BACKGROUND: Adding intraperitoneal paclitaxel (IP-PTX) to paclitaxel/5-fluoropyrimidine has shown promising results in patients with gastric cancer peritoneal metastases (GCPM) but has not been studied with standard-of-care platinum/fluoropyrimidine combinations. Our goal to was evaluate IP-PTX with capecitabine/oxaliplatin (XELOX) in GCPM.

The status of mitochondrial functioning in Reye's syndrome was assessed by comparing organic acid profiles from nine pathological urines with those from normal urines. It was found that Reye's syndrome urines have a normal content of succinic, oxaloacetic, aconitic, and citric acids suggesting that the enzymes of the acid cycle are functional. Elevated pyruvate and depressed alpha-ketoglutarate levels were observed. Abnormal urinary constituents detected were salicylic and adipic acids. Presence of the latter indicates that the enzymes of fatty acid beta-oxidation are functional.

The activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH Px), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD), hexokinase, and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (EGOT) was measured in 78 blood samples. GSH Px activity was not found to correlate with hexokinase or EGOT activity, indicating that it was not a strongly age-dependent enzyme. Although modest elevations of GSH Px activity were observed in the red cells of patients with a variety of hematologic disorders, the most consistent and striking increases in activity were observed in G-6-PD-deficient subjects.

Rabies, caused by rabies virus (RABV), is a widespread zoonosis that is nearly 100% fatal. Alteration of the metabolic environment affects viral replication and the immune response during viral infection. In this study, glucose uptake was increased in mouse brains at the late stage of infection with different RABV strains (lab-attenuated CVS strain and wild-type DRV strain). To illustrate the mechanism underlying glucose metabolism alteration, comprehensive analysis of lysine acetylation and target analysis of energy metabolites in mouse brains infected with CVS and DRV strains were performed.

The patient was a 62-year-old man with bowel obstruction in a locally advanced rectal cancer. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen showed tumor enlargement(11.4 × 9.0 cm)that invaded the urinary bladder, but no distant metastasis. Fulminant hepatic failure has been reported in patients with chronic congestive heart failure. This report summarizes serum profiles of liver enzymes of divers during 2 dry saturation dives to 31 ATA. In both dives, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), and alkaline phosphatase were significantly elevated at 31 ATA when compared to predive control levels. Four cases of fulminant hepatic disease caused by lymphoreticular infiltration are described. All 4 patients died within a few weeks and clinical diagnoses included viral hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, and drug hepatitis. A diagnosis of malignancy was made prior to autopsy in only 1 of the 4 patients.
