Viral load of human bocavirus-1 in stools from children with viral diarrhoea in Paraguay.

Since their discovery, four species of human bocavirus (HBoV) have been described in patients with respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases. However, a clear causal association between HBoV-1 and gastroenteritis has not been demonstrated. In this study, we describe the detection and quantification of HBoV-1 in stools from children with acute non-bacterial gastroenteritis using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. HBoV-1 genome was detected in 10.6% of stools with frequent association with rotavirus and norovirus. The median of HBoV-1 viral load was 1.88 × 104 genome/ml, lower than previous

Detection of high risk human papillomavirus cervical infections by the hybrid capture in Asunción, Paraguay.

Cervical cancer is the most frequent malignant tumour of women in Latin America being human papillomavirus (HPV) the main cause. The aim of this study was to increase the knowledge about the cervical infections with oncogenic HPV types (HR-HPV) in Asuncion, Paraguay. Two hundred and seventy-two cervical samples were analyzed using hybrid capture II assay (HCA II) for HR-HPV. The frequency of HR-HPV in the study group was 44%. HR-HPV was detected in 25% of the women negative for squamous intraepithelial lesions (NSIL), 72% with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS), 68% w

Nationwide seroprevalence study of hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses among blood donors in Paraguay.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) remain major global health challenges, together accounting for approximately 1.1 million deaths annually and representing leading causes of chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. In Paraguay, the true burden remains poorly defined, hindering effective public health planning toward the WHO's 2030 elimination goal. This cross-sectional study aimed to establish a comprehensive, nationally representative epidemiological baseline among blood donors. We prospectively analyzed 85,811 blood donor samples. Screening involved c

Evaluation of Cross-Protective Responses against Mayaro Virus among Chikungunya Virus-Infected Patients from Paraguay.

Mayaro virus (MAYV) is a mosquito-borne alphavirus endemic to Latin America and the Caribbean. It is closely related to chikungunya virus (CHIKV), which has a more global circulation that overlaps with MAYV-endemic areas. Both viruses cause similar symptoms of acute febrile illness and chronic joint pain. Human studies have attempted to determine whether CHIKV can generate cross-protective immunity against MAYV because of their close genetic and antigenic relationship but could not definitively rule out past exposure to MAYV. We investigated cross-reactive MAYV responses using paired blood sam

Coxiella burnetii seroprevalence in sheep herd from Paraguay: First evidence of bacterial circulation in the country.

Coxiella burnetii is the agent of Q fever, a disease that poses risks to public health and damages livestock. We discovered the circulation of C. burnetii for the first time in Paraguay, based on the seropositivity of a flock of >300 sheep. The animals were tested by IFA for anti-C. burnetii antibodies and by SAM for anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies, an important differential diagnosis for reproductive disorders in sheep in Paraguay. C. burnetii seropositivity was determined in 45%, in contrast to Leptospira spp. which had no reactive samples. Cases of miscarriage and fetal resorption were asso

[Anti-diabetic effect of ethanol extract of Cyclolepis genistoides D. Don (Palo azul), made in Paraguay].

Extract of Cyclolepis genistoides D. Don (vernacular name Palo azul; Palo) are traditionally consumed in the Republic of Paraguay in South America for the treatment of diabetes and kidney disease, and is sold in Japan as dietary supplement. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of anti-diabetes activity of Palo, especially focused on insulin resistance. Palo promoted adipocytes differentiation and regulated adipokine profiles in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by modulation of PPARγ, a major regulator of adipose differentiation. Human adipocyte showed almost similar profile with 3T3-L1 against Palo tr

Identification of the sex pheromone of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) (Diptera: Psychodidae) from Asunción, Paraguay.

The sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of Leishmania (L.) infantum (Nicolle), the causative agent of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) in the New World. Male Lu. longipalpis have secretory glands which produce sex pheromones in either abdominal tergites 4 or 3 and 4. These glands are sites of sex pheromone production and each pheromone type may represent true sibling species. In Latin America, apart from Lu. pseudolongipalpis Arrivillaga and Feliciangeli from Venezuela, populations of Lu. longipalpis s.l. can be identified by their male-produced sex pheromones: (S)-9-methylg

The concentration of tuberculosis within Paraguay's Indigenous population, 2018-2022: a retrospective population-based study.

BACKGROUND: While over the past decade global incidence rates of tuberculosis (TB) have decreased, in Paraguay incidence has risen. A new reporting system implemented in 2018 has not previously been used to characterise trends in TB and identify areas to prioritise for the expansion of access to TB diagnostics and treatment programmes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of all TB cases notified to the Paraguay National Program for Tuberculosis Control (NPTC) from 2018 to 2022. We quantified trends in case notifications spatially and in specific populations identified as vulnerable by
