New insights in Cercopithecinae spermatozoa.

Sperm morphometric and morphologic data have been shown to represent useful tools for monitoring fertility, improving assisted reproduction techniques and conservation of genetic material as well as detecting inbreeding of endangered primates. We provide here for the first time sperm morphologic and morphometric data from Cercopithecus neglectus, Cercopithecus cephus, Papio papio and critically endangered Cercopithecus roloway, as well as comparative data from other Cercopithecinae species, i.e. Allochrocebus lhoesti, Mandrillus sphinx and Papio anubis. Following collection from the epididymis

Utilizing non-human primate models to combat recent COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 and viral infectious disease outbreaks.

In recent times, global viral outbreaks and diseases, such as COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2), Zika (ZIKV), monkeypox (MPOX), Ebola (EBOV), and Marburg (MARV), have been extensively documented. Swiftly deciphering the mechanisms underlying disease pathogenesis and devising vaccines or therapeutic interventions to curtail these outbreaks stand as paramount imperatives. Amidst these endeavors, animal models emerge as pivotal tools. Among these models, non-human primates (NHPs) hold a position of particular importance. Their proximity in evolutionary lineage and physiological resemblances to humans render

Sero-epizootiologic survey of Trypanosoma brucei in Kenyan nonhuman primates.

Blood samples were collected from 121 individuals of three species of wild-caught nonhuman primates from Kenya, including African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops), Syke's monkeys (C. mitis), and olive baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis), and were examined for circulating Trypanosoma brucei and for T. brucei antigen and anti-trypanosome antibody. Indirect antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay detected titers of anti-T. brucei antibodies in 13 of the primates sampled, and field-oriented latex agglutination test detected invariant T. brucei antigens in 10 (8.3%) of the primates. Leishmania aethiopica: experimental infections in non-human primates.

Six Cercopithecus aethiops monkeys, 4 Theropithecus gelada baboons and 2 Papio anubis baboons were infected using Leishmania aethiopica isolates originating either from localized (LCL) or diffuse (DCL) cutaneous leishmaniasis patients. The history of lesions in 4 C. aethiops monkeys infected by LCL strains mimicked the process in human LCL patients. Infection of 2 C. aethiops monkeys using a DCL strain resulted in localized, non-ulcerative, self-healing nodular lesions. Such lesions were also observed in 2 T. gelada baboons infected by LCL strains. Active lesions and healing in C. aethiops and

Schistosoma mansoni and soil transmtted helminths in olive baboons and potential zoonosis.

Zoonotic pathogens are among the most important causes of ill health all over the world. The presence of these pathogens in free ranging baboons may have significant implications for humans. In Kenya, the encroachment of wildlife habitats has led to increased interaction between humans and wildlife especially non-human primates. The current study therefore aimed at investigating any possible zoonotic gastrointestinal helminths of olive baboons (Papio anubis) at the human-wildlife interface in two park borders and a ranch in Kenya, namely, Tsavo West National Park, Tana River Primate Reserve an

Loa loa: experimental infection in two species of African primates.

Four species of primates, baboon (Papio anubis), patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas), green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) and chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) were inoculated with third-stage larvae of a human strain of Loa loa from Cameroon, West African. The baboon and patas monkeys developed patent infections after 135 to 148 days; the green monkeys and chimpanzee did not. In each animal which became patent, microfilaremia rose rapidly to high levels. In the baboon, but not in the patas monkeys, there was a suppression of microfilaremia during the 4th month of patency. After splenectomy, micro

Variation in Craniodental Pathologies Among Cercopithecoid Primates.

Pathologies of the skull and teeth are well documented for many human populations, but there are fewer studies of other primates. We contrast lesion prevalence and patterning among cercopithecoid primates and map variation onto socioecological variables. We compare craniodental lesions in six species: Nasalis larvatus (n = 54), Colobus polykomos (n = 64), Cercopithecus mitis (n = 65), Macaca fascicularis (n = 109), Theropithecus gelada (n = 13), and Papio anubis (n = 76). One of us (C.A.K.) evaluated each adult skull for multiple lesion types using standard criteria. We also tested for a relat

Prevalence of Babesia microti in free-ranging baboons and African green monkeys.

Babesia microti-like parasites have been reported to infect captive non-human primates (NHPs). However, studies on the prevalence of Babesia spp. in free-ranging NHPs are lacking. This investigation aimed at determining the prevalence of B. microti in wild-caught Kenyan NHPs. In total, 125 animals were studied, including 65 olive baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) and 60 African green monkeys ([AGMs] Chlorocebus aethiops). Nested polymerase chain reaction targeting Babesia β-tubulin genes was used to diagnose infection prevalence. Results indicated a prevalence of 22% (27/125) B. microti infe

Oxytocin decreases alcohol self-administration in male baboons.

The neurohormone oxytocin (OT) has been proposed as a treatment for alcohol and nicotine use disorders. The aim of the present study was to examine whether intravenous (IV) OT decreases alcohol oral self-administration and consumption in nonhuman primates under a 6-h alcohol access procedure as well as alcohol and nicotine (IV) self-administration under 6-h concurrent access conditions. The subjects were five male baboons (Papio anubis) that self-administered oral alcohol (4% w/v) during 6-h sessions under a fixed ratio 3 (FR3) schedule per drink. Baseline levels of alcohol self-administration

[Data on intestinal parasites of lower monkeys in the Adler apery].

Under captive conditions, a parasite fauna connected with the changes in ecological conditions, feeding, and mode of life is usually formed in monkeys. Species composition of the intestinal parasites has been investigated in six species of the monkeys (Macaca mulatta, M. fascicularis, M. nemestrina, Ceropithecus aethiops, Papio hamadryas, and P. anubis), which were born in the Adler apery and live there for a long time. A comparison with similar investigations carried out in the Sukhumi apery, where the climatic and keeping conditions are practically identical with those in the Adler apery, wa

Evidence for genetically-based sperm discrimination in the vaginal tract of a primate species.

Females influence offspring paternity through diverse pre- and post-copulatory mechanisms. Sperm discrimination-the differential physiological response to ejaculates based on male or sperm characteristics-can bias fertilization outcomes, but in vivo evidence of this process in large-bodied mammals is lacking. Here, in a study of nine females and four males, we tested whether two aspects of female physiology that affect sperm survival-vaginal immune response and pH-are modulated by male genetic makeup in a non-human primate, the olive baboon (Papio anubis). Our findings suggest post-copulatory

Treponema infection associated with genital ulceration in wild baboons.

The authors describe genital alterations and detailed histologic findings in baboons naturally infected with Treponema pallidum. The disease causes moderate to severe genital ulcerations in a population of olive baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis) at Lake Manyara National Park in Tanzania. In a field survey in 2007, 63 individuals of all age classes, both sexes, and different grades of infection were chemically immobilized and sampled. Histology and molecular biological tests were used to detect and identify the organism responsible: a strain similar to T pallidum ssp pertenue, the cause of yaws

Functional correlates of the position of the axis of rotation of the mandible during chewing in non-human primates.

The location of the axis of rotation (AoR) of the mandible was quantified using the helical axis (HA) in eight individuals from three species of non-human primates: Papio anubis, Cebus apella, and Macaca mulatta. These data were used to test three hypotheses regarding the functional significance of anteroposterior condylar translation - an AoR located inferior to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) - during chewing: minimizing impingement of the gonial region on cervical soft tissue structures during jaw opening; avoiding stretching of the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle (IANB); and incre

Whole-genome sequencing reveals evidence for inter-species transmission of the yaws bacterium among nonhuman primates in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue (TPE) is the causative agent of human and nonhuman primate (NHP) yaws infection. The discovery of yaws bacterium in wild populations of NHPs opened the question of transmission mechanisms within NHPs, and this work aims to take a closer look at the transmission of the disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Our study determined eleven whole TPE genomes from NHP isolates collected from three national parks in Tanzania: Lake Manyara National Park (NP), Serengeti NP, and Ruaha NP. The bacteria were isolated from four species of NHPs: Chlorocebu

Effect of menstrual cycle phase and hormonal treatments on evaluation of tubal patency in baboons.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated whether menstrual cycle phase influences the assessment of tubal patency by hysterosalpingography (HSG) in baboons. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of baseline tubal patency studies and serum estradiol (E2 ) and progesterone (P4) values obtained from female baboons used as models for development of non-surgical permanent contraception in women. The main outcome measure was bilateral tubal patency (BTP) in relationship with estradiol level. RESULTS: Female baboons (n = 110) underwent a single (n = 81), two (n = 26), or three (n = 3) HSG examinations. In 33/142 (23%) H

The baboon as a research model for the study of endometrial biology, uterine receptivity and embryo implantation.

The process of embryo implantation includes attachment of the embryo to the endometrium and penetration through the epithelial layer, decidualization of the basement membrane, invasion of the uterine stroma and access to blood supply. This implantation process is very different in humans when compared to pigs, cattle or rodents. The process of invasion in humans where the embryo gets embedded in decidual tissue and in spiral arteries is more aggressive, but otherwise similar to the process of implantation and invasion in non-human primates such as rhesus monkeys and baboons. For ethical reason

Apnea induction for invasive lung function testing in infant olive baboons: Comparison of intravenous propofol versus hyperventilation.

BACKGROUND: In various types of pulmonary research, pulmonary function testing (PFT) is performed to quantify the severity of lung disease. Induction of apnea and positive pressure ventilation are required for accurate PFT measurements in non-cooperative subjects. We compared two methods of apnea induction in infant olive baboons (Papio anubis). METHODS: Pulmonary function testing results were compared during apnea induced by hyperventilation (CO2 washout) vs. intravenous propofol (1 dose 10 mg/kg). PFT was evaluated using a hot-wire pneumotachometer incorporated within an Avea ventilator in

Effects of endometriosis on immunity and mucosal microbial community dynamics in female olive baboons.

Endometriosis is defined as the growth of endometrial tissue in ectopic locations, and is associated with altered immune and microbial phenotypes. It is unclear if these changes are the result of the disease or may be causative. We induced endometriosis in non-human primates (Papio Anubis) to test our hypothesis that the growth of endometriotic lesions results in alterations in immune and microbial dynamics that may advance disease progression. Baboon samples were collected pre-inoculation (prior to disease induction), at 3, 6, 9, and 15 months after disease induction. Tolerant regulatory T-ce
