Evaluation of an oviposition-stimulating kairomone for the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, in Recife, Brazil.

A synthetic mixture of an oviposition-stimulating kairomone for the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, comprising of 83% tetradecanoic acid, 16% nonanoic acid and 1% tetradecanoic acid methyl ester (NTT, in short) was tested in a dengue endemic area in Recife, Brazil. Gravid female mosquitoes confined to a cage under semi-field conditions deposited significantly higher numbers of eggs in traps baited with NTT at doses ranging from 0.6 to 600 ng/microl than in control (water) traps. When tested in homes, egg-laying in traps baited with 60 ng NTT/microl (final concentration in trap, approxima

Lysine Triggers Acute Oviposition by Activating the 20E-ETH-JH Signaling Cascade in Drosophila melanogaster.

Reproductive performance is closely linked to nutrient availability, yet the specific nutrient-derived cues governing oviposition decision-making remain inadequately defined. Chemically defined holidic media used in Drosophila melanogaster studies provide precise control over dietary components; however, the mechanisms by which individual nutrients exert acute effects on inter-organ endocrine signaling to trigger oviposition behavior are not well understood. In a two-choice oviposition assay, where substrates are presented within the same chamber, we observed that HM induces a rapid increase i

Larvicide-mediated oviposition and ovicidal activity among treehole and container-inhabiting mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) species.

Larval application of insecticides (larviciding) is primarily conducted using a variety of biorational compounds as an essential function within integrated mosquito management. Larvicide-treated water has been sporadically investigated for deterring oviposition, but prior efforts have been primarily focused on Aedes aegypti (L.) with limited representation by other peridomestic or treehole species. A series of laboratory assays were conducted using 20 lb/acre (22.4 kg/ha) treatments of Lysinibacillus sphaericus (VectoLex FG), spinosad (Natular G30), and methoprene (Altosid XR-G Ultra) and comp

Inhibition of 19S proteasome deubiquitinating activity in Schistosoma mansoni affects viability, oviposition, and structural changes.

The proteasome is the key player in the cellular protein degradation machinery and is pivotal for protein homeostasis and Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni) survival. Our group study provides insights into proteasome inhibitors and reveals that selective schistosomiasis agents represent an interesting branch of proteasome research linked to the development of new drugs for this neglected disease. Here, we explored the phenotypic response of S. mansoni to b-AP15, a bis-benzylidine piperidone that inhibits 26S proteasome deubiquitinases (DUBs), ubiquitin-specific protease 14 (USP14), and ubiquitin

Oviposition Responses and Potential Larval Control Methods of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) in Downspout Extensions.

Aedes albopictus (Skuse) is an important invasive species and vector of several important arboviruses across the globe. This species uses small water-holding cryptic containers as egg laying sites, which pose serious challenges to effective control of adult mosquito populations. Herein, we examined the response of gravid female Ae. albopictus to various features of common downspout extension tubes associated with human dwellings and the effectiveness of control efforts to eliminate larvae. Controlled field trials quantified oviposition in 1) extensions versus rubber bowls meant to mimic other

Experience- and age-mediated oviposition behaviour in the yellow fever mosquito Stegomyia aegypti (=Aedes aegypti).

In repeated behaviours such as those of feeding and reproduction, past experiences can inform future behaviour. By altering their behaviour in response to environmental stimuli, insects in highly variable landscapes can tailor their behaviour to their particular environment. In particular, female mosquitoes may benefit from plasticity in their choice of egg-laying site as these sites are often temporally variable and clustered. The opportunity to adapt egg-laying behaviour to past experience also exists for mosquito populations as females typically lay eggs multiple times throughout their live

Does autocthonous primary production influence oviposition by Aedes japonicus japonicus (Diptera: Culicidae) in container habitats?

Aedes (Finlaya) japonicus japonicus (Theobald) (Diptera: Culicidae) is recently invasive in North America and has expanded its range rapidly since 1998. Throughout its native and expanded range, Ae. j. japonicus larvae are commonly observed in many types of natural and artificial water-filled containers that vary in organic matter content and exposure to sunlight. Larvae are most often found in containers with decaying leaf material or algae, and we postulated that the added autocthonous primary production from algae could be both an important food source for larvae and an influential oviposit

An odorant receptor from the southern house mosquito Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus sensitive to oviposition attractants.

BACKGROUND: Insect odorant receptors (ORs) are heteromers comprised of highly variable odorant-binding subunits associated with one conserved co-receptor. They are potential molecular targets for the development of novel mosquito attractants and repellents. ORs have been identified in the malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae, and in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. However, they are still unknown in the Southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, which transmits pathogens that cause human diseases throughout the world, including West Nile Virus in the United States. METHODOLOGY:

Cresol Derivatives from Bacillus subtilis as Natural Oviposition Modulator of Culex quinquefasciatus: A Molecular Docking Approach.

Mosquitoes rely heavily on olfactory cues for locating suitable oviposition sites, with microbial communities in aquatic habitats playing a crucial role in producing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that influence mosquito behaviour. In this study, we isolated Bacillus subtilis DHB13 from the breeding habitat of Culex quinquefasciatus, a major vector of several human diseases. The partial 16S rRNA gene sequence of the isolate has been submitted to NCBI GenBank with the accession number PV698100. The identity and resistance profile of the strain was confirmed through biochemical and antibiotic

Edge effects concentrate Conotrachelus nenuphar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) oviposition with consequences for larval performance and fruit yield.

Edge-associated distributions of animals are common in natural and managed landscapes, where habitat contrasts influence species densities, behavior, and population dynamics. In agricultural systems, field edges often concentrate insect pests and their associated damage, yet whether edge aggregation enhances pest performance or creates density-dependent constraints remains unclear. We investigated this relationship in the North American tree fruit pest, plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), by quantifying pest spatial distribution, fruit injury, and reproductive pe

Chemical characterization and bioactivity of cigarette butt extract as oviposition deterrent and larvicide against Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever, poses a global health challenge. Traditional vector control strategies predominantly rely on broad-spectrum insecticides, which not only contribute to development of resistance in mosquitoes but also pose significant risks to non-target organisms and the environment. Here, we assessed the potential of cigarette butt (CB) extract for the management of A. aegypti population. Globally, 4.5 trillion CBs are being wasted annually, which is expected to rise to nine trillion by 2025. So, repurposing this waste

A potential link between aromatics-induced oviposition repellency behaviors and specific odorant receptor of Aedes albopictus.

BACKGROUND: The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is a competent vector for the spread of several viral arboviruses including dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. Several vital mosquito behaviors linked to survival and reproduction are primarily dependent on a sophisticated olfactory system for semiochemical perception. However, a limited number of studies has hampered our understanding of the relationship between the A. albopictus acute olfactory system and the complex chemical world. RESULTS: Here, we performed a qRT-PCR assay on antennae from A. albopictus of differing sex, age and physiol

Accessory gland protein regulates pairing process and oviposition in the subterranean termite Reticulitermes chinensis after swarming.

Swarming and pairing behaviors are significant to population dispersal of termites. Tandem running is a key process in pairing behavior of dealates to find a mate. Succinylation can lead to significant changes in protein structure and function, which is widely involved in metabolism and behavior regulation in many organisms. However, whether succinylation modification regulates termites' tandem running is currently unknown. In this research, we performed quantitative modified proteomics of the subterranean termite Reticulitermes chinensis Snyder before and after alate swarming. The succinylati

Identification of oviposition attractants of the secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria (F.) released from rotten chicken liver.

The secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria (F.), is an important blowfly species affecting both livestock and humans. It can transmit pathogenic disease agents mechanically and is an agent of facultative myiasis, which leads to economic losses. The adult flies are attracted to decomposing carcasses, carrion, or rotten meat in order to deposit their eggs, and the hatched larvae develop on these decaying organic materials. This research was aimed to identify volatiles emitted from rotten chicken livers that were reported previously to attract gravid females. In laboratory oviposition assays

A Bacterium Derived from the Ovary of the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) Attract Oviposition of the Host.

The black soldier fly, BSF (Hermetia illucens) has extensive applications in insect protein production and organic waste conversion, serving as a crucial resource insect. However, large-scale breeding faces challenges such as low adult mating rates, unstable oviposition, and inefficient egg collection, which significantly hinder the industrial application of BSF. In this study, we aimed to enhance the oviposition efficiency of BSF by utilizing the microbes within it. We isolated a strain of Serratia marcescens from the ovaries of the BSF, which can attract BSF to lay eggs by producing dimethyl

Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide on Oviposition Site Preference and Egg Hatching of the Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) Mosquito.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) occurs in the environment, including in aquatic environments where mosquitoes might lay eggs. However, little is known about the compound's impact on mosquitoes. We conducted an experiment to determine the effect of H2O2 on Ae. aegypti oviposition behavior and egg hatching using H2O2 concentrations similar to those in natural aquatic environments. Oviposition behavior was evaluated by dual-choice and multi-choice bioassays. Gravid Ae. aegypti mosquitoes were placed in cages with containers with different H2O2 concentrations (5, 25, 50, and 100 μM). After 72 h, the numb

The influence of oviposition status on measures of transmission potential in malaria-infected mosquitoes depends on sugar availability.

BACKGROUND: Like other oviparous organisms, the gonotrophic cycle of mosquitoes is not complete until they have selected a suitable habitat to oviposit. In addition to the evolutionary constraints associated with selective oviposition behavior, the physiological demands relative to an organism's oviposition status also influence their nutrient requirement from the environment. Yet, studies that measure transmission potential (vectorial capacity or competence) of mosquito-borne parasites rarely consider whether the rates of parasite replication and development could be influenced by these const

Temperature-Mediated Kill and Oviposition of Western Cherry Fruit Fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) in the Presence of Spinosad.

Western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a quarantine pest of sweet cherry (Prunus avium (L.) L.) that is managed using insecticides, including spinosad, an organic compound that can be applied in low spray volumes. Identifying factors that can increase the efficacy of spinosad can be useful for improving fly control. Here, the major objective was to determine if temperature mediates kill and oviposition of R. indifferens in the presence of low spinosad coverage in the laboratory. Experiments were conducted by placing flies in cages with cherries and w
