Pantoea Natural Product 3 is encoded by an eight-gene biosynthetic gene cluster and exhibits antimicrobial activity against multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa continue to pose a serious health threat worldwide. Two Pantoea agglomerans strains, 3581 and SN01080, produce an antibiotic effective against these pathogens. To identify the antibiotic biosynthetic gene clusters, independent genetic screens were conducted for each strain using a mini-Tn5 transposon, which resulted in the identification of the same conserved eight-gene cluster. We have named this antibiotic Pantoea Natural Product 3 (PNP-3). The PNP-3 biosynthetic cluster is composed of genes encoding two Major Facilitato

Global meta-analysis of drought associated rice rhizosphere microbiome data and soil application of selected bacteria reveals potential of Pantoea dispersa for drought stress alleviation in rice plants.

INTRODUCTION: Drought stress poses a significant threat to global rice productivity, jeopardizing crop yield and food security, particularly in water-limited agroecosystems. The application of plant-associated microbes to enhance drought resilience in crops has gained considerable attention in recent years. However, systematic investigation on changes in rice rhizosphere microbial diversity under drought stress remains limited. This study aimed to identify drought-responsive bacterial taxa and evaluate selected rice rhizosphere bacteria for their potential to enhance drought tolerance in rice.

Oral administration of Pantoea agglomerans-derived lipopolysaccharide prevents metabolic dysfunction and Alzheimer's disease-related memory loss in senescence-accelerated prone 8 (SAMP8) mice fed a high-fat diet.

The pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains unclear, but an imbalance between the production and clearance of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides is known to play a critical role in AD progression. A promising preventative approach is to enhance the normal Aβ clearance activity of brain phagocytes such as microglia. In mice, the intraperitoneal injection of Toll-like receptor 4 agonist was shown to enhance Aβ clearance and exhibit a preventative effect on AD-related pathology. Our previous clinical study demonstrated that orally administered Pantoea agglomerans-derived lipopolysaccharide (LPSp) e

A Rare Organism Causing Cholecystitis With Bacteremia in a Breast Cancer Patient.

Pantoea, a gram-negative, rod-shaped, anaerobic bacterium, is a rare cause of human disease. Pantoea species have been known to mostly cause pulmonary disease in agricultural workers as they are native to select crops and wild animal furs. However, in very few documented cases, Pantoea has been discovered as the source of nosocomial infections, usually in the setting of an immunocompromised host. This case report details the clinical course of a 62-year-old immunocompromised female with stage 3 breast cancer presenting with acute cholecystitis and bacteremia and the unexpected discovery of Pan

Tryptophanase disruption promotes insect-bacterium mutualism.

Animal-microorganism symbioses are omnipresent, with both partners often gaining benefits as mutualists. A single mutation in the carbon catabolite repression system in Escherichia coli enables mutualism with the stinkbug Plautia stali. Here we find that this mutation is not present in natural symbioses. Given that the carbon catabolite repression pathway affects the expression of >500 downstream genes, we investigated their role in mutualisms. We find that disruption of a single gene, tnaA, encoding tryptophanase makes E. coli mutualistic to P. stali, resulting in the accumulation of tryptoph

Dry stress and survival time of Enterobacter sakazakii and other Enterobacteriaceae in dehydrated powdered infant formula.

Powdered infant formula is not a sterile product, and opportunistic pathogens could multiply in the reconstituted product, resulting in neonatal infections. In this study, the generation of sublethally injured Enterobacteriaceae during desiccation and their persistence in dehydrated powdered infant formula was assessed during a 2.5-year period. The study included 27 strains of Enterobacter sakazakii, Enterobacter cloacae, Salmonella Enteritidis, Citrobacter koseri, Citrobacter freundii, Escherichia coli, Escherichia vulneris, Pantoea spp., Klebsiella oxytoca, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Homeostasis as regulated by activated macrophage. III. Protective effect of LPSw (lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of wheat flour) on gastric ulcer in mice as compared with those of other LPS from various sources.

Protective effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from various sources on gastric ulcer has been examined in mice using parenteral as well as oral route. Ulcer is induced by indomethacin, stress or alcohol. LPS was prepared from 6 species of bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pantoea agglomerans, Serratia ficaria, Enterobacter cloacae, Bordetella pertussis, Alcaligenes faecalis) and from wheat flour. When administered intravenously, LPS of Pantoea agglomerans was the most effective among other LPS examined. Lipopolysaccharide of wheat flour (LPSw) showed a significantly protective effect by the oral rout

Assessment of the Sensitivity of Foodborne Cronobacter spp. Strains and Other Enterobacteria to Temperature Stresses and Chlorine-Containing Biocides.

We examined the effects of elevated temperatures and biocides on survivability of food isolates of Cronobacter spp. (C. sakazakii) and concomitant enterobacteriaceae obtained in microbiological control of infant nutrition products. Increased resistance of certain strains of Cronobacter, Enterobacter cloacae, and Pantoea spp. to thermal processing was revealed. Salmonella, Pantoea, and Cronobacter bacteria were least sensitive to antimicrobial action of chlorine-containing agents. The above properties varied in the strains of the same species. Specifically, only two of three examined isolates o

Cardiac disease in the Spix Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii): two cases.

Cardiovascular disease in avian species, other than poultry, is being increasingly reported. In psittacine birds, atherosclerosis and congestive heart failure are the leading cardiovascular diseases, often resulting in multiorgan dysfunction and demise. The Spix's macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii) is arguably the most endangered psittacine species worldwide. We aimed to describe the gross and microscopic findings in two adult Spix's macaws wherein severe cardiovascular pathology resulted in sudden death. Bird 1 had pathologic findings consistent with fibrinoheterophilic vegetative pulmonic valvular e

Attraction to secreted isoamyl alcohol as a signal for beneficial commensals.

C. elegans, a bacterivore living in microbially-complex environments, harbors a characteristic community of gut bacteria that contribute to its health and fitness. What determines which environmental bacteria end up as commensals is largely unknown in C. elegans , as in other animals. Previous work found that gut Pantoea isolates supported rapid worm development and infection resistance, while environmental congenerics were inferior. Notably, worms were preferentially attracted to the more beneficial gut isolates. Using bioactivity-guided fractionation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Genomic Characterization of Bacterial Isolates from Aerobic Fermentation of Oolong Tea Dregs: Antimicrobial Resistance, Virulence, and Lignocellulose-Degrading Potential.

The global tea industry generates millions of tons of waste annually, yet the bacteria capable of degrading this recalcitrant biomass remain poorly characterized. This study performed whole-genome sequencing and comparative genomic analysis of six bacterial strains isolated from oolong tea residue fermentation: Bacillus sp., Paenibacillus sp., Pantoea sp., two Pseudomonas isolates, and Stenotrophomonas sp. Genome sizes ranged from 3.61 to 6.33 Mbp, with GC content from 43.2% to 66.5%. Average nucleotide identity (ANI) analysis confirmed species-level identification for Paenibacillus (ANI > 95%

Molecular and biochemical characterization of three bacterial symbionts of fruit fly, Bactrocera tau (Tephritidae: Diptera).

Characterization of three bacterial symbionts (BC1, BC2 and BC3) of fruit fly Bactrocera tau including morphological, biochemical and 16S rDNA (rrs gene) analysis was done to determine their taxonomic position. Morphological and biochemical characterization placed two bacteria (BC1, Klebsiella oxytoca and BC2, Pantoea agglomerans) into family Enterobacteriaceae and the third one (BC3, Staphylococcus sp.) into family Staphylococcaceae. 16S rDNA gene sequence comparison with the available NCBI database sequences further confirmed the characterizations of bacterial symbionts. Case report: subacute synovitis of the knee after a rose thorn injury: unusual clinical picture.

Synovitis secondary to penetrating plant thorn injuries is not frequently reported. Historically, it is considered aseptic and treated with removal of the intraarticular foreign body and affected synovial lining. We report a 57-year-old healthy man who was admitted 2 weeks after being injured by a rose (Rosacea) thorn with subacute and mild synovitis with effusion of his right knee. No intraarticular foreign body was retained. Pantoea agglomerans was identified in the synovial fluid. Contrary to former teaching, effusions from joints violated by thorns should not be presumed sterile. Bacterial

Symbiotic Escherichia coli strains can better colonize host stinkbugs and outcompete natural symbiotic bacteria, but confer less fitness benefit.

The stinkbug Plautia stali harbors essential gut symbiotic bacteria of the genus Pantoea, whose natural strains differ in cultivability and host benefits. Using this system, we evaluated how laboratory-evolved and genetically engineered symbiotic Escherichia coli strains compete against native Pantoea symbionts and how they influence host fitness. In single infection assays, the native uncultivable symbiont Sym A conferred the highest host performance, whereas the evolved (CmL05G13) and artificial (ΔcyaA) symbiotic E. coli strains supported host survival at levels comparable to cultivable Pant

Individual differences in boldness influence patterns of social interactions and the transmission of cuticular bacteria among group-mates.

Despite the importance of host attributes for the likelihood of associated microbial transmission, individual variation is seldom considered in studies of wildlife disease. Here, we test the influence of host phenotypes on social network structure and the likelihood of cuticular bacterial transmission from exposed individuals to susceptible group-mates using female social spiders (Stegodyphus dumicola). Based on the interactions of resting individuals of known behavioural types, we assessed whether individuals assorted according to their behavioural traits. We found that individuals preferenti

Characterization of Culturable Plant Growth-promoting Bacteria Isolated from Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. Roots.

Amaranths plants grow under several abiotic stress conditions and produce high-quality edible seeds. Despite their high agronomic and nutritional potential, their endophytic bacteria have not yet been characterized. This study aimed to isolate Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. root endophytes and characterize their plant growth-promoting capacity. Twenty-six amaranth root putative diazotrophs were isolated and identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Most of the isolated strains exhibited multiple plant growth-promoting traits, such as iron and phosphate solubilization and the capacity to form biof

The phylogenetic position of Serratia, Buttiauxella and some other genera of the family Enterobacteriaceae.

The phylogenetic relationships of the type strains of 38 species from 15 genera of the family Enterobacteriaceae were investigated by comparative 16S rDNA analysis. Several sequences of strains from the genera Citrobacter, Erwinia, Pantoea, Proteus, Rahnella and Serratia, analysed in this study, have been analysed previously. However, as the sequences of this study differ slightly from the published ones, they were included in the analysis. Of the 23 enterobacterial genera included in an overview dendrogram of relatedness, members of the genera Xenorhabdus, Photorhabdus, Proteus and Plesiomona

Habitat visualization, acquisition features and necessity of the gammaproteobacterial symbiont of pistachio stink Bug, Acrosternum heegeri (Hem.: Pentatomidae).

Plant-sucking stinkbugs are especially associated with mutualistic gut bacterial symbionts. Here, we explored the symbiotic relationship of a pistachio stinkbug, Acrosternum heegeri Fieber by histological, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), real-time PCR and molecular phylogenetic techniques. Furthermore, the effects of the symbiont on the resting/wandering behaviors of the newborn nymphs, pre-adult survival rates, and stage compositions were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy and real-time PCR analyses showed that a rod-shaped gammaproteobacterium was persistently located

Monitoring the Occurrence and Distribution of Stewart's Wilt of Maize in Iran.

Stewart's wilt of maize, caused by the gram-negative bacterium Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii, is one of the economically important diseases of the crop around the globe. The disease has not yet been reported in Iran. Following preliminary observation of suspected symptoms on maize plants in Southeastern Iran in 2019, a 4-year comprehensive field survey and sampling program was initiated across maize-growing areas in the country to monitor the occurrence and distribution of the disease. During 2019 to 2022, 180 maize fields were surveyed, from which 400 symptomatic and asymptomatic maize s

Quantum Light Imaging of the Plant Root─Rhizobacteria─System Using iLOV Fluorescence.

It has been demonstrated recently that the use of specific quantum states of light for two-photon microscopy can lead to a substantial reduction of the intensity of light needed for the imaging of biological objects. This opens new ways to better understand the delicate mechanisms of the interactions of living organisms in the rhizosphere on an extended time scale without optical damage or alteration of their native behavior. Herein, we report a successful realization of entangled two-photon excited fluorescence microscopy of wheat plant roots and a set of biological samples, including purifie
