Malignant potential of the cryptorchid testis.

A follow-up study of 224 male patients from Rochester, Minnesota, diagnosed with cryptorchidism during the period from 1935 through 1974 was conducted to assess the frequency of subsequent testicular neoplasms. Age-specific rates for testicular neoplasm in this community were used to estimate an expected number for comparison with that observed. Two malignant testicular neoplasms have occurred in this cohort; thus, the standardized morbidity ratio was 11.4 (95% confidence interval, 1.4 to 41.1). Of the 158 patients born in the community, 11% were known to have birth weights of less than 2,500

Pleomorphic adenoma rehabilitative treatment in growing up patient: a 20-years follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: Although tumors of minor salivary glands are rare, the pleomorphic adenoma is the most common pathology among the benign neoplasm and can be found with high prevalence in the junction between hard palate and soft palate. Most of the maxillary tumors are surgically treated through either a total or partial maxillectomy. However, surgical defects lead to both clinical and psychologic disorders for the patient. A postoperative obturator prosthesis is a good option in patients who underwent maxillectomy. It allows to restore both masticatory and speaking functions, as well as aesthetic

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the tongue: A case report and an overview of histogenetic concepts.

Adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC), a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma, is an aggressive and highly infiltrating epithelial neoplasm, which has a distinct histomorphological features comprising simultaneous areas of squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Some researchers consider it as a controversial neoplasm, as it may arise from the ducts of the minor salivary gland or from the overlying surface epithelium. In the head-and-neck region, commonly affected sites include paranasal sinuses, larynx and oral cavity. Areas of occurrence in the oral cavity include palate, tonsillar pillar are

Radiosensitive hemangiopericytoma in the soft palate.

Hemangiopericytomas are uncommon neoplasms of vascular origin, and rarely arise in the pharynx. We report a case of a 78-year-old female with hemangiopericytoma in her soft palate exhibiting prominent radiosensitivity. Hemangiopericytomas are considered to be radioresistant and wide local excision is a treatment of choice, but their nature is widely variable. In treating aggressive hemangiopericytomas, radiation therapy can be selected.

Congenital Epignathus Associated With a Tricuspid Incompetence.

Teratomas are germinal cell neoplasms containing tissues from all germinal layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm); however, they may show varying stages of maturity. We present a case of a 10-month-old Sudanese male patient who presented to the Khartoum Teaching Dental Hospital with a tumor occupying the hard palate since birth, causing reduced oral intake and failure to thrive. CT images showed soft and hard tissue masses originating from the hard palate and extending to the oral cavity. The treatment was initiated with nutritional support and consultation with pediatric physicians. The or

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Upper Lip: A Case Report.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most frequently encountered benign mixed tumor of the minor salivary gland and usually presents in the parotid; however, in the minor salivary gland, it is more common in the palate. Tumors of the minor salivary glands are uncommon, with the most common intraoral site reported being the hard and soft palate owing to the preponderance of minor salivary glands in this region followed by the lips. Pleomorphic adenoma arising from minor salivary glands of the lips tends to occur at an earlier age than it does at other sites. Pleomorphic adenoma of the lip is a rare neopl

Oral malignant melanoma--an unusual presentation.

Malignant melanoma is the least common but most deadly of all primary skin cancers. Oral malignant melanoma is a rare aggressive neoplasm usually seen in middle aged persons. This malignancy is more frequently seen on the hard palate and gingiva. Oral melanomas are associated with very poor prognosis because of the tendency to metastasise or invade tissues locally more readily than other malignant tumours of the oral cavity especially in the case of a geriatric patient. The surgical approach, combined with the chemotherapy, is the first choice treatment. This report highlights a case report of

Palatal lipoma: a case report.

Intraoral lipomas are benign mesenchymal neoplasms that originate in mature adipose cells with differential diagnosis of other soft tissue lesions. Lipoma, rarely, occurs in the oral cavity, and it corresponds to less than 4.4%, of all benign oral soft tissue tumors. Here, we are reporting a case of lipoma that occurred in the hard palate, which is extremely rare.

Surgical Management of Palatal Pleomorphic Adenoma (PPA) Recurrence After 10 years, Treated at a Brazilian Center - A Case Report.

Pleomorphic adenoma, considered the most frequent benign mixed neoplasm of the minor salivary glands, occurs mainly in the region of the hard palate, with slight predilection in females and peak of incidence between the third and fifth decades of life. An increase in recurrence rates has been associated with the histopathological variants of the tumor, cellular characteristics, stroma, and capsule rupture during surgical removal of the lesion. The present case report aims to describe the surgical approach performed on the patient, a 45-year-old woman with a recurrent Pleomorphic Adenoma (PA) i

Palatal plasmacytoid myoepithelioma.

Myoepitheliomas are benign neoplasms of salivary glands derived from myoepithelial cells. These tumors can occur at any age but are most common in young adults. This tumor is usually located in the parotid gland and the minor salivary glands of the soft palate and represents less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. The myoepithelioma is classified in the follow cells types: spindle, plasmacytoid, reticular, epitheliod, and clear, additionally, mixed histological forms are described. The plasmacytoid myoepithelioma from palate salivary glands is considered as a rare entity. A 45-year-old lady

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Upper Lip: A Rare Case.

Salivary gland tumors account for a small fraction of head and neck tumors. Pleomorphic adenoma, the most common salivary gland neoplasm, frequently arises in major salivary glands; its localization to minor salivary glands is uncommon and typically involves the palate. We describe a patient with an asymptomatic, long-standing mass of the upper lip, which was found to be a pleomorphic adenoma.

Huge nasopharyngeal teratoma with a cleft palate and bifid tongue in a patient with pierre robin syndrome.

PURPOSE: Nasopharyngeal teratoma is a very rare neoplasm that develops on the oronasal cavity as an expanding and cavity-filling lesion. We present a rare case of nasopharyngeal teratoma associated with a cleft palate and bifid tongue in a patient with Pierre Robin syndrome. METHODS: A preterm male neonate of 33 weeks and 6 days was referred to our department. A protruding solid mass with approximately 7.0 × 4.0-cm size arising from the vomer and combined cleft palate and tongue covered with pinkish skin with lanugo were observed. In addition, there was a bandlike tissue connecting vomer and

Malignant myoepithelioma of the palate: a case report with review of the clinicopathological characteristics.

A malignant myoepithelioma is one of the rarest salivary gland neoplasms which may either arise de novo or develop within a preexisting pleomorphic adenoma or benign myoepithelioma. The parotid gland is the most common primary site and the palate the most common intra-oral site of occurrence. Herein is present a case of a malignant myoepithelioma arising in the hard palate of a 79-year-old woman. The lesion had been examined by biopsy at another hospital, and diagnosed as a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. The patient underwent a wide local tumor resection. Examination of the res

Prosthetic and surgical management of osteogenic sarcoma of the maxilla.

Maxillary surgical defects resulting from resection of oral neoplasms vary in size from small perforations of the hard and soft palate to complete removal of these structures. Osteogenic sarcoma is of unknown etiology and is a rapidly growing tumor that may produce pain, paresthesia, and anesthesia. The recommended treatment of radical resection often results in defects that produce significant orofacial disfigurement. These defects, regardless of size, present significant functional disability, with compromised esthetics, mastication, and deglutition. Restoration with a maxillary obturator pr

Recurrent Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Palate: A Case Report.

Background: Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary-gland neoplasm and frequently affects the minor salivary glands of the palate. Although surgical excision is generally curative, incomplete encapsulation, pseudopod-like extensions, and microscopic tumor deposits may contribute to recurrence, which can occur many years after initial treatment. Recurrent palatal pleomorphic adenoma is uncommon and may present diagnostic and reconstructive challenges. Case Presentation: A 64-year-old man was referred with a painless, slowly enlarging recurrent mass of the right posterior hard pal

Cutaneous adnexal differentiation and stromal metaplasia in palate pleomorphic adenomas: a potential diagnostic pitfall that may be mistaken for malignancy.

Cutaneous adnexal differentiation is well-recognized in benign mixed tumors occurring in cutaneous sites. The incidence of this histologic finding in salivary gland sites is not known. We sought to describe the incidence of cutaneous adnexal differentiation in benign mixed tumors of the palate, lip, and parotid gland. Benign mixed tumors of the palate (n=30), lip (n=13), and parotid gland (n=37) resected between 1980 and 2009 at a single academic medical institution were reviewed. All hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections containing neoplasm were reviewed by all authors including one dermatop

Sequential therapy for extramedullary plasmacytoma of the palate: a rare case report with seven years of follow-up and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare solitary malignancy that accounts for 3% of plasma cell neoplasms, and EMP with a primary occurrence in the palate is extremely uncommon. Owing to the long course of EMP and the limited available data on treatment outcomes, there are no definitive guidelines for its management, especially for high-risk patients who are more susceptible to early progression to multiple myeloma. CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we review nine relevant studies and describe a 54-year-old woman who presented with an asymptomatic nonulcerative mass localized

Schwannoma originating in the soft palate: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Schwannomas are relatively uncommon, benign, slow-growing neoplasms, which are derived from schwann cells that can arise from any cranial, peripheral, or autonomic nerves. The involvement of the palate is a rare presentation and hardly reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the case of a 39-year-old woman with a history of a foreign body sensation in the throat and difficult swallowing. CLINICAL FINDINGS AND INVESTIGATIONS: Oral examination showed a smooth, non-tender, right-sided, soft palate mass. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a
