating the dual burden of type 1 diabetes and mental illness: A phenomenological study.

OBJECTIVE: Despite high burdens of mental illness among people with type 1 diabetes (T1D), little is known about how affected individuals experience this dual disease burden. This qualitative study aimed to address this gap. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Five online focus groups were conducted with 21 adults with T1D and a history of mental illness. We analysed data using a six-step descriptive phenomenological approach: (1) collecting data, (2) gaining an overall sense of participants' perspectives, (3) segmenting narratives into units of meaning, (4) synthesizing units into themes, (5) deter

An extraverted behavior intervention improves immune gene expression.

BACKGROUND: Social connection is critical to both psychological well-being and optimal immune function. The present study tested whether a behavioral intervention to increase social connection (promoting extraverted behavior) might reduce a threat-related immunoregulatory gene expression program known as the Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity (CTRA). The CTRA is characterized by elevated inflammatory gene expression and reduced innate antiviral gene expression in response to beta adrenergic signaling and has been associated with adverse social conditions such as loneliness and ost

The Frequency, Nature, Impact, and Coping Strategies of Nonconsensual Intimate Image Dissemination Victimization: A Scoping Review.

Young adults increasingly initiate, maintain, and end sexual relationships online, an evolution that has also transformed how sexual violence may be perpetrated. Nonconsensual intimate image dissemination (NCIID) has gained attention in research, policy, and media. Yet, to date, there has been no synthesis of the literature on NCIID victimization. The goals of this review were to: (a) describe the frequency and nature of NCIID victimization, (b) examine the impacts of experiencing NCIID, and (c) identify survivor coping strategies. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews

"If I Am Ready": Exploring the relationships between masculinities, pregnancy, and abortion among men in James Town, Ghana.

The ability to exercise full sexual and reproductive health and rights is shaped by the contextual environment, meaning that women and pregnant people must navigate patriarchal norms when seeking care. Despite growing evidence that men are able to influence pregnancy outcomes, there remains a paucity of research on how and why men are able to involve themselves in pregnancy and abortion decision-making. This study interrogates the mechanisms that drive men's involvement in pregnancies and abortions in James Town, Ghana. Data from a survey (n = 296) and in-depth interviews (n = 37) were collect

The psychosocial impact of vitiligo in Indian patients.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo has a special significance in Indian patients both because depigmentation is obvious on darker skin and the enormous stigma associated with the disease in the culture. AIMS: This study was carried out to determine the beliefs about causation, aspects of the disease that cause concern, medical, and psychosocial needs of the patients, expectation from treatment and from the treating physician, and effects of disease on the patient's life. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted in 50 patients with vitiligo. Purposive sampling was used to select subjects for the

The Role of Stigma in the Nursing Care of Families Impacted by Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The current US opioid crisis has resulted in a significant increase in opioid use disorder among pregnant and parenting women. Substance use disorders, in general, are highly stigmatized conditions. Stigma serves as a well-documented global barrier to health-seeking behaviors and engagement in healthcare. While extensive research exists on the stigma of mental illness, few studies have explored the stigma experienced by families impacted by neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). PURPOSE: Therefore, the purpose of this article is to explore the role of stigma in the care of families i

Ludwig Haberlandt--A pioneer in hormonal contraception.

Ludwig Haberlandt (1 February 1885 - 22 July 1932), pioneer in hormonal contraception, was born in Graz, where he graduated from the university in 1909 in medicine summa cum laude and began his career as a physiologist. The idea of temporary hormonal contraception in the female body entered his mind in February 1919, when he was already Professor of Physiology in Innsbruck. He pursued his project ambitiously and by 1921 demonstrated temporary hormonal contraception in a female animal by transplanting ovaries from a second, pregnant, animal. From 1923, after further successful scientific work i

Overdiagnosis and consequent mismanagement of head louse infestations in North America.

BACKGROUND: Lay personnel and many health care workers in the United States believe that head louse infestations caused by Pediculus capitis are exceedingly transmissible and that infested children readily infest others. Schoolchildren therefore frequently become ostracized and remain so until no signs of their presumed infestations are evident. Repeated applications of pediculicidal product and chronic school absenteeism frequently result. METHODS: To determine how frequently louse-related exclusions from schools and applications of pediculicidal therapeutic regimens might be inappropriate,

Social exclusion in educational settings and the risk of alienation in adolescent development: a narrative review from a mind-body interaction perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Social exclusion in educational settings is a salient interpersonal stressor during adolescence. However, ostracism, peer rejection, peer victimization, bullying, loneliness, and social isolation are overlapping but non-equivalent constructs. This narrative review examines how social exclusion in educational settings may contribute to the risk of alienation in adolescent development from a mind-body interaction perspective. METHODS: A structured, non-exhaustive literature search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, and the Web of Science Core Collection for peer-reviewed English-l

The intersection of sickle cell disease, stigma, and pain in Africa.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a significant public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa, where it is the most prevalent genetic disorder, presenting numerous health care and sociocultural challenges. A case study of a young girl from Ghana's Ashanti region illustrates the stigma surrounding SCD, driven by traditional beliefs and misconceptions that perceive SCD as a spiritual affliction. This stigma results in social ostracism and discrimination, impacting affected individuals and their families. Despite the severe and unpredictable pain associated with SCD, effective management is often hamper

Registered Nurses' Experiences With Incivility During the Early Phase of COVID-19 Pandemic: Results of a Multi-State Survey.

BACKGROUND: Incivility among workers in the health sector is recognized as an occupational hazard. The COVID-19 outbreak brought sudden and profound changes to many health care settings, many of which have been identified as antecedents to workplace incivility. The purpose of this retrospective study was to explore the experiences of registered nurses with workplace incivility, cyber-incivility, and incivility outside of work during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This mixed-methods study used convenience sampling. Data were collected from June to September 2020 via an onli

Social Rejection and Alcohol Use in Daily Life.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have found that social rejection is associated with increases in negative affect, distress, and hostility. Fewer studies, however, have examined the impact of social rejection on alcohol use, and no known studies have tested whether the impact of social rejection by close others differs from social rejection by acquaintances in its association with subsequent drinking. METHODS: Participants completed event-contingent reports of their social interactions and alcohol use for 14 consecutive days on smartphones. Multilevel negative binomial regression models tested wheth
