A Successful Nasal Support Device for a 4-Month-Old Baby With Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate: A Case Report.

Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital abnormalities affecting the craniofacial region. Cleft defect results in a broad nostril base and deviated lateral nasal cartilage causing a sunken dome and severe esthetic defect. This case represents an infant with unilateral cleft lip and palate reported at 4 months with an established feeding pattern negating the necessity for an obturator or Nasoalveolar molding. The lip-taping procedure was performed along with a nasal elevator of stainless steel wire framework with a hook-shaped unit padded with self-polymerizing acrylic resin. P

Effect of Prosthodontic Rehabilitation of Maxillary Defects on Hypernasality of Speech.

PURPOSE: To establish a correlation between the effective internal diameter of the maxillary defect, the resonating frequency, and the effectiveness of the definitive obturator in reducing the percentage nasality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine patients who underwent maxillectomy confined only to the hard palate (Aramany's class I and class II defect) and were wearing a definitive obturator for at least 3 months were included. The percentage nasality and resonating frequency were calculated with the help of Praat software. The patients were asked to read out a "Rainbow" passage and also t

Prosthetic Management of Hard Palate Perforation in a Child with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Palatal perforation is an uncommon complication seen in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia undergoing chemotherapy. This may impact basic functions, such as speech, swallowing, chewing, affecting the quality of life (QOL). Prosthetic rehabilitation of the palatal perforation with obturator can optimally restore function, thereby improving and enhancing the QOL of these patients.

Pleomorphic adenoma rehabilitative treatment in growing up patient: a 20-years follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: Although tumors of minor salivary glands are rare, the pleomorphic adenoma is the most common pathology among the benign neoplasm and can be found with high prevalence in the junction between hard palate and soft palate. Most of the maxillary tumors are surgically treated through either a total or partial maxillectomy. However, surgical defects lead to both clinical and psychologic disorders for the patient. A postoperative obturator prosthesis is a good option in patients who underwent maxillectomy. It allows to restore both masticatory and speaking functions, as well as aesthetic

Immediate and sustained changes in tongue movement with an experimental palatal "fistula": a case study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the immediate and longer-term effect(s) on tongue movement following the placement of an experimental opening through a palatal obturator (replicate of subject's prosthesis) worn by an adult male with an unrepaired cleft of the hard and soft palate. METHODS: Tongue movements associated with an anterior experimental opening of 20 mm(2) were examined under three conditions: a control condition in which the subject wore the experimental obturator completely occluded, a condition immediately after drilling the experimental openings through the obturator, and a condition af

Rehabilitation of an edentulous cleft lip and palate patient with a soft palate defect using a bar-retained, implant-supported speech-aid prosthesis: a clinical report.

Prosthetic rehabilitation of an edentulous cleft lip and palate patient with a combined hard and soft palate defect is a great challenge, due to the lack of retention of the obturator prosthesis as a result of its weight and the inability to obtain a border seal. Dental implants improve the retention, stability, and occlusal function of prostheses when used in carefully selected cleft lip and palate cases. This clinical report presents an edentulous unilateral cleft lip and palate patient who has hard and soft palate defects and an atrophied maxilla, treated with an implant-supported speech-ai

Rehabilitation using combined oral and maxillofacial prostheses: a case report.

This case report describes maxillofacial and palatal obturator rehabilitation after resection of head and neck cancer. A 71-year-old man sought prosthetic restoration of an extensive surgical defect that involved the right orbital floor, maxilla, and palate. The treatment plan involved fabrication of maxillofacial and palatal obturator prostheses that would be connected by magnets as well as a conventional total mandibular prosthesis. Intraoral and extraoral impressions were made with irreversible hydrocolloid, and stone casts were prepared. Test bases and wax rollers were made on the arch cas

[A primary clinical analysis of artificial bone implantation of cleft palate].

OBJECTIVE: To observe whether repairing the hard palate can improve velopharyngeal function. METHODS: 40 patients with hard palate cleft were randomly divided into two groups: the control group and the implantation group. Each group had 20 patients. The patients in the implantation group were implanted with compound artificial bone of HA--Bone cement. All patients hag been followed up for three months postoperatively. The patients in the repaired group were examined using computer tomography. All patients were examined using NPF. RESULTS: The implanted artificial bone had no rejection. The c

[Application of prosthetic replacement for bilateral maxillectomy defect].

A 59-year-old woman with large hard palate cancer underwent surgical resection. We constructed a maxillary prosthesis to be connected to the patient's mandibular denture. Bilateral maxillectomy resulted in total loss of the hard palate and bilateral alveolar and partial loss of the soft palate. A obturator prosthesis was prepared beforehand to fit the surgical cavity. The patient recovered functional speech and swallowing at a relatively early stage, achieving satisfactory cosmetic results.

Rhinorrhea induced by loading of dental implants supporting an obturator prosthesis: a clinical report.

This clinical report describes an unusual situation of nasal discharge that was initially considered to be caused by a leaking obturator prosthesis in a partially repaired cleft palate patient. Ultimately, the diagnosis was rhinorrhea induced by the loading of dental implants that supported the obturator. The differential diagnoses of nasal irritation, blocking of nasal drainage posterior or anterior through a premaxillary defect, vasomotor rhinitis, and gustatory rhinorrhea are presented and discussed, as well as the measures taken to reach the final diagnosis.

Rehabilitation of Maxillary Defect Using Zygomatic Implant Retained Obturator.

Tumors involving the hard palate, maxillary sinus, or nasal cavity require maxillectomy based on the extent of the lesion. Lack of these boundaries affects the speech, esthetics, and masticatory function. Prosthetic rehabilitation of these defects can be done utilizing zygomatic implants. This present case describes the use of a zygomatic implant to retain a maxillary obturator in a 22-year-old male patient following partial maxillectomy (Brown's Class 2b) due to odontogenic myxoma. A surgical obturator was secured in position subsequent to the implant placement. Following the healing period,

Masticatory performance in postmaxillectomy patients with edentulous maxillae fitted with obturator prostheses.

PURPOSE: Oral cancer develops frequently in older populations. In Japan, the incidence of oral and pharyngeal cancer is 9,201 per year, with such tumors accounting for 1.74% of all cancers. Although obturator prostheses play an important role in the rehabilitation of postmaxillectomy patients, clinicians sometimes experience difficulty in placing obturator prostheses in edentulous maxillae, and criteria for the objective evaluation of treatment outcome have yet to be established. The present study aimed to investigate postsurgical factors influencing the masticatory performance of postmaxillec

Reconstruction of the soft palate in oral cancer to repair an operative defect with speech aid prosthesis: a case report.

A soft palate defect may result from surgical resection, and its consequences could include hypernasal speech and nasal regurgitation of food and liquids. A speech aid prosthesis fabricated for patients can improve nasal emission during speech, and assist in preventing nasal regurgitation of food. This article presents a case of the reconstruction of a soft palate defect by prosthetic obturation.

Flexible feeding obturator for early intervention in infants with Pierre Robin sequence.

Pierre Robin sequence presents with distinct features of retrognathia and glossoptosis with or without cleft palate, which results in potentially serious, life-threatening respiratory obstruction and feeding complications. A multidisciplinary approach is required to manage such complex features. This article describes a novel technique for managing Pierre Robin sequence using a flexible feeding obturator. This custom-made intraoral appliance overcomes numerous problems associated with the available feeding obturators and helps infants and parents cope with a variety of difficulties.

Application of a temporary palatal prosthesis in a puppy suffering from cleft palate.

A 3-month-old Schnauzer was presented with congenital defects of the secondary palate. On the clinical examination, coughing, sneezing, drainage of nasal discharge from the external nares and poor growth were found. Vital signs and results of blood examination were within normal ranges. Thoracic radiography revealed mild pneumonia in the right lung lobes. In a puppy suffering from cleft palates, a palatal prosthesis was applied to the hard palate in order to protect the surgical wound, because a routine surgery was not successful. A palatal prosthesis was applied and held in place using the in

Four-rooted maxillary first molar having C-shaped palatal root canal morphology evaluated using cone-beam computerized tomography: a case report.

The aim of this article was to present an endodontically managed maxillary first molar with unusual C-shaped palatal root morphology confirmed by cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) images. CBCT axial images showed the presence of C-shaped palatal root canal anatomy with a palatal root bifurcation at the apical third. The evaluation of CBCT images can result in better understanding of root canal anatomy, which enables the clinician to investigate the root canal system and to clean, shape, and obturate it more effectively.

[Prosthetic treatment by pushing back part of the hard palate in third-degree cleft palate].

In the third degree of cleft palate, the palate bones are short, the cleft is wide, the degree of palatal tissue atrophy and the anterior displacement of the muscles are great. It is difficult to repair satisfactorily. We carried out a treatment plan by pushing the soft palate and posterior part of the palatal bone fully back to the physiological closure position by surgical means without cutting through the palatal aponeurosis. By using a palatal plate with pharyngeal prong immediately after operation to fix the composite flap posteriorly and restore the defect of the hard palate. The palatal
