Incidence of occlusion due to impacted cerumen among mentally retarded adolescents.

The incidence of occlusion of the external auditory canal due to impacted cerumen was determined for 44 mentally retarded subjects in comparison with 44 nonretarded subjects. Otoscopic data were taken by qualified personnel for both groups and subjected to statistical analysis. Results confirmed that retarded adolescents have a significantly higher incidence of occlusion of the external auditory canal due to impacted cerumen than do nonretarded adolescents. Routine otoscopic examinations should be performed on the former group to ameliorate loss of hearing due to impacted cerumen.

Classification of Ear Imagery Database using Bayesian Optimization based on CNN-LSTM Architecture.

The external and middle ear conditions are diagnosed using a digital otoscope. The clinical diagnosis of ear conditions is suffered from restricted accuracy due to the increased dependency on otolaryngologist expertise, patient complaint, blurring of the otoscopic images, and complexity of lesions definition. There is a high requirement for improved diagnosis algorithms based on otoscopic image processing. This paper presented an ear diagnosis approach based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) as feature extraction and long short-term memory (LSTM) as a classifier algorithm. However, the s

[Pneumatic otoscopy in pediatrics].

Pneumatic otoscopy is based upon the reaction of the tympanic membrane after sending a small air volume. A normal mobility means that air is present in the middle ear. Instead absent or reduced mobility means that effusion is present. This technique improves the quality of ears clinical examination and is particularly useful for the diagnosis of suppurative and serous otitis media.

Primary secretory otitis media in Cavalier King Charles spaniels.

Primary secretory otitis media (PSOM) is a disease that has been described in the Cavalier King Charles spaniel (CKCS). A large, bulging pars flaccida identified on otoscopic examination confirms the diagnosis. However, in many CKCS with PSOM the pars flaccida is flat, and radiographic imaging is needed to confirm the diagnosis. Current treatment for PSOM includes performing a myringotomy into the caudal-ventral quadrant of the pars tensa with subsequent flushing of the mucus out of the bulla using a video otoscope. Repeat myringotomies and flushing of the middle ear are necessary to keep the

Transillumination of the fingers for vascular anomalies: a novel method for evaluating hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

PURPOSE: We describe a novel approach for detecting vascular abnormalities deep in the digits by means of a handheld illuminator. METHODS: Ten patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia were compared with 10 controls for telangiectases in the fingers using a handheld otoscope. RESULTS: This noninvasive transillumination method revealed telangiectases in 9 of 10 patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia and none in controls. CONCLUSIONS: Transillumination of fingers with an otoscope identifies telangiectases in patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. Further s

Pediatric tympanostomy tube assessment via deep learning.

PURPOSE: Tympanostomy tube (TT) placement is the most frequently performed ambulatory surgery in children under 15. After the procedure it is recommended that patients follow up regularly for "tube checks" until TT extrusion. Such visits incur direct and indirect costs to families in the form of days off from work, copays, and travel expenses. This pilot study aims to compare the efficacy of tympanic membrane (TM) evaluation by an artificial intelligence algorithm with that of clinical staff for determining presence or absence of a tympanostomy tube within the TM. METHODS: Using a digital oto

[Otoacoustic emissions in hearing screening in children].

BACKGROUND/AIM: Prevention of the consequences of hearing loss can be accomplished by early hearing screening of the cochlear function in newborus, but also with continuous hearing screening in the early childhood. The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability and feasibility of otoacoustic emissions (OAE) in hearing screening in children, evaluate the frequency and type of hearing loss and determine etiological factors of these losses. METHODS: In the study, 133 children, aged 2 to 7.5 years, were tested on both ears with transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distorti

The role of high frequency tympanometry in newborn hearing screening programme.

BACKGROUNDS AND OBJECTIVE: The hearing assessment of the newborns ideally should detect both middle and inner ear functions. The aim of this study is to control the association between otoscopic evaluation, multifrequency tympanometry and TEOAE results. METHODS: Fifty new-borns otherwise healthy were tested after the otolaryngological evaluation by 226 and 1000 Hz tympanometries and transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE's). The study was performed in three steps and 17 babies that could not pass from the first step they were tested in the second step with the same tests (226 Hz and 10

External and middle ear effects on infant hearing screening test results.

This study investigated the relationship between external and middle ear factors and hearing screening results by automated auditory brain stem response (ABR) and transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs). The ears of 200 healthy newborns aged 5 to 48 hours underwent screening by ABR and EOAE, followed by otoscopic examination. The pass rates for ABR and EOAE were 91% and 58.5%, respectively. On otoscopic examination, 28% (112/400) ears had occluding vernix obscuring the view of the tympanic membrane. Cleaning of vernix was successfully performed in all but 2 ears that had occluding verni

Acoustic impedance measurement in the otological assessment of multiply handicapped children.

This survey investigated the use of acoustic impedance measurement on a population of multiply handicapped children and correlated the results with otoscopy. Thirty-one children were tested with an impedance meter studying tympanometry, tympanic membrane compliance, and acoustic reflex. Otoscopic examination was also scheduled for each child. The results show that 42% of children tested had some kind of middle-ear problem, mostly unrecognized at the time of this survey. There was 100% agreement between impedance and otoscopic findings. Apparently impedance audiometry can be useful for identify

Effect of middle-ear dysfunction and disease on hearing and language in high-risks infants.

The effect of middle-ear dysfunction and disease on hearing and language development at one year of age was evaluated for 143 high-risk infants. These infants were categorized as normal or abnormal based on otologic history, otoscopic examinations, and on tympanometric examinations. Language was significantly related to gestational age, being delayed by approximately the amount of prematurity. Language scores were therefore adjusted for gestational age. Speech-detection threshold was not related to gestational age, and was used as the measure of hearing. Hearing levels were negatively correlat

Optimized fine-tuned ensemble classifier using Bayesian optimization for the detection of ear diseases.

External and middle ear diseases are common disorders, especially in children, and can be examined using a digital otoscope. Hearing loss can result from delayed diagnosis and treatment which is subjective and error-prone depending on the expertise of the otolaryngologist. For these reasons, deep learning-based automated diagnostic systems are highly needed. In this study, a novel weighted average voting ensemble classifier between MobileNet and DenseNet169 has been developed to diagnose and detect different ear conditions. Bayesian optimization was used to select hyperparameters that gave the

Case Report: Endoscope-Assisted Bilateral Nasal Leech Retrieval in a Dog.

A non-descript male dog was presented with symptoms, such as chronic recurrent epistaxis, sneezing, and episodes of nasal leech infestation from the past 3 months. The dog was subjected to basic clinical examination, hemato-biochemistry test, and radiographic examination before rhinoscopy. Rhinoscopy was performed with Karl Storz's 5-mm video-otoscope under general anesthesia. Leech infestation in the nasal cavity was found to be the cause of the epistaxis under rhinoscopic examination. The endoscopic guided retrieval of the leech from both the nostrils was successfully done with help of grasp

Ear cleaning: the UK and US perspective.

Ear cleaning helps maintain the normal otic environment and is important in the treatment of otitis. Over cleaning, however, may trigger otitis through maceration of the epidermal lining. Simple manual cleaning is useful for routine cleansing but doesn't remove tightly adherent debris. Bulb syringes are more vigorous but may damage the ear in inexperienced hands. Devices using mains water pressure or dental machines are also available. Thorough cleaning of the ear canals and middle ear cavity can only be achieved by retrograde flushing using specially adapted catheters, feeding tubes or video

[Acoustic distortion products. Clinical values and limitations in the study of low frequencies].

Distortion products are otoemissions produced when the cochlea is stimulated by two pure, continuous sounds f1 and f2. The most ample distortion product in Man corresponds to a frequency of 2f1-f2. The aim of our work is to appreciate the possibilities to study the distortion products for the exploration of low frequencies in Man. Three populations of subjects have been studied: young subjects have been studied: young subjects with a normal hearing, subjects with pathological otoscopic findings in spite of a normal hearing, subjects with pathological otoscopic findings in spite of a normal aud

Positive middle ear pressure shown by tympanometry.

The incidence and implications of positive middle ear pressure shown by tympanometry have been sparsely reported in the literature. A series of 13 patients (16 ears) exhibited middle ear pressures that exceeded +49 mm H2O. Clinical, otoscopic, audiologic, and pathologic findings are reviewed. Otalgia or fullness and pharyngitis were the most commonly reported symptoms. Acute middle ear pathologic conditions were otoscopically confirmed in 13 ears. Effusion was present in five of six ears that were selected for myringotomy. The clinical implications of positive middle ear pressure would be part
