The genetics of delusional psychoses.

In a genetic study of the first-degree relatives of 77 patients with delusional (paranoid) psychoses, the morbidity risks for schizophrenia, affective disorders, and atypical psychoses were evaluated using ICD-9 criteria. The prevalence of schizophrenia was 3.10 percent (4.12 percent with age correction to 40 years and 4.94 percent with age correction to age 60), which is higher than in investigations of paranoid psychoses, but lower than in studies of paranoid schizophrenia. The prevalence figure for affective disorders (age-corrected 3.04 percent for unipolar plus bipolar patients) is also i

[Personality disorders related to schizophrenia].

Personality disorders related to schizophrenia were described since Kraepelin's works. According to the DMS III-R those disorders are gathered into the A cluster of personality disorders consisting in: schizotypal, schizoid and paranoid personality disorders. Schizotypal and paranoid personalities are biologically linked to schizophrenia and support the concept of "schizophrenia spectrum". Until now such a link is not found between schizoid personality and schizophrenia. Future research in the field of those personality disorders will bring a better knowledge in the pathogenesis of schizophren

Classification of chronic psychoses including delusional disorders and schizophrenias.

A classification of chronic psychoses including nonparanoid schizophrenia, paranoid schizophrenia, paranoid state and paranoia (delusional disorder) is presented. This classification is dependent on a systematic increase in number of symptoms with each group. In particular, delusional disorder is examined with regard to family history. It is clear from the data which are presented that delusional disorder is more likely to be associated with a family history of such traits as suspiciousness, jealousy, secretiveness, and the presence of paranoid behavior or delusions. There is evidence that suc

Through the lens of schizophrenia: Recognizing negative facial expressions and family patterns.

Schizophrenia is a complex disorder with symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and impaired social interactions, and deficits in facial emotion recognition are a key area of impairment. Studies indicate that recognizing facial emotions is essential for social interaction, and individuals with schizophrenia show significant difficulties, especially in recognizing negative emotions. Previous research has primarily focused on patients, with less attention on their first-degree relatives. This study investigates the ability to recognize negative facial expressions in paranoid and non-paranoi

[Apropos of a misdiagnosed form of paranoia: paranoia of the elderly].

The expression of elements of a paranoid symptomatology (suspicion, mistrust, hostility, etc.) is frequently seen in the elderly patients. Paranoid symptom is non-specific in geronto-psychiatric practice. The association with a cognitive disorder is frequent. The relationship between this trouble and a previous paranoid personality disorder appears, according to literature, looser than in the younger patients. The paranoid behavioral pattern often stands for the elderly as a defense against feelings of inferiority and humiliation. The expression of a paranoid symptomatology is a hamper for the

[The characteristics of the cognitive defect in patients with different variants of late paranoia].

Evoked cortical activity in response to acoustic stimuli (oddball paradigm) was studied in patients with different paranoid disorders. The analysis covered the N150 negative wave and positive complex P300. In patients with paranoid schizophrenia and paranoid form of involutional psychosis cortical responses to the stimuli and cortex effects were not recorded. Such cognitive deficiency is believed to be typical for schizophrenia.

Dimensional representations of DSM-IV cluster A personality disorders in a population-based sample of Norwegian twins: a multivariate study.

BACKGROUND: The 'odd' or 'Cluster A' personality disorders (PDs) - paranoid, schizoid and schizotypal PDs - were created in DSM-III with little empirical foundation. We have examined the relationship between the genetic and environmental risk factors for dimensional representations of these three personality disorders. METHOD: These personality disorders were assessed using the Structured Interview for DSM-IV Personality (SIDP-IV) in 1386 young adult twin pairs from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health Twin Panel. Using Mx, a single-factor independent pathway twin model was fitted to the

Overlapping clusters of gray matter deficits in paranoid schizophrenia and psychotic bipolar mania with family history.

The purpose of this study was to assess volumetric abnormalities of gray matter throughout the entire brain in patients with paranoid schizophrenia or with bipolar mania compared with control groups. We obtained weighted 3D T1 magnetic resonance images from 23 patients with paranoid schizophrenia, 24 patients with psychotic bipolar mania, and 36 healthy controls. Gray matter volume differences were assessed using optimized volumetric voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Both paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar mania group showed reduction of gray matter volume in the superior temporal gyrus (STG) (Br

Associations between body weight and personality disorders in a nationally representative sample.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether, in the general population, individuals in numerous abnormal body weight categories had higher odds of having personality disorders (PDs) than normal-weight individuals. Although personality functioning is hypothesized to be associated with body weight, there is a dearth of empirical evaluation of this topic. METHODS: The association of body weight (five categories: underweight [body mass index [BMI] <18.5]; normal [18.5 <or= BMI <25]; overweight [25 <or= BMI <30]; obese [30 <or= BMI <40]; and extremely obese [BMI >or=40]) with personality disorders was investi

[Paranoid syndrome, paranoid reaction, paranoia].

The term paranoid is derived from the Greek word paranoia meaning nadnese. It does not only mean self-reference, but there are various personality features as they are hostility, a tendency towards aggressiveness, irritability, a lack of sense of humour, feelings of overestimation of one-self and a tendency towards accusations. These features may appear also within normal psychology and they becomeclinically important after thein increase of intensity and conspicuousness (los sof hearing, long-term abuse of alcohol and psychostimulants) and organic disorders of the brain may contribute to the

Paranoid schizophrenia: an unorthodox view.

Most paranoid patients have traditionally been diagnosed as schizophrenic, although considerable evidence points to the dissimilarities between paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenic patients and to commonalities between paranoid and affective disorder groups. Based on a review of research, it is suggested that paranoid schizophrenia, at least in some of its varieties, may more fruitfully be conceptualized as a phenotypic expression of an underlying depressive mode than as a schizophrenic form. This formulation is presented within the framework of a broad examination of diagnostic issues.

Qualitatively distinct factors contribute to elevated rates of paranoia in autism and schizophrenia.

A converging body of clinical and empirical reports indicates that autism features elevated rates of paranoia comparable to those of individuals with paranoid schizophrenia. However, the distinct developmental courses and symptom manifestations of these two disorders suggest that the nature of paranoid ideation may differ between them in important and meaningful ways. To evaluate this hypothesis, we compared patterns of responses on the Paranoia Scale between actively paranoid individuals with schizophrenia (SCZP), individuals with schizophrenia who were not actively paranoid (SCZNP), adults w

Paranoid personality has a dimensional latent structure: taxometric analyses of community and clinical samples.

Although paranoid personality is one of the most commonly diagnosed personality disorders and is associated with numerous negative life consequences, relatively little is known about the structural properties of this condition. This study examines whether paranoid personality traits represent a latent dimension or a discrete class (i.e., taxon). In Study 1, the authors conducted taxometric analyses of paranoid personality disorder criteria in a sample of 731 patients participating in the Collaborative Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders project (Gunderson et al., 2000) who had been adm

Social cognitive bias and neurocognitive deficit in paranoid symptoms: evidence for an interaction effect and changes during treatment.

Persistent paranoid symptoms are best understood as having multiple causal mechanisms. An enhanced multidimensional understanding of paranoia may result from the convergence of two distinct measurement paradigms, experimental psychopathology and social cognitive research. This study investigated the role of neurocognitive deficits and emotion misperception bias as they relate to paranoid symptoms at two different time points in a sample of individuals with severe mental illness (primarily schizophrenia spectrum disorders [N=91]) undergoing intensive psychosocial rehabilitation. Before intensiv

Understanding the Relationship Between Complicated Grief Symptoms and Patterns of Personality Disorders in a Substance Users' Sample: A Network Analysis Approach.

BACKGROUND: The presence of personality disorders is greatly prevalent among substance users. Personality disorders could increase vulnerability to complicated grief symptoms. Bereavement is commonly overlooked among substance users. We used network analysis to estimate the structure of relations between patterns of personality disorders and complicated grief symptoms among a bereaved substance-using population. METHODS: Complicated grief and personality disorders were assessed in a sample of 196 bereaved substance users. We use the graphical least absolute shrinkage selection operator (LASSO

A family study of schizophrenic and normal control probands: implications for the spectrum concept of schizophrenia.

Morbidity risks for mental illness were determined in 750 first-degree relatives of chronic schizophrenic and normal control probands. Psychiatric disorders that were more frequent in relatives of schizophrenic probands than in relatives of normal control probands were chronic schizophrenia (5.8% versus 0.6%), schizotypal personality disorder (definite, 14.6% versus 2.1%; probable, 12.1% versus 6.5%), and paranoid personality disorder (7.3% versus 2.3%). The data suggest that schizotypal and paranoid personality disorders are genetically related to schizophrenia. The implications for schizophr
