[Paranasal sinuses: only one of nature's games?].

BACKGROUND: Many theories exist concerning the function of paranasal sinuses, but it is rather difficult to definitively name the right one. Despite the fact that many of them have been proved to be wrong, they are still used. THEORIES: Galen postulated 2000 years ago that they were "porous bones", which helped with weight reduction. Like Galen's theory, most of the others have been refuted as well. A list of these refuted theories covers a range of postulated functions including a relative warming or moistening of the breath, protection against high pressure in the nasal region when sneezing

Transorbital penetrating injury of the paranasal sinuses.

Penetrating injuries of the paranasal sinuses due to foreign bodies are rare, especially as a result of a traffic accident. Here we report a patient with a ballpoint pen lodged in his left eye following a traffic accident. The pen extended from the medial aspect of the left orbit, through the left ethmoid sinus and the nasal septum, to the right sphenoid sinus. We removed the pen uneventfully using endoscopic sinus surgery. There are no similar reports in the English literature and we therefore present this case because of its rarity.

[Congenital malformations of nose and paranasal sinuses].

410 patients with malformations of the external ear or nasal cavity were examined. Basing on this evidence, clinical and diagnostic aspects of agenesias, hypogenesias, hypergenesia, dysgenesia, persistence and dystopias of the nose and intranasal structures are analyzed. Both severe and "minor" anomalies are considered. Endoscopic diagnosis of the malformations is described.

Five cases of mucormycosis in paranasal sinuses.

Five cases of mucormycosis are reported, 2 of them suffered from immunosuppression, the other 3 did not. We conclude that a combination of CT and bacteriological findings is useful for the diagnosis of mucormycosis differentially from other diseases. Therapy consisted of paranasal debridement and administration of amphotericin B.

Paranasal sinus radiology, Part 4B: Maxillary sinuses.

The maxillary sinus is frequently involved by inflammatory change. It is also the sinus that is most often affected by intrinsic or neighboring neoplasms. Since neoplasia and inflammatory disease may mimic each other, radiologic examination often becomes the principal means of differentiating them. Principles of radiologic diagnosis, with attention to changes in the various bony margins in maxillary disease processes, form the basis of this article.

Paranasal sinus radiology, Part 2B: ethmoidal sinuses.

The clinician must have a high level of suspicion in order to detect ethmoidal sinus disease. Survey plain film radiographic examination may provide information about gross changes in ethmoidal sinus transparency and the sinus walls. Conventional tomographic study will often aid evaluation of the ethmoidal sinus walls which may be obscured by overlying structures on plain films. Computerized tomography adds a new dimension to ethmoidal sinus study. By revealing not only bone changes but soft-tissue abnormality as well, more complete understanding of the disease process is gained. Computerized

Mucinous adenocarcinomas of nose and paranasal sinuses.

This study concerns the Clinicopathologic findings for 18 patients with mucinous adenocarcinomas of nose and/or paranasal sinuses. Males in the 5th decade of life predominated in the series. Nasal obstruction, a growing mass in a sinus, or epistaxis were the most frequent complaints. Ten patients had tumors in the maxillary antrum, and the nasal cavity was the site in 5 patients. Histopathologically, the tumors were moderately to well differentiated, with a few poorly differentiated types. Tumor with the solid pattern of growth were anaplastic; these patients had poorer prognoses. For most pat

Nasal nitric oxide flux from the paranasal sinuses.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Upper airway nitric oxide (NO) is physiologically important in airway regulation and defense, and can be modulated by various airway inflammatory conditions, including allergic rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis - with and without polyposis. Paranasal sinuses serve as a NO 'reservoir', with concentrations typically exceeding those measured in lower airway (fractional exhaled NO or FeNO) by a few orders of magnitude. However, the dynamics of NO flux between the paranasal sinuses and main nasal airway, which are critical to respiratory NO emission, are poorly understood. REC

Fibrosarcomas of the Paranasal Sinuses: A Systematic Review.

Fibrosarcomas are rare, malignant neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. Fibrosarcomas appear to be sporadic, but cases of fibrosarcomas secondary to radiation of nasopharyngeal carcinomas have been reported. Paranasal sinus fibrosarcomas (PNFS) are even rarer with few cases being reported since the 1950s. There have been several retrospective cohort studies examining PNFS; however, to our knowledge, no comprehensive review exists. This review aims to summarize the findings of all published cases of PNFS from the 1950s to the 2020s. We hope that a comprehensive review will assist in accurate and ear

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease of the paranasal sinuses.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is becoming increasingly documented. It was first described in relation to autoimmune pancreatitis. Features of the disease include tissue infiltration by IgG4 plasma cells with associated fibrosis and the growth of pseudotumours. A 71-year-old woman presented with increasing right cheek swelling and mild proptosis. Ten years earlier, she had a similar presentation and was diagnosed with an inflammatory pseudotumour. Examination revealed a lesion in the right nasal cavity. CT and MRI confirmed a mass within the right maxillary antrum extending into t

Hypertelorism Secondary to Mucocele in the Paranasal Sinuses.

Ocular hypertelorism was introduced by Greig as an increased interpupillary distance. The paranasal sinus mucoceles are acquired lesions for various reasons; however, their behavior is progressive, capable of eroding the bone and extending to the orbital and intracranial regions. The objective is to present a clinical case of orbital hypertelorism secondary to mucocele in the paranasal sinuses. This is a 72-year-old male patient who came presenting an increase in volume in the right nasoorbitoethmoidal region. The isodense lesion occupying the maxillary and right ethmoidal sinuses was confirme

[The paranasal sinuses as the nitric oxide depot].

This paper was designed to report the currently available data on physiology of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses together with the results of national and international investigations on the computer modeling of the air flow in these structures. Also discussed are the gas composition in the paranasal sinuses and the potential factors responsible for the changes in the concentration of nitric oxide with the chemical formula of NO in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.

[Orphan disease of the nose and paranasal sinuses].

Rare rhinological diseases are a diagnostic challenge. From the primary manifestation until the final diagnosis it may take several months or even up to years in which the disease progress is uncontrolled and the disease insufficiently treated. This results in (irreversible) damage and possibly life-threatening situations. The unexpected course of a (misdiagnosed) disease should lead to further diagnostic considerations and steps to detect the orphan disease at a stage as early as possible. In the present work granulomatous diseases of the nose and sinuses caused by mycobacteria, treponemes, k

Drug delivery to paranasal sinuses using pulsating aerosols.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is the major disorder of the upper airways, affecting about 10-15% of the total population. Topical treatment regimens show only modest efficacy, because drug delivery to the posterior nose and paranasal sinuses is still a challenge. Therefore, there is a high rate of functional endoscopic sinus surgery in CRS patients. Most nasally administered aerosolized drugs, like nasal pump sprays, are efficiently filtered by the nasal valve and do not reach the posterior nasal cavity and the sinuses, which are poorly ventilated. However, as highlighted in this review, sinus

Anatomic variations of paranasal sinuses-clinical case report.

This article describes the clinical case of an 86-year-old female patient with an asymptomatic clinical condition, without presenting a history of previous traumatisms. When routine radiographic exam-panoramic radiograph-was performed, the following extensions of the paranasal sinuses were found: maxillary sinus (palate), sphenoid sinus (pterygoid process, major wing, and anterior clinoid process), and supraorbital portion of the frontal sinus. Thus computerized tomography was performed to confirm the diagnosis.

Fungal disease of the nose and paranasal sinuses.

Fungal infections of the nose and paranasal sinuses represent a spectrum of diseases ranging from colonization to invasive rhinosinusitis. Clinical manifestations are largely dependent on the immune status of the host, and given the ubiquitous nature of these organisms, exposure is unavoidable. Noninvasive disease includes asymptomatic fungal colonization, fungus balls, and allergic fungal rhinosinusitis. Invasive disease includes indolent chronic rhinosinusitis, granulomatous fungal sinusitis, and acute fulminant fungal rhinosinusitis. A differentiation of these somewhat overlapping syndromes

[Paranasal sinuses mucoceles. Our experience in 72 patients].

INTRODUCTION: Traditional treatment for paranasal sinuses mucoceles recommended total removal through external approaches. Since the 90s, endoscopic marsupialization has been proposed as optimal surgical treatment. We present our experience in the treatment of this pathology. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective review of 72 patients treated for paranasal sinuses mucoceles between 1980 and 2006 in our ENT department was performed. We describe clinical features, surgical approaches employed and recurrence of disease. RESULTS: The sample was composed of 72 patients with average follow-up perio
