BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Purpureocillium lilacinum (previously known as Paecilomyces lilacinus) and Paecilomyces variotii cause hyalohyphomycosis.
CASE REPORT: In this study, we present a case of multiple subcutaneous abscesses of the lower limbs due to Purpureocillium lilacinum in a patient with myasthenia gravis and uncontrolled diabetes. Subcutaneous involvement of the lower limbs with this fungus is an unusual presentation. Pus aspirate collected on multiple occasions revealed hyaline septate hyphae under microscopic examination and Purpureocillium lilacinum grew on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar

A report is presented of a fatal systemic Cryptococcus noeformans infection involving the central nervous system of a dog and complicated by a concurrent infection of the brain and splene by an unidentified filamentous fungus resembling a Paecilomyces spp. The literature on cryptococcosis in domestic animals is briefly reviewed.

Iron (Fe) and water availability are closely linked, yet the mechanisms of tolerance to these combined stresses in soybean remain poorly understood. This study elucidates host-microbe interactions in Clark (tolerant) and Arisoy (sensitive) genotypes exposed to Fe deficiency and drought. This guideline is the second in the line of three for fungal diseases by ESCMID and other societies. The guideline tried to follow the AGREE criteria for the development of clinical guidelines. This guideline serves as a European and potentially world-wide recommendation for the diagnosis and management of rare and emerging fungi. They include mucormycosis, hyalohyphomycosis (Fusarium, Paecilomyces, Scedosporium, etc.), phaeohyphomycosis (Alternaria, Bipolaris, Cladosporium, Rhinocladiella, etc.), and emerging yeasts (Saccharomyces, Trichosporon, Rhodotorula, etc.).

Fungi, particularly molds that are cosmopolitan in soils, are frequent etiologic agents of opportunistic mycoses. The limited armamentarium of active and oral antifungal drugs against emerging non-Aspergillus molds is of particular concern. Current antifungal agents and the new orally available beta-1,3-d-glucan synthase inhibitor SCY-078 were tested in vitro against 135 clinical non-Aspergillus mold isolates. Akin to echinocandins, SCY-078 showed no or poor activity against Mucoromycotina and Fusarium spp. However, SCY-078 was highly active against Paecilomyces variotii and was the only compound displaying some activity against notoriously panresistant Scedosporium prolificans.

We reported three consecutive cases of severe fungal keratitis initially undiagnosed by corneal scrapping. Corneal biopsy showed fungal elements of Paecilomyces lilacinus, Fusarium solani, Scedosporium apiospermum. Most cases of fungal keratitis could be treated successfully if adequate antifungal therapy were started early. Early and accurate diagnosis is of major importance. The results of our cases confirm the superiority of corneal biopsy over corneal scrapping. Corneal biopsy is a procedure of choice in suspected cases of keratomycosis in which corneal scrapings fail.

Emergent pathogen as Purpureocillium lilacinum are becoming cause of morbidity and mortality in our population, especially in immunocompromised patients. We describe a case of hyalohyphomycosis in a diabetic man under systemic steroid treatment for a bullous pemphigoid. Treatment with different antimycotic drugs were ineffective and infection spread diffusely, leading to deterioration of general conditions and ultimately death. The aim of this article is to increase awareness of clinicians about this uncommon, but frequently fatal refractory mycotic infection.

OBJECTIVES: To provide a basis for clinical management decisions in Purpureocillium lilacinum infection.
METHODS: Unpublished cases of invasive P. lilacinum infection from the FungiScope® registry and all cases reported in the literature were analysed.
RESULTS: We identified 101 cases with invasive P. lilacinum infection. Main predisposing factors were haematological and oncological diseases in 31 cases (30.7%), steroid treatment in 27 cases (26.7%), solid organ transplant in 26 cases (25.7%), and diabetes mellitus in 19 cases (18.8%).
