The keratinization disorder in collodion babies evolving into lamellar ichthyosis. Its possible relevance for determining the primary defect in lamellar ichthyosis.

Two collodion baby girls with disorder evolving into lamellar ichthyosis were followed by light and electron microscopy. Light microscopically, the neonatal colloidion skin was characterized by a thick compact stratum corneum which was PAS positive in its upper two thirds, by a thin stratum granulosum and by a non-acanthotic stratum spinosum with normal mitotic activity. Electron microscopically, the upper stratum corneum appeared pathological, whereas the lower part was normal except for some minor parakeratosis. The main alterations in the underlying stratum granulosum were diminished tonofi

[Clinical heterogeneity of poikilodermatous mycosis fungoides: A retrospective study of 12 cases].

INTRODUCTION: Poikilodermatous mycosis fungoides is a rare and indolent clinical variant of mycosis fungoides (MF). It can be difficult to distinguish from poikilodermatous parapsoriasis, a group of chronical dermatoses that may sometimes progress to MF. We aimed to specify the clinical, histopathological and developmental features of these entities by means of a retrospective study of 12 cases followed in our center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We identified cases of poikiloderma for which a diagnosis of MF or parapsoriasis was made by the physician. Photographs and histological slides were review

Spiny keratoderma: A review of case reports and histopathological descriptions.

Spiny keratoderma (SpK) is a rare skin condition characterized by spine-like papules on the palms and soles. The condition is identified under several names such as "music box spine keratosis" and "palmoplantar filiform hyperkeratosis," creating ambiguity in the diagnostic and histopathologic features of the disease. In this study, we reviewed 84 cases of SpK to examine patient demographics, medical history, clinical and histopathological descriptions, and sporadic versus hereditary onset. Notably, the most used histopathological terms were "parakeratosis" and "hypogranulosis," and the most us

Dermoscopy of Zosteriform and Swirling Pattern Type 1 Segmental Darier Disease.

Dear Editor, Segmental Darier disease (DD) is a rare disease with around 40 described English literature cases. It is hypothesized that one of the causes of the disease is a post-zygotic somatic mutation for the calcium ATPase pump, only present in lesional skin. There are two types of segmental DD: type 1, where lesions follow Blaschko's lines unilaterally, and type 2, characterized by focal areas of increased severity in patients with generalized DD (1). Type 1 segmental DD is not easily diagnosed due to the lack of positive family history, the late onset of the disease in the third or fourt

Nail changes in alopecia areata: light and electron microscopy.

Fragments of nail keratin removed with tweezers from patients suffering from alopecia areata were examined using light microscopy and electron microscopy. The results obtained from these two techniques show nail changes which are slits, cupuliform dips of the upper edge and parakeratosis, under light microscopy; vacuoles, depletion of keratin fibers, and electron-dense fibrillary deposits, under electron microscopy. These changes predominate in the nail plate with a maximum in the upper part while the subungual keratin is preserved. A serious disorder of the matrix keratinization is probably t

Psoriatic plaques in Macaca fascicularis.

An adult male cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) developed erythematous plaques with adherent white scales on the skin. Microscopically, the epidermis had regular acanthosis with marked parakeratosis, focal absence of stratum granulosum, and spongiform pustules and Munro-like microabscesses. These histologic findings were suggestive of psoriasis vulgaris.

Hyperkeratotic erythema multiforme variant in 17 dogs.

BACKGROUND: A new canine subgroup defined as 'old-dog' or 'hyperkeratotic' erythema multiforme (HKEM) with marked hyperkeratosis and parakeratosis has been proposed without any detailed description of larger case series. OBJECTIVES: We report herein the signalment, clinical signs, treatment outcome, and histopathological and immunological findings in 17 dogs with HKEM. ANIMALS: Inclusion criteria were the presence of (i) scaly skin lesions with or without crusting; and (ii) microscopic lesions typical of EM (i.e. a panepidermal cytotoxic lymphocytic dermatitis with or without basal keratinoc

Histopathology of oesophagogastric lesions in pigs.

The development of parakeratotic lesions and ulcers of the oesophagogastric epithelium was studied in pigs from a variety of sources and of ages ranging from 10 to 22 weeks. In general, the severity, as assessed by gross appearance, paralleled the depth to which parakeratotic change extended into the epithelium. However, some early degenerative change and erosion was observed in epithelium graded as macroscopically normal. Separation and erosion usually occurred beneath a band of epithelial cells with cytoplasmic pallor and nuclear degeneration underlying the parakeratotic layers. These findin

Perianal Hailey-Hailey disease: an unusual differential diagnosis of condylomata acuminata.

We describe a 25-year-old woman with multiple papules in the perianal and perineal area, clinically resembling condylomata acuminata. The histology revealed an acantholytic epidermis and focal parakeratosis. The lesions were diagnosed as Hailey-Hailey disease localized in the perianal areal and need to be distinguished from human papillomavirus-associated genital lesions.

Porokeratoma.

Cornoid lamellation is a specific disorder of epidermal maturation manifested by a vertical "column" of parakeratosis and is the hallmark of porokeratosis. The cornoid lamella is characterized by a ridgelike parakeratosis. We present 11 patients with solitary lesions of a distinct pattern of cornoid lamellation. The mean age at presentation clinically was 57 years; there were 9 men and 2 women. The duration of the lesions ranged from 3 months to 5 years (mean of 23 mo). All lesions were solitary, distributed mainly on the distal upper and lower limbs, and were clinically described as hyperkera

Oral condyloma acuminatum or venereal wart. Case report.

Oral condyloma acuminatum or venereal wart is an infectious disease of the oral mucosa caused by a virus similar or identical to that causing Verrucae vulgaris and plantaris. It consists of papillomatous projections with marked parakeratosis or keratosis and acanthotic epithelial downgrowths. Vacuolated cells are often a feature of the stratum spinosum. Criteria for the differential diagnosis and surgical management of this condition are presented.

Chromatin accessibility and transcriptome integrative analysis revealed AP-1-mediated genes potentially modulate histopathology features in psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a chronic and hyperproliferative skin disease featured by hyperkeratosis with parakeratosis, Munro micro-abscess, elongation of rete pegs, granulosa thinning, and lymphocyte infiltration. We previously profiled gene expression and chromatin accessibility of psoriatic skins by transcriptome sequencing and ATAC-seq. However, integrating both of these datasets to unravel gene expression regulation is lacking. Here, we integrated transcriptome and ATAC-seq of the same psoriatic and normal skin tissues, trying to leverage the potential role of chromatin accessibility and th

Hereditary zinc deficiency (Adema disease) in cattle, an animal parallel to acrodermatitis enteropathica.

Adema disease and acrodermatitis enteropathica, two parallel syndromes in calves of Friesian descent and in man, are described. Both are congenital zinc deficiency disorders with a lethal course if left untreated. Complete recovery follows oral zinc therapy. Symptoms and findings are set out in Table I. Diseased calves may serve as animal models for further studies on acrodermatitis enteropathica and the biological role of zinc.

Verruciform Xanthoma: Clinical and Morphologic Spectrum Across Oral, Genital, and Cutaneous Sites.

BACKGROUND: Verruciform xanthoma (VX) is an uncommon, benign epithelial lesion of the oral mucosa. While this entity can also present extraorally, including on the skin and in anogenital areas, the variation in its histologic features in extraoral sites is not yet well defined. Differences in the demographics and morphologic features of oral versus extraoral VX were assessed to help facilitate the accurate diagnosis and management of this lesion. METHODS: After obtaining IRB approval, 110 cases of diagnosed VX were retrospectively collected from our institutional archives spanning from 2000 t

Seven common wombats (Vombatus ursinus) were exposed and two of these were re-exposed to Sarcoptes scabiei var. wombati (Acari: Sarcoptidae). For wombats exposed for the first time, five exposed to 5,000 mites on their shoulder developed moderate to severe parakeratotic mange after 11 wk compared with two given 1,000 mites that developed mild clinical signs of mange after 11 wk. For re-exposed wombats, one of two given 5,000 mites developed mild parakeratotic mange and the other developed severe parakeratotic mange. Initial signs of mange were erythema followed by parakeratosis, alopecia, exco
