Coprology of Panthera tigris altaica and Felis bengalensis euptilurus from the Russian Far East.

Fecal samples from the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) and the Amur cat (Felis bengalensis euptilurus) from Far Eastern Russia, were examined for parasites. A natural sedimentation methodology was used and a complete examination of all the sediment was performed. This fecal investigation allowed us to isolate and identify several developmental stages of gastrointestinal, hepatic, and respiratory parasites. Five parasites were found from P. t. altaica: 11 trematodes (Platynosomum fastosum) and 4 nematodes (Strongyloides sp., Ancylostomatidae, Toxascaris leonina, and Toxocara cati). Fiv

Prevalence of Bartonella infection in wild African lions (Panthera leo) and cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus).

Bartonella species are emerging pathogens that have been isolated worldwide from humans and other mammals. Our objective was to estimate the prevalence of Bartonella infection in free-ranging African lions (Panthera leo) and cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus). Blood and/or serum samples were collected from a convenience sample of 113 lions and 74 cheetahs captured in Africa between 1982 and 2002. Whole blood samples available from 58 of the lions and 17 of the cheetahs were cultured for evidence of Bartonella spp., and whole blood from 54 of the 58 lions and 73 of the 74 cheetahs tested for the prese

[Multiple ocular coloboma (MOC) with persistent pupillary membrane in the snow leopard (Panthera uncia)].

In a litter of three snow leopards, bilateral colobomata of the upper temporal eyelids, bilateral persistent pupillary membranes and a unilateral coloboma of the optic nerve entrance are described as "Multiple Ocular Colobomata" (MOC). The causal pathogenesis of each of the colobomata is discussed comparatively. The colobomata of the eyelids, essential feature of the MOC syndrome in snow leopards, are most probably not of hereditary, but rather of intrauterine infectious viral origin.

Death by lion (Panthera leo): injury patterns and forensic perspectives of large feline attacks.

Fatalities resulting from large felid attacks represent a rare subset of injuries in autopsy practice and are rarely documented in the medico-legal literature. Here, we present the case of a 67-year-old man who was fatally injured and extensively devoured by a captive African lion. An autopsy revealed multiple vital bite wounds to the head and neck with severance of the major neck vessels and the cervical spine. In addition, there was extensive postmortem damage, with defleshing injuries and bite marks to the lower extremities and multiple claw marks to the abdomen and back. The vitality of th

ACUTE NONCOMPRESSIVE NUCLEUS PULPOSUS EXTRUSION CAUSING PARAPLEGIA IN A SIBERIAN TIGER ( PANTHERA TIGRIS ALTAICA).

A neutered male Siberian tiger ( Panthera tigris altaica) presented with paraplegia of 5 days' duration. Thoracolumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a focal, linear T2-W hyperintense intramedullary lesion at the level of T10-11 as well as reduced size of the nucleus pulposus of the T10-11 intervertebral disc. The animal was humanely euthanatized as a result of the severity of clinical signs and the poor prognosis. Gross necropsy revealed a dark red, firm focus on the spinal cord at the level of the T11 nerve roots. Histopathology revealed liquefactive necrosis of the ventral spinal

Diagnosis of suspected hypovitaminosis A using magnetic resonance imaging in African lions (Panthera leo).

Vitamin A deficiency is described in captive lions. Ante mortem diagnosis can either be made by serum analysis or liver biopsy, both of which may be problematic. This study utilised magnetic resonance imaging to identify vitamin A deficiency in lions with relatively mild clinical signs, which could otherwise be attributed to numerous other neurological conditions. Magnetic resonance imaging is a non-invasive, reliable diagnostic tool to demonstrate pathology typically associated with this condition. To accommodate varying lion ages and sizes, a number of cranium and brain measurements were com

Pathogenesis of two strains of lion (Panthera leo) morbillivirus in ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

Canine distemper virus (CDV) was previously considered to have a host range restricted to the canid family. In 1994, the virus was associated with sporadic outbreaks of distemper in captive felids. However, after severe mortality occurred in the Serengeti lions (Panthera leo), attention became focused on the pathogenesis of the virus and a concerted effort was made to identify the virus as CDV or a closely related feline morbillivirus. The present study was designed to explore the susceptibility of ferrets to challenge with two morbilliviruses isolated from lions and the protective effects of

Diagnosis and surgical treatment of a Chiari I-like malformation in an African lion (Panthera leo).

A 13-mo-old intact male African lion (Panthera leo) presented with a 3-mo history of lethargy, ventral flexion of the neck, abnormal vocalization, and ataxia. Hemogram and serum biochemistries were within normal limits except for the presence of hypokalemia (2.7 mEq/L) and hypochloridemia (108 mEq/L). When no improvement was noted with oral potassium gluconate supplementation, a computed tomography scan of the brain and skull was performed, and no abnormalities were noted. However, magnetic resonance imaging detected occipital bone thickening, crowding of the caudal cranial fossa with cerebell

Some important parasitic and other diseases of lion, Panthera leo, in the Kruger National Park.

Lions in the Kruger Park have been found affected by a variety of parasitic and other disease conditions, including trichinosis, filariasis, sarcoptic mange, pentastomiasis, echinococcosis, taeniasis, hepatozoonosis, anthrax, babesiosis and rickets. Six of these may be directly or indirectly transmissible to man or are, at least, closely related to human parasites or disease. Nine of these diseases, or closely related conditions, are also known to infect domestic animal species. The opposite may, of course, also be true--man and his domestic animals may, under certain circumstances, transmit c

DENTAL AND ORAL PATHOLOGY IN TIGERS (PANTHERA TIGRIS) BASED ON ORAL EXAMINATION AND COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY.

Management of dental disease in non-domestic felids under managed care is integral to their overall health and welfare. Accurate evaluation of dental disease by zoo clinicians improves patient care and can influence the decision to utilize dental specialists to assist with complex procedures. Additionally, dental disease frequently occurs subgingivally and cannot be detected without the aid of dental radiography and/or advanced imaging, such as CT. This study aimed to describe the frequency and types of dental pathology observed in a cohort of 15 tigers (Panthera tigris) from a sanctuary, dete

The effects of frequent electroejaculation on the semen characteristics of a captive Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).

Artificial insemination (AI) can help to avoid inbreeding and genetic degeneration for sustaining genetically healthy populations of endangered species in captivity. Collection of a sufficient quantity of viable sperm is an essential first step in the AI process. In the present study, we examined the effects of frequent electroejaculation on semen characteristics in a Siberian tiger. We collected semen in all 17 trials during 6 breeding seasons (6 years). The mean number of sperm and the percentage of motile sperm were 294.3 ± 250.2 × 10⁶/ejaculate and 82.4 ± 11.4%, respectively. The number of

Medical and surgical management of a dystocia because of foetopelvic disproportion in an African lioness (Panthera leo).

Medical and surgical management of a foetopelvic dystocia in an African lioness (Panthera leo) and the post-operative complications are reported. A caesarean section was performed to extract an oversize foetus blocked at the cervical canal; the lioness died 36 h after surgery. At necropsy, an abdominal effusion with sero-haemorrhagic fluid was observed, along with a fibrinopurulent exudate adhered to the serosal surfaces of the pelvic and abdominal cavities. In addition, the pelvic symphysis was not cartilaginous, but formed a firm and rigid joint between the pubis and ischium of each hip. The

Identification of ticks from conflict Sumatran tigers ( Panthera tigris sumatrae ) in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases transmitted by ticks pose risks to both wildlife and humans. In Indonesia, tick-borne infections are rarely considered in differential diagnoses of febrile illnesses such as dengue and malaria, leading to potential underdiagnosis. Wildlife-human conflict, including cases of Sumatran tigers entering residential areas, may facilitate pathogen spillover at the human-animal interface. AIM: This study aimed to identify and characterize molecular features of tick-borne pathogens associated with conflict-affected wildlife using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplif
