Acute respiratory tract infections (ARIs) are a major contributor to infant morbidity globally. We aimed to identify modifiable behavioral risk factors for ARI among infants in a tropical, resource-limited setting. This prospective cohort study enrolled healthy term infants (∼2 months old) at Songklanagarind Hospital. The primary exposures included four modifiable factors during the first 6 months of life: exclusive breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, pacifier usage, and passive smoking. We used multiple Poisson regression models to identify factors associated with the frequency of ARI between 6 an

Soil/dust ingestion is a critical pathway for exposure to contaminants in and around the home. Estimating ingestion requires knowledge of key behaviors for young children related to mouthing behaviors and handwashing habits. Surveys are invaluable tools in understanding the extent of human exposure to chemicals in and around the home. By linking behavioral patterns with environmental data, surveys can raise awareness about the health risks posed by household contaminants in soil and dust and can improve exposure and risk estimates. The current study aimed to quantify soil and dust related inge

Deleterious oral habits (DOH) have been described as a common finding in pediatric series. Studies have investigated their association with local and systemic health problems. In this study, the association between DOH and asthma was investigated. PubMed, Scopus, Lilacs, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and OpenThesis were accessed to identify observational studies that evaluated the association between DOH (thumb sucking, pacifier use, onychophagia or nail biting, bottle feeding) and asthma in children aged 2-17 years. Information on DOH was obtained from the verbal report of the children's pa

BACKGROUND: Actual caries figures emphasize the need to identify the risk indicators involved in the disease's development. The hypothesis that certain risk indicators might affect the dynamic evolution of the caries process was assessed; to clarify this premise, a cross-sectional survey was performed in school children.
METHODS: A total of 390 subjects aged 6-8 years old were randomly selected. Caries was assessed, and the subjects were stratified as follows: i) highest caries score; ii) most prevalent caries score; and iii) number of affected teeth. Parents/guardians completed a questionnai

PURPOSE: Compare infant suction in babies with and without ankyloglossia using a microprocessor-controlled pressure sensor coupled to a pacifier.
METHODS: Fifty-five infants from 0 to 2 months of age underwent clinical examination for ankyloglossia, after which they were offered a silicone pacifier connected to the pressure acquisitiondevice and suction activity was recorded. Thus, we extracted the frequency of sucks within a burst, the average suck duration, the burst duration, the number of sucks per burst, the maximum amplitude of sucks per burst and the inter-burst interval.
RESULTS: The

The impact of controlled administration of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 (BB-12) on the risk of acute infectious diseases was studied in healthy newborn infants. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 109 newborn 1-month-old infants were assigned randomly to a probiotic group receiving a BB-12-containing tablet (n 55) or to a control group receiving a control tablet (n 54). Test tablets were administered to the infants twice a day (daily dose of BB-12 10 billion colony-forming units) from the age of 1-2 months to 8 months with a novel slow-release pacifier or a spoon. B

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate risk factors for acute respiratory disease hospitalizations in children under one year of age.
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in the city of Pelotas, Southern Brazil. Cases were children under one year of age who were hospitalized due to acute respiratory diseases from August 1997 to July 1998. Controls were same-age community children randomly selected without previous respiratory disease hospitalization. A questionnaire about risk factors exposure was applied to the mothers of cases and controls. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses through log

Malocclusions are changes in the development of craniofacial structures of high prevalence. Associated risk factors are diverse and nutritional and non-nutritional suction habits are the most reported. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of malocclusions in the mixed dentition and to study possible association with practices of breastfeeding and suction habits among Brazilian schoolchildren. A cross-sectional study involving a sample of 664 6-year-old children and their families was carried out. Data collection was done through interviews with mothers in the homes and oral exa

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that pain affects the goodness of breastfeeding.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-nine patients were interviewed regarding satisfaction in breastfeeding, tiredness, uterine pain, nipple and other pain, and analgesic use at day three and at first, second, third, and fourth week after birth. Data regarding the mode of delivery were recorded from medical charts. Milk formula supplements, bottle use, pacifier use, and nipple shields use were considered as variables suggesting unsuccessful breastfeeding.
RESULTS: At third day after delivery, it appeared that analgesic use

Infantile botulism classically presents with a triad of clinical features: Bulbar palsies (slow/absent pupil response) Alert Absent fever Other common features are: Constipation, ptosis and poor feeding The diagnosis is a clinical one, confirmed by EMG and by testing stool for the organism, C. botulinum, or its toxin. Parents should be advised not to dip pacifiers in honey. In future Botulinum Immune Globulin may be available and should be considered if further trials are published showing benefit. Nosocomial infections, such as RSV, are important and should be carefully avoided, particularly

Circumcision is the most common surgical procedure performed in the neonatal period in North America. If untreated, the pain of circumcision causes both short and long term changes in infant behaviours. The most widely studied pharmacological intervention for pain management during circumcision is dorsal penile nerve block (DPNB) by injected lidocaine (lignocaine). Randomised controlled trials have demonstrated its efficacy; infants premedicated with lidocaine have significantly smaller changes in physiological and pain-related behaviours compared with infants who are not given analgesics. BACKGROUND: Mastication is important for breaking down food, aiding swallowing and nutrients absorption, and is therefore fundamental to a child's development. Studies have shown poor masticatory function to be associated with younger age and presence of caries. However, studies of the association between masticatory function and malocclusion yielded contradictory results. The aim of this study is therefore to investigate the association between three-dimensional occlusal features with masticatory function, among preschool children in Hong Kong.
METHODS: Self-administered questionnaires on ma

The development of the craniomandibular system is guided by genetic interactions and environmental factors, including specific habits such as breastfeeding, bottle feeding, thumb sucking and the use of pacifiers. These habits can have a considerable impact on the growth of the developing jaws and can lead to malocclusion in children. This review aims to investigate potential associations between non-nutritive sucking habits (NNSHs) and malocclusions compared to the presence of nutritive sucking habits (NSHs). To carry out this systematic review, we followed the PRISMA protocol and performed a

The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of malocclusion and associated variables such as deleterious habits (DH) and oronasopharyngeal alterations (OA), mouth breathing, atypical phonation, and atypical swallowing in three-year-old children in Vitória, Espírito Santo State, Brazil. The sample included 291 children of both sexes enrolled in a Children's Educational Center and selected through probability sampling by conglomerates. Logistic regression indicated a high relative risk (RR) in children with altered overjet, open bite, and cross-bite to present mouth breathing (RR

BACKGROUND: The association between prolonged non-nutritive sucking habits (NNSHs, ie, sucking pacifiers or fingers) and maxillofacial growth anomalies in the general population has been widely described. Because maturation of sucking abilities is not fully achieved in very preterm infants (<32 weeks' gestation), neonatal services worldwide rely on the use of pacifiers to promote the development of adequate sucking reflexes, possibly prolonging NNSHs during infancy.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to describe the frequency and to identify factors associated with NNSHs at age 2 years in very preterm child
