Altered stability of brain functional architecture after sleep deprivation: A resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies using static and dynamic functional connectivity (FC) approaches have revealed brain dysfunction resulting from sleep deprivation (SD). The effects of SD on the stability of brain functional architecture remain unclear. This study investigated the functional stability (FS) changes induced by SD and its association with neurocognitive alterations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we recruited 24 healthy women. All participants underwent two sessions of resting-state fMRI scanning and neurocognitive ass

Associations of Serum Liver Function Markers With Brain Structure, Function, and Perfusion in Healthy Young Adults.

Background: Previous neuroimaging studies have demonstrated brain abnormalities in patients with hepatic diseases. However, the identified liver-brain associations are largely limited to disease-affected populations, and the nature and extent of such relations in healthy subjects remain unclear. We hypothesized that serum liver function markers within a normal level would affect brain properties. Method: One hundred fifty-seven healthy young adults underwent structural, resting-state functional, and arterial spin labeling MRI scans. Gray matter volume (GMV), regional homogeneity (ReHo), and ce

Effect-size seed-based d mapping of resting-state fMRI for persistent insomnia disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recently, several functional neuroimaging studies have been conducted in patients with persistent insomnia disorder, but these studies have yielded diverse findings. We aimed to identify convergence in function across the heterogeneity of patients, modalities, and methods for insomnia disorder by performing a quantitative coordinate-based meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a quantitative, voxel-wise meta-analysis of resting-state fMRI studies using seed-based d mapping to find convergence of functional alterations in persistent insomnia disorder. RESULTS: We inclu

Memory loss and memory reorganization patterns in temporal lobe epilepsy patients undergoing anterior temporal lobe resection, as demonstrated by pre-versus post-operative functional MRI.

This study was aimed to longitudinally assess memory function and whole-brain memory circuit reorganization in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) by comparing activation potentials before versus after anterior temporal lobe (ATL) resection. Nineteen patients with medically-intractable TLE (10 left TLE, 9 right TLE) and 15 healthy controls were enrolled. Group analyses were conducted pre- and post-ATL of a novelty complex scene-encoding paradigm comparing areas of blood oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal activations on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). None of the pre-oper

Altered Effective Connectivity of the Pain Matrix in Herpes Zoster and Postherpetic Neuralgia Patients: Granger Causality Analysis of Resting-State fMRI.

BACKGROUND: Shingles can cause long-term pain and negative emotions, along with changes in brain function. In this study, Granger Causality Analysis (GCA) was used to compare herpes zoster (HZ) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) differences in effective connections within the "pain matrix" between patients and healthy controls to further understand patterns of interaction between brain regions and explore the relationship between changes in effective connections and clinical features. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans were performed on 55 HZ; 55 PHN; and

Experiential seizures related to the hippocampal-parahippocampal spatial representation system.

Ictal visual hallucinations may have occipital as well as temporal lobe origin. We report a patient with clustering of focal aware seizures with visual hallucinations. Ictal EEG findings and seizure semiology with alternating contralateral elementary visual phenomena and non-lateralizing experiential hallucinations (visual scenes, memory flashbacks, spatial distortion) corresponded to a lesion in the posterior part of the right parahippocampal gyrus. This area is part of the hippocampal-parahippocampal system for mapping allocentric space. Within this system, the parahippocampal cortex encodes

Correlation between white matter damage and gray matter lesions in multiple sclerosis patients.

We observed the characteristics of white matter fibers and gray matter in multiple sclerosis patients, to identify changes in diffusion tensor imaging fractional anisotropy values following white matter fiber injury. We analyzed the correlation between fractional anisotropy values and changes in whole-brain gray matter volume. The participants included 20 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis and 20 healthy volunteers as controls. All subjects underwent head magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging. Our results revealed that fractional anisotropy values decreased

Theta-Beta/Gamma Coupling Identifies Bothersome Tinnitus Induced by Thalamocortical Dysrhythmia.

BACKGROUND: The phantom sound of tinnitus can be an extremely debilitating condition. The thalamocortical dysrhythmia (TCD) hypothesis is a feature of subjective tinnitus; however, its consistency in characterizing different types of tinnitus remains unclear. METHOD: We compared theta-beta/gamma coupling in multichannel EEG recordings from subjects with bothersome tinnitus (BT), non-bothersome tinnitus (NBT), and healthy controls (HC). Additionally, we used these EEG features to distinguish BT from NBT by employing the k-nearest neighbor (KNN) model. RESULTS: Theta-beta/gamma phase-amplitude

Hippocampal spatial view cells for memory and navigation, and their underlying connectivity in humans.

Hippocampal and parahippocampal gyrus spatial view neurons in primates respond to the spatial location being looked at. The representation is allocentric, in that the responses are to locations "out there" in the world, and are relatively invariant with respect to retinal position, eye position, head direction, and the place where the individual is located. The underlying connectivity in humans is from ventromedial visual cortical regions to the parahippocampal scene area, leading to the theory that spatial view cells are formed by combinations of overlapping feature inputs self-organized base

Hippocampal Connectivity of the Presubiculum in the Common Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

The marmoset (a New World monkey) has recently received much attention as an experimental animal model; however, little is known about the connectivity of limbic regions, including cortical and hippocampal memory circuits, in the marmoset. Here, we investigated the neuronal connectivity of the marmoset, especially focusing on the connectivity between the hippocampal formation and the presubiculum, using retrograde and anterograde tracers (cholera toxin-B subunit and biotin dextran amine). We demonstrated the presence of a direct projection from the CA1 pyramidal cell layer to the deep layers o

ACC and IPL networks in the perception of the faces of parents during selective tasks.

The perception of the faces of parents is different from that of other faces. Mother's face perception is associated with childbearing and parenting and has specific cognitive processing properties. Yet, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. We investigated the neural network that is involved in the perception of parent's face based upon parental face selective tasks that were completed by 23 normal adults. Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a task block design with fixation cross sign control fMRI were used. The faces activated the right inferior frontal gyrus,

Functional Connectivity with the Default Mode Network Is Altered in Fibromyalgia Patients.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) patients show altered connectivity with the network maintaining ongoing resting brain activity, known as the default mode network (DMN). The connectivity patterns of DMN with the rest of the brain in FMS patients are poorly understood. This study employed seed-based functional connectivity analysis to investigate resting-state functional connectivity with DMN structures in FMS. Sixteen female FMS patients and 15 age-matched, healthy control subjects underwent T2-weighted resting-state MRI scanning and functional connectivity analyses using DMN network seed regions.

Functional lateralization of the medial temporal lobe in novel associative processing during creativity evaluation.

Although hemispheric lateralization of creativity has been a longstanding topic of debate, the underlying neurocognitive mechanism remains poorly understood. Here we designed 2 types of novel stimuli-"novel useful and novel useless," adapted from "familiar useful" designs taken from daily life-to demonstrate how the left and right medial temporal lobe (MTL) respond to novel designs of different usefulness. Taking the "familiar useful" design as a baseline, we found that the right MTL showed increased activation in response to "novel useful" designs, followed by "novel useless" ones, while the
