BackgroundVertebral compression fractures associated with osteoporosis reduce daily living activities. The primary risk factor for osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVCFs) is the severity of osteoporosis, defined as low bone mineral density (BMD) in both peripheral and central regions. In addition to BMD, sarcopenia is also thought to affect OVCFs by reducing paraspinal muscle mass and strength.ObjectiveWe aimed to evaluate the association between vertebral compression fractures and paraspinal/psoas muscle characteristics, including muscle mass and fatty degeneration, using quantitative MRI me

BACKGROUND: We examined the association between computed tomography (CT)-derived paraspinous muscle density (PSMD) and index (PSMI) and all-cause mortality in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
METHODS: We included 234 hemodialysis patients and used CT images to measure PSMD and PSMI at the third lumbar vertebra level. PSMD and PSMI were determined as the average CT-based value of the paraspinous muscle in Hounsfield units (HUs) and as the paraspinous muscle area adjusted by height (cm2/m2), respectively. We used univariate and multivariate regression analysis to investigate the associations o

Paraspinal muscle atrophy is gaining attention in spine surgery due to its link to back pain, spinal degeneration and worse postoperative outcomes. Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a noninvasive diagnostic tool for muscle quality assessment, primarily utilized for patients with neuromuscular diseases. However, EIM's accuracy for paraspinal muscle assessment remains understudied. In this study, we investigated the correlation between EIM readings and MRI-derived muscle parameters, as well as the influence of dermal and subcutaneous parameters on these readings. We retrospectively analyze

As the use of cross-sectional abdominal and pelvic imaging has increased exponentially in the past several decades, incidental musculoskeletal findings have become commonplace. These are often unrelated to the indication for the examination and are frequently referred to as the "radiologist's blind spot" on these studies. The differential diagnosis for abnormalities of the paraspinal and pelvic musculature is, in many cases, quite different from the anterior abdominal wall muscles. Furthermore, due to their relatively deep location, pathology involving the former muscle groups is more likely t

PURPOSE: Changes in the cross-sectional area (CSA) and functional cross-sectional area (FCSA) of the lumbar multifidus (MF) and erector spinae muscles (ES) are factors that can contribute to low back pain. For the assessment of muscle CSA and composition there are various software and threshold methods used for tissue segmentation in quantitative analysis. However, there is currently no gold standard for software as well as muscle segmentation. This study aims to analyze the measurement error between different image processing software and different threshold methods for muscle segmentation.

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional imaging study of paraspinal muscle degeneration using a new index for easy evaluation.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the natural progression of age-related changes in the lumbar paraspinal muscles and to verify the validity of our new index for evaluating paraspinal muscle degenerationSUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA.: Measurement of paraspinal muscle morphology is an effective method for reflecting atrophy and fat infiltration, but it is complicated to perform. Therefore, we focused on the groove between lumbar paraspinal muscles as a simple index for evaluating paraspinal

OBJECTIVES: Hardware-related complications are rare but important issues after posterior cervical fusion. Current risk stratification relies on bone quality parameters, but other variables may also contribute to mechanical complications. In lumbar spine surgery, paraspinal muscle morphometry has emerged as a predictor of mechanical failure, though cervical-specific evidence is limited. This study evaluates preoperative cervical paraspinal muscle morphometry in predicting mechanical failure following posterior cervical fusion.
METHODS: This retrospective propensity score-matched study included

BACKGROUND: Coronal imbalance in degenerative scoliosis is common and is highly correlated with health-related quality of life. Paraspinal muscle is critical to spine stability, but little is known about its contribution to coronal imbalance in degenerative scoliosis. This study aims to investigate the relationship between paraspinal muscle (PSM) degeneration and coronal imbalance in patients with degenerative scoliosis (DS).
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. A total of 117 patients with DS were retrospectively reviewed. Parameters of PSM (bilateral cross-sectional area, CSA; fat

Introduction: Paraspinal muscles are important for gross motor functions. Impairment of these muscles can lead to poor postural control and ambulation difficulty. Little knowledge exists about the involvement of paraspinal muscles in Becker muscular dystrophy. Objective: In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the involvement of paraspinal muscles with quantitative trunk strength measure and quantitative muscle MRI. Methods and Materials: Eighteen patients with Becker muscular dystrophy underwent trunk, hip, and thigh strength assessment using a Biodex dynamometer and an MRI Dixon scan.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a condition resulting in spinal deformity and tissue adaptation of the paraspinal muscles. Although prior studies have demonstrated asymmetries in fiber type and other energetic features of muscle on the concave side of the curve, muscle morphology, architecture, and composition have not been evaluated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare differences in paraspinal muscle microarchitecture and composition between concave and convex sides of a scoliotic curve in individuals with AIS.
METHODS: Paraspinal muscle biopsies were ob

OBJECTIVE: Paraspinal muscle atrophy (PMA) after posterior cervical fusion is a known complication that causes considerable morbidity. It has been shown in the lumbar spine that preservation of the posterior ramus of the spinal nerve is important in minimizing paraspinal muscle atrophy. During posterior cervical spine fusions, we modified the exposure of the dorsal cervical spine by exposing only the medial two-thirds of the lateral mass utilizing a low electrocautery setting. In a retrospective analysis, we compared the incidence of paraspinal muscle atrophy using this modified technique with

Electromyographic (EMG) examination demonstrating marked segmental compromise of the posterior primary ramus distal to the spinal root with relative sparing of the anterior ramus may be the earliest objective evidence of paraspinal muscle metastasis. Antecedent studies are often initially normal, failing to disclose the underlying cause of back pain. Although paraspinal muscle metastasis has been histopathologically demonstrated at postmortem, attempts to image the suspected malignancy with computed tomography have been unsuccessful because the tumor in muscle remains isodense. This study repo

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional spinal deformity, and paraspinal muscles play an important role as stabilizers of the spinal curve. In this prospective study, we compared elasticity changes in the paraspinal muscles of adolescent patients with scoliosis after surgery or bracing. Elasticity was measured on the concave and convex sides of the paraspinal muscles at the apex of the curve at the beginning of treatment and 6 and 12 months after treatment. Twenty-six patients with correction surgery (n = 15) or bracing (n = 11) were included. At initial evaluation, the Cobb angle was larger in the s

INTRODUCTION: Increased fatty infiltration of the paraspinal muscles (PM) has been recognized as a sign of decreased muscle quality in patients with degenerative disc disease. However, whether fatty infiltration is a consequence of a neurogenic process due to spinal nerve root compression has not yet been determined.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between fatty infiltration of the paraspinal muscles (PM) and neurogenic remodeling of motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) in patients with lumbar radiculopathy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 58 adult patients (32 women) with L5 radiculopathy
