Anatomically Accurate, High-Resolution Modeling of the Human Index Finger Using In Vivo Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Anatomically accurate models of a human finger can be useful in simulating various disorders. In order to have potential clinical value, such models need to include a large number of tissue types, identified by an experienced professional, and should be versatile enough to be readily tailored to specific pathologies. Magnetic resonance images were acquired at ultrahigh magnetic field (7 T) with a radio-frequency coil specially designed for finger imaging. Segmentation was carried out under the supervision of an experienced radiologist to accurately capture various tissue types (TTs). The final

A thalamic terminus of the lateral cervical nucleus: the lateral division of the posterior nuclear group.

The submodality and receptive field properties of single units in the lateral cervical nucleus (LCN) of barbiturate anesthetized cats were studied with glass microelectrodes. In other experiments, a region of the posterior thalamus containing neurons with properties comparable to those seen in the LCN was examined with tungsten microelectrodes. The responses of most units in the LCN reflected a major input from large myelinated afferent fibers innervating guard hairs but no input from Pacinian afferent fibers. The large size of the receptive fields indicated that excitatory input converged sel

Vibrotactile perception in Dupuytren disease.

PURPOSE: Dupuytren disease (DD) has been associated with enlarged Pacinian corpuscles (PCs) and with PCs having a greater number of lamellae. Based on these associations, we hypothesized that subjects with DD would have altered sensitivity to high-frequency vibrations and that the changes would be more prominent at 250 Hz, where healthy subjects demonstrate the highest sensitivity. METHODS: A novel device was created to deliver vibrations of specific frequencies and amplitudes to the fingers and palm. Using a Psi-marginal adaptive algorithm, vibrotactile perception thresholds (VPTs) were dete

Population-response model for vibrotactile spatial summation.

A computational model based on previous physiological and psychophysical data is presented for the human Pacinian (P) psychophysical channel. The model can predict the probability of detection in simple psychophysical tasks, and hence psychometric functions and thresholds. The model simulates stimulating variable and fixed glabrous skin sites with different-sized contactors and includes spatial variation of monkey P-fiber sensitivities. Therefore, it is especially suitable for studying spatial summation, i.e. the improvement of threshold with increasing contactor area. Selective contributions

Studies of mechanoreceptors in skin of the snout of the echidna Tachyglossus aculeatus.

The echidna Tachyglossus aculeatus, together with the platypus, belongs to the monotremes, a group of mammals with a number of reptilian characteristics. A structure unique to the skin of monotremes is the push rod-a compacted column of epidermal cells that is 20 microns wide and 100 microns long with its tip at the skin surface, and that is able to move relatively independently of adjacent tissue. At the base of each push rod is a cluster of encapsulated nerve endings. Push rods are common in skin of the snout and have been postulated to have a mechanosensory function. Experiments were carrie

Function of the glenohumeral ligaments in active stabilisation of the shoulder joint.

UNLABELLED: The joint capsules and the glenohumeral ligaments of 12 human shoulder specimens were histologically investigated by light microscopy. Serial sections of 15 microns thickness were cut. The tissue was stained following the haematoxylin-eosin and van Giesson techniques. For specific identification of neural elements we made use of a special silver impregnation technique, described by Novotny, for staining axons in peripheral nerves. Axons of different diameters ranging from 0.2 microns to 70 microns were discovered within the ligaments. Close to the humeral site we found small nerves

Meningoceles, meningomyeloceles, and encephaloceles: a neuro-dermatopathologic study of 132 cases.

Because there have been few comprehensive histopathologic studies of meningomyeloceles and related malformations, we undertook a systematic study of these lesions. One hundred and thirty two cases were obtained from our surgical pathology files; these included 38 meningoceles, 71 meningomyeloceles, and 23 encephaloceles. Tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin; special stains included trichrome, alcian blue, Fontana-Masson, Nissl, Holzer, and immunoperoxidase for glial fibrillary acidic protein. Epithelial changes included ulceration, atrophy, or nevoid hyperplasia of the epide

Trapezius fascia reveals mechanosensory capacity and predominance of nociceptive axons in occipital neuralgia.

Occipital neuralgia (ON) is a complex and painful condition that presents significant clinical challenges, often resistant to conventional treatments. This study focuses on the trapezius fascia’s role in ON, exploring its neural and mechanosensitive properties. We conducted a detailed analysis of the trapezius fascia in 18 patients with ON and ten control patients using specific molecular markers (PGP9.5, S100, CGRP, TH and Piezo2). Our findings reveal a rich neural composition within the fascia, characterized by heterogenous tissues that include abundant collagen, vasculature, and diverse neu

Surgical Anatomy of the Supraretinacular Fat Pad: Sensory Innervation and Preservation in Open Carpal Tunnel Release.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Postoperative pain may occur following open carpal tunnel release (OCTR). Various causes have been postulated. During OCTR, adipose tissue located between the palmar aponeurosis and the flexor retinaculum is exposed. It is unknown whether damage to this pad of supraretinacular fat (SRF) might contribute to postoperative palmar pain or tenderness. We studied the sensory innervation of the SRF exposed in OCTR to assess whether SRF damage could potentially generate pain. METHODS: A microanatomic dissection of the innervation and vascular supply of the SRF was performed

Monkey median nerve repaired by nerve graft or collagen nerve guide tube.

Nerve regeneration was followed in 15 median and 1 ulnar nerve of eight Macaca fascicularis monkeys by serial electrophysiological assessments over a period of three and a half years. Nerve gaps of 5 mm at the wrist were bridged by collagen-based nerve guides, nerve autografts, or direct suture repairs. Thenar muscle reinnervation occurred between 50 and 70 d for all groups, indicating axonal elongation rates of approximately 1 mm/d. The recovery rates of the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) and the compound sensory action potential (CSAP) amplitudes were significantly slower after dire

Persistence of mechanoreceptors in ACL remnants: a histological and immunohistochemical analysis of 128 patients.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) remnants may retain sensory neural elements after rupture, potentially contributing to proprioceptive function and graft reinnervation following reconstruction. However, the persistence of mechanoreceptors in remnant tissues and the factors influencing their preservation remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of neural structures in ACL remnants using histological and immunohistochemical methods and to determine the association between mechanoreceptor preservation, injury duration, and remnant attachment pattern.

Mechanoreceptors in rat glabrous skin: redevelopment of function after nerve crush.

In the glabrous skin of the rat's hindfoot the same triple set of low-threshold mechanoreceptors is present as has been found in other mammals: slowly adapting (SA), rapidly adapting (RA), and very rapidly adapting Pacinian corpuscle-like (PC) receptors. Their functional characteristics were examined in normal rats and compared with those of sensitive mechanoreceptors found in the glabrous skin of the foot 2-24 wk after crush of the plantar nerves, resulting in regeneration of the transected nerve fibers. After 2 wk of nerve regeneration, low-threshold RA and SA cutaneous mechanoreceptors reap

Neural system antigens are recognized by autoantibodies from patients affected by a new variant of endemic pemphigus foliaceus in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Endemic pemphigus foliaceus (EPF), is also known as "fogo selvagem" or "wild fire," reflecting the intense burning sensation of the skin reported by patients with this disease. Based on this finding, we tested for neural autoreactivity in patients affected by a new variant of EPF (El Bagre-EPF). METHODS: We tested 20 El Bagre-EPF patients, 20 normal controls from the endemic area, and 20 age- and sex-matched normal controls from outside the endemic area. We tested for autoreactivity to several immunoglobulins and complement. Both human skin and bovine tail were used as antigens.

Neurovascular structures of the ligament of the head of femur.

The ligament of the head of femur (LHF), or ligamentum teres, is believed to provide blood supply to the head of femur and mechanical stability to the hip joint. But these functions in the adult are often debated. The existence and distribution of neurovascular structures within the ligament are not widely documented. This study examined the blood vessels and nervous tissue within the LHF to determine whether the ligament may have a vascular and proprioceptive function at the hip joint. Histological sections from the LHF from 10 embalmed hips (six female, four male; mean age 80.4 ± 8.7 years)

Ultrastructural studies of the dying-back process. IV. Differential vulnerability of PNS and CNS fibers in experimental central-peripheral distal axonopathies.

A companion paper in this issue (46) described the evolution of peripheral nervous system dying-back disease of the giant axonal type in animals chronically intoxicated with the neurotoxic hexacarbons n-hexane (CH3CH2CH2CH2CH2CH3), methyl n-butyl ketone or MBK (CH3COCH2CH2CH2CH3), and 2,5-hexanedione (CH3COCH2CH2COCH3). The present study compares the distribution and pattern of peripheral (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS) dying-back disease produced by these three neurotoxic hexacarbons with that produced by acrylamide (CH2CHCONH2), and, in addition, employs these compounds to address unr

Classification, oscillatory and alternating oscillatory firing of alpha 1 (FF) and alpha 2-motoneurons (FR) in patients with spinal cord lesion.

Single-nerve fibre action potentials (APs) were recorded extracellularly from sacral nerve roots of people with spinal cord lesion (patients with paraplegia). Single-fibre APs of certain fibres were identified by the conduction velocity and the AP waveform, and simultaneous impulse patterns were extracted from the summed impulse traffic and analysed with respect to spacio-temporal relationships. The velocity values of components of compound APs, induced by electrical nerve root stimulation or electrical intravesical stimulation, were similar to the group conduction velocity values obtained fro

Expert opinion on screening, diagnosis and management of diabetic peripheral neuropathy: a multidisciplinary approach.

The proposed expert opinion aimed to address the current knowledge on conceptual, clinical, and therapeutic aspects of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and to provide a guidance document to assist clinicians for the best practice in DPN care. The participating experts consider the suspicion of the disease by clinicians as a key factor in early recognition and diagnosis, emphasizing an improved awareness of the disease by the first-admission or referring physicians. The proposed "screening and diagnostic" algorithm involves the consideration of DPN in a patient with prediabetes or diabetes
