Endogenous panophthalmitis in a patient with COVID-19 during hospitalization in an intensive care unit: A case report.

PURPOSE: To report a case of endogenous panophthalmitis in a patient with COVID-19 during treatment in an Intensive Care Unit. OBSERVATION: A 64-year-old woman with COVID-19 and Salmonella septicemia presented with decreased visual acuity, ocular pain, and proptosis in her right eye after treatment with favipiravir, intravenous dexamethasone, and ceftriaxone. An ocular examination of her right eye revealed periorbital tenderness, exophthalmos, and corneal haze. The ultrasonography showed a subretinal abscess. Her right eye lost light perception vision and underwent enucleation. Microbiologic

Clostridial panophthalmitis - An unusual case of localised malignant oedema in Merino lambs associated with Clostridium chauvoei.

The authors report an unusual case of Clostridium chauvoei causing severe panophthalmitis in Merino lambs. More than half of the lambs affected survived, which is unusual for clostridial disease; however, there have been reports in humans that the mortality risk for ocular gas gangrene is lower than when other body parts are affected. A combination of factors in this case included environmental contamination (specific to a particular paddock), genetics predisposing to entropion (lambs born of maiden 2-year-old ewes with some inbreeding), the practice of manually everting eyelids for the entrop

ESBL E. coli Urosepsis Resulting in Endogenous Panophthalmitis Requiring Evisceration of the Eye in a Diabetic Patient.

A primary infection in a remote site resulting in vision threatening complications like panophthalmitis in a person who is not immune-compromised is rare. We report a case of endogenous bilateral bacterial endophthalmitis progressing into panophthalmitis in one eye requiring evisceration of that eye. A patient admitted with severe ESBL E. coli urosepsis was effectively treated with source control (bilateral DJ stenting for hydroureteronephrosis) and antibiotics. She was found to have features suggestive of bilateral conjunctivitis which progressed to panophthalmitis possibly due to delay in ap

A Rare Case of Streptococcus dysgalactiae Panophthalmitis and Concurrent Septic Arthritis from Hematogenous Spread: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Panophthalmitis is a severe ocular infection with significant morbidity, most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae. Streptococcus dysgalactiae is a rare cause of panophthalmitis, and its involvement in concurrent systemic infections is exceedingly uncommon. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of S. dysgalactiae panophthalmitis in an elderly male patient, associated with bacteremia and septic arthritis. Despite early antimicrobial therapy, the infection progressed rapidly, ultimately requiring evisceration of the affected eye. CONCLUSION: This cas

Occult Colon Adenocarcinoma and Multiple Myeloma Associated With Clostridium septicum Panophthalmitis With Orbital and Chiasmal Extension: A Case Report.

A previously healthy 62-year-old African American female presented with a fulminant orbital cellulitis of the right eye with diffuse scleritis and orbital inflammation extending to the optic chiasm on neuroimaging. She was taken for an emergent orbitotomy with an orbital fat biopsy and started on broad-spectrum intravenous (IV) and topical antibiotics. Within 36 hours of presentation, scleral thinning and a corneal melt ensued, ending in enucleation. Intraoperative cultures were positive for Clostridium septicum, leading to a systemic work-up exposing a previously undiagnosed colon adenocarcin

Mapping prognostic factors for globe survival in panophthalmitis using logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard models: A retrospective study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to report the outcomes of panophthalmitis and to identify factors significantly affecting globe survival in the disease. METHODS: This was a retrospective study on patients with panophthalmitis in a tertiary hospital between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2019. The demographics, treatment details, culture results, and final outcomes were recorded. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards (CPH) were calculated to identify variables associated with globe loss. A P < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Eighty-five eyes of 85 patients (31 cultu

A rare case of concomitant Klebsiella pneumonia and panophthalmitis in a poorly controlled diabetic patient: the first case report from Syria.

UNLABELLED: Diabetes mellitus is the most common endocrine metabolic disease. Uncontrolled diabetes affects almost all components of immunity. Diabetes mellitus patients have an increased susceptibility to infections which aggravates in the cases of uncontrolled hyperglycemia. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors present the case of a 63-year-old female patient with a history of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. She went to the ambulance complaining of fever, poor appetite, dyspnea, cough, fatigue, and asthenia. The chest computed tomography showed the presence of bilateral ovoid infiltration dens

Actinomyces sp. detected by next-generation sequencing in paraffin-embedded, formalin-fixed tissues of a dog with severe panophthalmitis and periocular cellulitis.

A 9-mo-old, castrated male Saint Bernard dog was presented for evaluation of periorbital swelling, severe uveitis, and secondary glaucoma. Concurrently, chest radiographs had evidence of pneumonia. Enucleation was performed after failure of aggressive medical management. Histopathology of the globe confirmed severe necrosuppurative panophthalmitis and periocular cellulitis with myriad intra- and extracellular bacteria forming long filamentous chains. The bacteria were gram-positive and GMS-positive but acid-fast-negative. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed on formalin-fixed, paraff

Ocular melanoma presenting as a case of panophthalmitis in a 78-year-old Nigerian woman (masquerade syndrome): an uncommon finding in Benin City, Nigeria.

Theodore states that the term 'masquerade syndrome' first appeared in the ophthalmic literature in 1967 to describe a conjunctival carcinoma that presented as chronic conjunctivitis. Since then, the masquerade syndrome label has been applied to a group of disorders that mimic ocular inflammatory disease. Although some benign conditions can be considered masquerade syndromes, most often the term refers to malignant entities. Tsai and O'Brien also report that ocular oncology, the subspecialty that concerns itself with ocular and orbital malignancies, is by nature a field of uncommon disorders. A

Panophthalmitis secondary to retained intraocular foreign body amidst a national lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic: A case series and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) can be serious as they may result in vision-threatening ocular inflammations and even loss of the eye. Delay in presentation or treatment by more than 24 hours from the time of injury results in a poor prognosis. In penetrating wounds, microorganisms enter the eye through penetrating objects. Both bacterial and fungal organisms are responsible for causing panophthalmitis. At the ocular level, these microorganisms produce irreversible damage which includes keratitis, uveitis, hypopyon, vitreous abscesses, retinal necrosis, detachment, and, finall

Uveal tuberculosis.

Ocular tuberculosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of panophthalmitis, uveitis, and intraocular neoplasms. We have presented 6 cases illustrating some of the clinical and pathological characteristics of two types of ocular involvement, acute tuberculous panophthalmitis and ciliary body tuberculoma. The former should be entertained when panophthalmitis or uveitis occur in debilitated patients with obvious systemic tuberculosis foci. Ciliary body tuberculoma should be suspected in relatively healthy individuals with a history of tuberculosis and an intraocular mass. The diagn
