Perioperative outcomes of neonatal versus delayed surgery for Hirschsprung disease: a nationwide retrospective cohort study in Japan.

PURPOSE: To assess the safety and short-term outcomes of neonatal surgery for Hirschsprung disease. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study extracted data from a nationwide Japanese inpatient database from July 2010 to March 2021. Patients diagnosed with Hirschsprung disease within 30 days of life who underwent definitive surgery within 120 days of life were identified. Patients who underwent enterostomy before definitive surgery and those who were diagnosed with the extended type of Hirschsprung disease were excluded. We stratified patients who underwent definitive surgery within 30 days of

Management of cataract in dry eye disease: Preferred practice pattern guidelines.

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed ophthalmic surgeries in the world. Dry eye disease (DED) is found to coexist in most patients with cataracts due to the overlapping age groups of both these conditions. Preoperative evaluation for DED is important to improve outcomes. A pre-existing DED affecting the tear film is likely to affect biometry. Moreover, special intraoperative considerations are needed in eyes with DED to reduce complications and improve postoperative outcomes. Dry eye disease (DED) is known to occur following an uneventful cataract surgery or a pre-existing DE

[Case of overlapping cancers complicated with sarcoidosis].

A 74-year-old man presented with left chest pain. He had been given a diagnosis of sarcoidosis at age 65. Chest CT films on admission revealed a mass shadow in the left lower lung field and a small nodule in the left upper lung field. Because the specimens of transbronchial biopsy were not diagnostic, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was performed. The pathologic diagnosis of the resected lung was overlapping cancers (large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma) complicated with sarcoidosis. Adjuvant chemotherapy was not performed. One year after surg

Local recurrence patterns after postoperative stereotactic radiation surgery to resected brain metastases: A quantitative analysis to guide target delineation.

PURPOSE: In the treatment of resected metastatic brain disease, a recent phase 3 trial by the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (N107C/CEC.3) surprisingly found that the local control rate for whole-brain radiation therapy was better than that of stereotactic radiation surgery (SRS). To optimize target delineation, we performed a quantitative analysis of local failure patterns after postoperative SRS. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with brain metastases who were treated with surgery and SRS to the cavity were evaluated. Local failure was defined by pathologic confirmation or magnetic reso

Evaluation of maxillary dental arch form in unilateral clefts of lip, alveolus, and palate from one month to four years.

This study evaluated the early changes of maxillary alveolar arches of operated unilateral cleft lip and palate patients. Dental casts were available at four age increments. Triangular flap cheiloplasty was carried out at an early age. Two-stage palatoplasty by vomer flap and soft palate closure took place later. Prior to lip repair, the alveolar arches were classified according to the relationship between greater and lesser segments. Almost a quarter had overlap of the alveolar segments with no contact between the alveolar ridges at the cleft site; some had no overlap with contact of the alve

Varying Degree of Overlap Following the Critical Steps of Lumbar Fusion and Short-term Outcomes.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort. OBJECTIVE: The present study analyzes the impact of end-overlap on short-term outcomes after single-level, posterior lumbar fusions. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Few studies have evaluated how "end-overlap" (i.e., surgical overlap after the critical elements of spinal procedures, such as during wound closure) influences surgical outcomes. METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed on 3563 consecutive adult patients undergoing single-level, posterior-only lumbar fusion over a 6-year period at a multi-hospital university health system. Exclusion criteria

A Generalized Full-to-Partial Registration Framework of 3D Point Sets for Computer-Aided Orthopedic Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The precise alignment of full and partial 3D point sets is a crucial technique in computer-aided orthopedic surgery, but remains a significant challenge. This registration process is complicated by the partial overlap between the full and partial 3D point sets, as well as the susceptibility of 3D point sets to noise interference and poor initialization conditions. METHODS: To address these issues, we propose a novel full-to-partial registration framework for computer-aided orthopedic surgery that utilizes reinforcement learning. Our proposed framework is both generalized and robust

Bilateral overlapping mucosal single-pedicle flaps for correction of soft palate defects.

The clinical outcomes of bilateral overlapping single-pedicle flaps used for repair of congenital cleft of the soft palate in 10 animals (nine dogs and one cat) are reported. Six animals had concurrent cleft of the hard palate repaired using a previously described mucoperiosteal flap technique. Animals ranged from one to 13 months of age at surgery, with follow-up ranging from two to 12 months. Healing was uncomplicated in all cases and provided excellent functional results.

An overlap case of Parry-Romberg syndrome and en coup de sabre with striking ocular involvement and anti-double-stranded DNA positivity.

Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) may overlap localized scleroderma (morphea) lesions with linear depression (en coup de sabre [ECDS]). Overlap case with PRS and ECDS was presented. Enophthalmos, uveitis, ocular torticollis, keratic linear precipitates, and anti-double-stranded DNA positivity were identified. Subendothelial keratic precipitates detected by an in vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy were the first profiled in the literature. Patients must be evaluated and followed up carefully by their clinics to prevent misdiagnosis and unnecessary procedures such as surgery of ocular torticolli

Application of overlap anastomosis in digestive tract reconstruction during minimally invasive Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy.

This study aims to assess the feasibility of the Overlap anastomosis technique in minimally invasive Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy. An accompanying video presentation elucidates our surgical procedures. A retrospective review of 46 patients diagnosed with middle and lower esophageal cancer was conducted. These patients underwent minimally invasive Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy with Overlap anastomosis between January 2019 and December 2020. A consistent team of surgeons performed all procedures. The initial phase involved laparoscopic stomach mobilization, intra-abdominal lymphadenectomies, and preparat

Enabling Navigation and Augmented Reality in the Sitting Position in Posterior Fossa Surgery Using Intraoperative Ultrasound.

Despite its broad use in cranial and spinal surgery, navigation support and microscope-based augmented reality (AR) have not yet found their way into posterior fossa surgery in the sitting position. While this position offers surgical benefits, navigation accuracy and thereof the use of navigation itself seems limited. Intraoperative ultrasound (iUS) can be applied at any time during surgery, delivering real-time images that can be used for accuracy verification and navigation updates. Within this study, its applicability in the sitting position was assessed. Data from 15 patients with lesions

Parkinsonism in Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus or Hydrocephalic Presentation in Parkinson's Disease: A Report of Three Cases.

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) occasionally presents with parkinsonism, in addition to its classic triad of symptoms. However, it remains unclear whether such parkinsonism reflects an inherent manifestation of iNPH or comorbid Parkinson's disease, and whether it is levodopa-responsive. We report three patients exhibiting both hydrocephalus and parkinsonism. Two improved with both levodopa and shunt surgery; one improved only with levodopa and not with spinal tap. In one dual responder, dopamine transporter uptake improved postoperatively, and motor symptoms remained stable des

Multi-reflecting time-of-flight mass spectrometry enables high-accuracy metabolite identification in a demonstration study using serum samples from COVID-19 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate metabolite identification remains a major challenge in untargeted metabolomics due to overlapping signals, isomeric compounds, and insufficient mass resolution. The multi-reflecting time-of-flight (MRT) platform provides mass resolution exceeding 200,000 Full Width at Half Maximum and sub-ppm mass accuracy, enabling detailed isotopic fine structure analysis. OBJECTIVES: The performance of the MRT platforms in identifying lipids and metabolites was evaluated using selected serum samples from a group of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. METHODS: Lipids and polar metabolite

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome With Central and Peripheral Nervous System Involvement in a Patient With Metastatic Lung Cancer.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain disorder characterized by sensory, motor, autonomic, and trophic disturbances, often following trauma, surgery, or neurologic injury. We present a diagnostically complex case with overlapping features of both type I and type II CRPS in a 64-year-old man with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma involving the central nervous system (CNS). The patient developed neuropathic pain, weakness, and edema in the left upper and lower extremities following trauma, radiation, and cervical and lumbosacral radiculopathies. Although his presentation met the B

Arterial-enteric fistula after pelvic lymphadenectomy in secondary cytoreductive surgery for recurrent ovarian cancer.

In 6.2% of gynaecologic malignancies, vascular involvement is reported. Cytoreductive surgery presents in those cases a higher rate of major complications. Arterial-enteric fistula is a very rare post-surgical complication with serious repercussions on the patient's life due to intestinal haemorrhage and the overlapping sepsis. This is the first case report about iliac-colonic fistula formation in recurrent ovarian cancer with lymph-node metastasis after laparoscopic secondary cytoreductive surgery in a 75-year-old woman and its successful surgical management. A literature review about arteria

MU-Glioma Post: A comprehensive dataset of automated MR multi-sequence segmentation and clinical features.

Gliomas represent a heterogenous group of primary brain tumors with overlapping imaging phenotypes. Treatment typically includes surgery and/or chemoradiation, however this varies based on the overall lesion and clinical presentation. This heterogeneity in both lesion characteristics and management strategies contributes to a lack of reliable findings when evaluating treatment outcomes with conventional MRI. The overlapping imaging features of radiation necrosis and tumor progression post-treatment can be particularly challenging for radiologists. We present a dataset of 203 glioma patients wi

Anal encirclement with sphincter repair (AESR procedure) using a biological graft for anal sphincter damage involving the entire circumference.

AIM: The effect of a biological material to support an overlapping sphincter repair was investigated in patients with damage to the entire circumference of the external sphincter due to radiation or trauma. METHOD: A tunnel is created under the damaged external anal sphincter muscle to encircle the anal canal. A biological graft (Surgisis™; 6 ply, 2×20 cm) is then inserted through the tunnel and sutured to the muscle after being pulled firmly to close the patulous anus. An overlapping repair is then carried out. Between January 2009 and June 2010, 13 patients underwent this procedure. RESULT

["Ear camp" for children in Namibia. A field report].

BACKGROUND: Ear surgery is urgently needed in northern Namibia as many children cannot even be provided with hearing aids due to chronically discharging ears, not to forget possible complications of untreated cholesteatoma. METHODS: During the two "ear camps" in 2003 and 2004, 61 children (median age 12 years) and one adult were operated, mainly for (sub)total defects of the tympanic membrane (81 tympanoplasties). PATIENTS AND RESULTS: We performed tympanoplasty type I in 33 cases and type III in 48 cases, mostly using autogenous ossicles and titanium prostheses. In 39 cases, an antrotomy or

A preliminary study on the use of cyanoacrylate glue for the closure of fetal membranes.

Amnion leakage, infection and inflammation are the most important problems of intrauterine fetal surgery. This study aimed to determine the shear strength characteristics of fetal membranes attached with cyanoacrylate glue. Fresh amniochorionic membrane stripes (40x30 mm) were prepared after ten term elective cesarean section patients. Two stripes were attached with 5 mm overlapping and an increasing weight was applied until separation. Shear strength of the attached segment and resultant normal stresses developed in the membrane were calculated. Finally, corresponding intraluminal pressure th
