Cryptic diversity in Indo-Pacific coral-reef fishes revealed by DNA-barcoding provides new support to the centre-of-overlap hypothesis.

Diversity in coral reef fishes is not evenly distributed and tends to accumulate in the Indo-Malay-Philippines Archipelago (IMPA). The comprehension of the mechanisms that initiated this pattern is in its infancy despite its importance for the conservation of coral reefs. Considering the IMPA either as an area of overlap or a cradle of marine biodiversity, the hypotheses proposed to account for this pattern rely on extant knowledge about taxonomy and species range distribution. The recent large-scale use of standard molecular data (DNA barcoding), however, has revealed the importance of taking

Anthropogenic Aerosols Have Significantly Weakened the Regional Summertime Circulation in the Northern Hemisphere During the Satellite Era.

Reanalysis data show a significant weakening of summertime circulation in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) midlatitudes in the satellite era with implications for surface weather extremes. Recent work showed the weakening is not significantly affected by changes in the Arctic, but did not examine the role of different anthropogenic forcings such as aerosols. Here we use the Detection and Attribution Model Intercomparison Project (DAMIP) simulations to quantify the impact of anthropogenic aerosol and greenhouse gas forcing. The DAMIP simulations show aerosols and greenhouse gases contribute equally

Surgeons and suture zones: Hybridization among four surgeonfish species in the Indo-Pacific with variable evolutionary outcomes.

Closely related species can provide valuable insights into evolutionary processes through comparison of their ecology, geographic distribution and the history recorded in their genomes. In the Indo-Pacific, many reef fishes are divided into sister species that come into secondary contact at biogeographic borders, most prominently where Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean faunas meet. It is unclear whether hybridization in this contact zone represents incomplete speciation, secondary contact, an evolutionary dead-end (for hybrids) or some combination of the above. To address these issues, we conduct

Toxicity screening of 13 Gambierdiscus strains using neuro-2a and erythrocyte lysis bioassays.

Species in the epi-benthic dinoflagellate genus Gambierdiscus produce ciguatoxins (CTXs) and maitotoxins (MTXs), which are among the most potent marine toxins known. Consumption of fish contaminated with sufficient quantities of CTXs causes Ciguatera Fish Poisoning (CFP), the largest cause of non-bacterial food poisoning worldwide. Maitotoxins, which can be found in the digestive system of fish, could also contribute to CFP if such tissues are consumed. Recently, an increasing number of Gambierdiscus species have been identified; yet, little is known about the variation in toxicity among Gambi

Marine hybrid hotspot at Indo-Pacific biogeographic border.

Studying hybridization is crucial to understanding speciation and almost all our knowledge comes from terrestrial and freshwater environments. Marine hybrids are considered rare, particularly on species-rich coral reefs. Here, we report a significant marine hybrid zone at Christmas and Cocos Islands (eastern Indian Ocean) with 11 hybrid coral reef fishes (across six families); the most recorded hybrids of any marine location. In most cases, at least one of the parent species is rare (less than three individuals per 3000 m(2)), suggesting that hybridization has occurred because individuals of t

Miocene ocean circulation shifted expansive oxygen deficient zones to the Atlantic.

Contemporary observations indicate that dissolved oxygen concentrations are generally declining as global temperatures rise, which has broad implications for carbon cycling and the habitable ranges of marine animals. Here, we use the foraminiferal iodine redox tracer to evaluate the distributions of oxygen deficient zones (ODZs) and adjacent low oxygen water masses in the oceans during the Miocene Climatic Optimum ('MCO', 14.7-17 million years ago)-the last time that atmospheric CO2 was consistently higher than today. The Pacific lowest oxygen water masses were confined to a narrow latitudinal

Circumpolar phylogeography and demographic history of beluga whales reflect past climatic fluctuations.

Several Arctic marine mammal species are predicted to be negatively impacted by rapid sea ice loss associated with ongoing ocean warming. However, consequences for Arctic whales remain uncertain. To investigate how Arctic whales responded to past climatic fluctuations, we analysed 206 mitochondrial genomes from beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) sampled across their circumpolar range, and four nuclear genomes, covering both the Atlantic and the Pacific Arctic region. We found four well-differentiated mitochondrial lineages, which were established before the onset of the last glacial expansi

Is San Francisco Bay resistant to Pseudo-nitzschia and domoic acid?

San Francisco Bay (SFB), California, USA is the largest estuary in the western United States and is home to more than 7 million people in nine counties and 101 cities. It is highly nutrient enriched and is directly connected to the Gulf of the Farallones and coastal Pacific ocean through the Golden Gate strait. The Gulf of the Farallones is one of several "hotspots" for the neurotoxin domoic acid, produced by members of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Despite the close proximity, SFB has few reports of harmful algal blooms and low concentrations of domoic acid, suggesting that SFB is somehow resis

Plate tectonic history and ocean oxygenation shaping biogeography of hydrothermal bacterial community.

The influence of plate tectonics on microbial distributions remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that the global biogeography of hydrothermal vent-endemic chemoautotrophic microbiota is structured by the tectonic history of the global major oceans. These microbiota, particularly anaerobic ones, are significantly more abundant in early-origin Pacific, Arctic, and Mediterranean oceans, whereas they are notably scarce in late-formed Atlantic and Indian Oceans. This pattern was attributed to the timing of ocean formation and its interplay with global redox evolution. Fully oxygenated co

Nearly complete late Eocene skull from the North Pacific elucidates the cranial morphology and affinities of the penguin-like Plotopteridae.

The extinct Plotopteridae were penguin-like, wing-propelled diving birds of the North Pacific. Recently, the oldest and most complete plotopterid skull has been discovered in the late Eocene lower part of the Lincoln Creek Formation, southern Olympic Peninsula (Washington State, USA), and informs the poorly known cranial morphology of these birds. This skull is somewhat larger than previously described partial skulls from the Oligocene Pysht Formation of the northern Olympic Peninsula, from which it also differs in the shape of the nostrils. It may represent the genus Klallamornis, but a defin

Tracking the pumice rafts from the Fukutoku-Okanoba submarine volcano with Satellites and a Lagrangian Particles trajectory model.

On August 13th, 2021, the Fukutoku-Okanoba, a submarine volcano in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, erupted. Satellites detected various pumice rafts that had drifted westward to reach southern Japan over two months. To cope with the potential danger from pumice rafts, predicting their trajectories is crucial. Using a Lagrangian particle tracking model, the trajectories of the rafts were investigated. The model results showed strong sensitivity to the windage coefficient of pumice rafts, which is uncertain and could cause significant errors. An optimal windage coefficient was estimated by comparin

Mitochondrial DNA reveals secondary contact in Japanese harbour seals, the southernmost population in the western Pacific.

In this study, we used relatively large number of samples (n = 178) and control region of mtDNA (454bp) to clearify the divergence history of Japanese harbour seals (Phoca vitulina stejnegeri) and phylogenetic relationship between the seals in Japan and other countries. Our results suggested that Japanese harbour seals possibly consisted of more than two lineages and secondary contact of populations after a long isolation. Furthermore, one of the lineage was made only by Japanese harbour seals (Group P1). The proportion of Group P1 was the highest at the South West and gradually decreased towa

Prey-mediated behavioral responses of feeding blue whales in controlled sound exposure experiments.

Behavioral response studies provide significant insights into the nature, magnitude, and consequences of changes in animal behavior in response to some external stimulus. Controlled exposure experiments (CEEs) to study behavioral response have faced challenges in quantifying the importance of and interaction among individual variability, exposure conditions, and environmental covariates. To investigate these complex parameters relative to blue whale behavior and how it may change as a function of certain sounds, we deployed multi-sensor acoustic tags and conducted CEEs using simulated mid-freq

Dietary records in cosmopolitan copepod Calanus spp. revealed large contribution of dinoflagellates in subarctic Pacific.

Global warming and the resulting surface seawater stratification have led to dominance of small phytoplankton, driving substantial changes in planktonic ecosystem structure. This study investigates the composition and nitrogen sources of phytoplankton and other basal resources by analyzing the cosmopolitan copepod Calanus spp. in western North Pacific. Carbon isotope ratios of amino acids (δ13CAA) in Calanus spp. tissue revealed geographically distinct basal diets: N2-fixing organisms (19.6 ± 5.8%) and heterotrophic bacteria (30.6 ± 5.3%) in the tropical and subtropical Pacific, and dinoflagel

The effects of the El Niño Southern Oscillation on skin and skin-related diseases: a message from the International Society of Dermatology Climate Change Task Force.

The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a complex climate phenomenon occurring in the Pacific Ocean at intervals of 2-7 years. The term refers to fluctuations in ocean temperatures in the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean (El Niño [the warm phase of ENSO] and La Niña [the cool phase of ENSO]) and in atmospheric pressure across the Pacific basin (Southern Oscillation). This weather pattern is attributed with causing climate change in certain parts of the world and is associated with disease outbreaks. The question of how ENSO affects skin and skin-related disease is relatively unanswered. We ai

Biogenic silica fluxes in the seasonally ice-covered Northwind Ridge, western Arctic Ocean: drivers and implications for the biological carbon pump.

The silica cycle is intimately coupled with marine food-web dynamics, biogeochemical transformations, and the efficiency of the biological carbon pump (BCP). To elucidate the factors controlling biogenic silica (bSiO2) flux and its role in carbon export, we conducted a year-long (August 2008-September 2009) sediment trap deployment on the Northwind Ridge in the western Arctic Ocean. BSiO2 fluxes exhibited a pronounced seasonal signal, closely paralleling those of particulate organic carbon (POC) and diatoms, with mean fluxes in 2009 tripling those of 2008. This interannual disparity was primar

Past disturbances and local conditions influence the recovery rates of coral reefs.

Corals are being increasingly subjected to marine heatwaves. Theory suggests that increasing the intensity of disturbances reduces recovery rates, which inspired us to examine the recovery rates of coral cover following marine heatwaves, cyclones, and other disturbances at 1921 study sites, in 58 countries and three oceans, from 1977 to 2020. In the Atlantic Ocean, coral cover has decreased fourfold since the 1970s, and recovery rates following disturbances have been relatively slow, except in the Antilles. By contrast, reefs in the Pacific and Indian Oceans have maintained coral cover and rec

Twenty thousand fishes under the seas: Insights into the collection and storage of trematodes from the examination of 20,000 fishes in the tropical Indo west-Pacific.

The techniques employed to collect and store trematodes vary between research groups, and although these differences are sometimes necessitated by distinctions in the hosts examined, they are more commonly an artefact of instruction. As a general rule, we tend to follow what we were taught rather than explore new techniques. A major reason for this is that there are few technique papers in the published literature. Inspired by a collaborative workshop at the Trematodes 2024 symposium, we outline our techniques and processes for collecting adult trematodes from fishes and discuss the improvemen
