BACKGROUND: Horner's syndrome (HS) classically consists of the symptom triad of miosis, ptosis, and anhidrosis. It is caused by impairment of a certain pathway in the sympathetic nervous system. It may also appear as part of the clinical signs of other diseases and syndromes, including Pancoast tumors, intradural and/or epidural tumors, thoracic outlet syndrome, syringomyelia, brachial plexus injury, and aortic dissection. Here, we report a very rare complication of vertebral column resection in children, and we present the clinical findings of a case of Horner's syndrome with a current litera

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdoid tumours usually develop in brain and spinal cord or kidney; they are highly malignant neoplasms that typically arise in infancy and early childhood. However, rare cases of pulmonary localization have been described, particularly among young adults.
CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old man, smoker, had a right apical lung mass associated with a Pancoast syndrome leading to haemoptysis. There was also a tumour of the left thigh and scalp. Histological samples taken at these three locations were in favour of an undifferentiated carcinoma. The lack of nuclear integrase interactor 1 e

A 36-year-old man developed progressive pain in the left thorax radiating to the shoulder, associated with weight loss as well as axillary and supraclavicular lymph-node swellings, and a left Horner's syndrome. The radiological diagnosis was Pancoast tumour. Computed tomography of the thorax revealed that the tumour had almost completely infiltrated the left lung and hilus. Sonography demonstrated metastases in the liver and retroperitoneum. Histological examination of an excised axillary lymph-node metastasis showed an undifferentiated small-cell tumour. Immunohistochemical tests revealed exp

A 62-year-old man underwent radiotherapy to the left upper chest for treatment of Pancoast syndrome on a background of previous coronary artery bypass grafting 12 years earlier. Within 1 year, he developed significant stenoses of both the left internal mammary artery (LIMA) graft and ostial left vertebral artery, presumably related to therapeutic radiation exposure. Initially diagnosed using computed tomography coronary angiography, the patient underwent percutaneous coronary intervention and insertion of a drug-eluting stent (DES) to the ostium of the LIMA graft via a left radial approach. He

Vertebral involvement is no longer a contraindication for resection in superior sulcus tumors. We describe the reconstruction of thoracic vertebras 2 to 4 using a free vascularized fibular graft combined with dorsal and ventral stabilization using rods, screws, and hooks after resection of a superior sulcus tumor that invaded the thoracic spine. No complications have occurred after 7 years of follow-up, and the reconstruction has been durable and stable.

The prognosis of bronchogenic carcinoma depends on its histology and the time of its first diagnosis. The 5-year-survival rate after radiation treatment is 3-10%. It is much better for tumors detected and operated in an early stage, averaging 21%. The roentgenomorphology of central and peripheral bronchogenic carcinoma and the differential diagnosis is demonstrated on a selected group of 300 patients seen in the "Klinik und Poliklinik für Radiologie" in Munich between 1975 and 1979. In conclusion we think it not justified to hesitate performing bronchoscopy and/or percutaneous needle aspiratio

Fifty-six patients with superior sulcus syndrome were evaluated at the First Surgical Department of the University of Padua between 1981 and 1990. Forty-two patients with the characteristic of Pancoast's tumor received preoperative irradiation and then en bloc resection of the tumor, chest wall, and adjacent structures. Seven lobectomies and 35 segmentectomies or wedge resections were performed. There was one early postoperative death. Median survival was 14 months, and actuarial survival was 25% at 5 years. Patients with pain relief had better 5-year survival (36.4%) than patients without pai

Intrathoracic involvement with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) was documented in eight patients with mycosis fungoides and two patients with Sĕzary syndrome. The radiographic findings consisted of multiple bilateral parenchymal nodular densities (five patients), patchy areas of consolidation (two patients), diffuse reticulonodular or interstitial infiltration (two patients), and pleural effusion without underlying parenchymal disease (one patient). Dyspnea on exertion and nonproductive cough were the most frequent presenting symptoms, and physical examination of the lungs was usually normal.

Superior sulcus tumours (or Pancoast tumours) are non-small-cell lung carcinomas presenting with specific symptoms and requiring a specific approach to treatment due to their location in the pulmonary apex. Early recognition is rare as a result of the low incidence and the relatively late occurrence of symptoms .Shoulder pain, with or without radiation to the ipsilateral arm or hand, and Horner's syndrome are often presenting symptoms. The current standard of care for patients with resectable tumours is pre-operative chemoradiotherapy, followed by resection of the tumour and affected surroundi

Allescheria boydii, a true fungus frequently isolated from soil, is best known as a causative agent of maduromycosis of the foot. In our report we describe two patients under treatment for acute leukemia who died from rapidly progressive A. boydii infections. One patient had signs of central nervous system infection and was found at autopsy to have had a large brain abscess. The second patient had a cavitary necrotizing pneumonia with thoracic inlet obstruction (Pancoast's syndrome) and failed to show improvement despite treatment with amphotericin B. The clinical spectrum of allescheriasis is

A number of locally defined as well as generalised diseases of the peripheral nervous system is manifested in the shoulderarm region besides lesions of individual nerves through traumas or as a result of pressure. Radicular syndromes are particularly frequent. These are based on prolapsed disks or degenerative changes of the cervical vertebral column. We must differentiate between these syndromes and the often rather unknown neuralgic amytrophy of the shoulder. Our experience has shown that in too many cases, paralysis of the plexus cervico-brachialis is assumed, although this occurs almost ex

This case illustrates the benefits of utilizing intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) for preventing injury to sensory/motor pathways of the spinal cord during a cordotomy procedure to relieve pain. Cordotomy has been used effectively in the treatment of visceral pain but comes with a high risk of damaging motor and sensory pathways due to close proximity of lesion. The subject is a 47-year-old female with a pancoast tumor of the left lung, left brachialplexopathy, and severe neuropathic pain syndrome, refractory to medical therapy. A palliative cordotomy procedure was elected fo

Incomplete clinical response or persistence of a rapid ESR despite corticosteroid treatment of polymyalgia rheumatica or temporal arteritis should always arouse suspicion and prompt a search for other diagnoses. Lumbar spinal stenosis and Pancoast's tumor are two unusual entities that can complicate or compete for the diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica and temporal arteritis.

BACKGROUND: The preferred treatment for locally aggressive lung cancers is triple modality therapy with concurrent and induction chemotherapy with radiation therapy followed by surgery. Patients with locally advanced T4 Pancoast tumors with spine involvement, without mediastinal N2 lymph node involvement and without distant metastases, are appropriate candidates for complete resection with subsequent spine reconstruction. This review addresses the questions of whether triple modality therapy with complete en bloc resection of locally advanced Pancoast tumors offers an advantage in terms of ove

A 62-year-old man was pointed out the superior sulcus tumor of the left lung invading to the subclavian artery and the vertebral artery. Bronchoscopic brushing cytology of the tumor showed Class V large cell carcinoma. The patient was diagnosed as clinical stage IIIA(cT4N0M0). After concurrent chemoradiotherapy, we performed left-upper lobectomy and reconstructions of left subclavian and vertebral arteries through modified transmanubrial approach. Surgeons of three different departments took part in the operation. Cooperative works were the key for the complete resection of such an advanced su

Computed tomography (CT) can be helpful in the preoperative evaluation of patients with a superior sulcus (Pancoast) tumor. The cross-sectional format and tissue resolution of CT better demonstrate the relationship of tumor to significant anterior structures (subclavian artery and vein, trachea, and esophagus) and posterior structures (chest wall and vertebral bodies) than do conventional techniques. Invasion of the subclavian vessels, mediastinum, or vertebral bodies contraindicates surgery.

When lasting pain occurs after surgery of head and neck cancer, tumoral recurrence should be considered. In addition to curative treatment, relief of pain is often provided by opioid analgesics. Doses vary according to tolerance and patient. Other than digestive routes of administration may be required. Here are two clinical reports: the first case with cervical epidural analgesia by ambulatory autoadministration device (Patient control analgesia), the other one with intrathecal in C7-T1 catheter with port access in which morphine was injected every 24 hours resulting in efficient analgesia, i
