Gaskell revisited: new insights into spinal autonomics necessitate a revised motor neuron nomenclature.

Several concepts developed in the nineteenth century have formed the basis of much of our neuroanatomical teaching today. Not all of these were based on solid evidence nor have withstood the test of time. Recent evidence on the evolution and development of the autonomic nervous system, combined with molecular insights into the development and diversification of motor neurons, challenges some of the ideas held for over 100 years about the organization of autonomic motor outflow. This review provides an overview of the original ideas and quality of supporting data and contrasts this with a more

The association between resting autonomic nervous system activity and bone mineral density in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Elevated sympathetic nervous system activity has been shown to have a detrimental effect on bone mass in animal studies, whereas parasympathetic activity is thought to exert a protective effect. However, little is known about the relationship between autonomic nervous system activity and bone health in humans. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between resting autonomic nervous system activity and areal BMD (aBMD) or volumetric BMD (vBMD) in older adults. METHODS: A total of 119 older adults (27 men, 92 women) were included in this cross-sectional study. Participants

Changes in sympathetic nervous system activity in male smokers after moderate-intensity exercise.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of moderate-intensity exercise on the sympathetic nervous system in male smokers. METHODS: Twenty-eight men (14 smokers and 14 non-smokers, ages 21-46 y) were recruited. The activity of the autonomic nervous system was measured by power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. Spectral power in the frequency domain was quantified by integrating the area under the curve of the very-low-frequency power (0.007-0.035 Hz), low-frequency power (0.035-0.15 Hz), high-frequency power (0.15-0.5 Hz), and total power (0.007-0.5 Hz) bandwidths. We assessed heart r

Autonomic Nervous System Reactivity During Speech Repetition Tasks: Heart Rate Variability and Skin Conductance.

Cognitive and emotional challenges may elicit a physiological stress response that can include arousal of the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight response) and withdrawal of the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for recovery and rest). This article reviews studies that have used measures of electrodermal activity (skin conductance) and heart rate variability (HRV) to index sympathetic and parasympathetic activity during auditory tasks. In addition, the authors present results from a new study with normal-hearing listeners examining the effects of speaking rate on changes in s

Neuromodulating Influence of Two Electroacupuncture Treatments on Heart Rate Variability, Stress, and Vagal Activity.

Introduction: Although the clinical use of electro-acupuncture is widespread, the neuromodulating influence of various applied frequencies is not well established. Objectives: Heart rate variability (HRV), stress and parasympathetic recovery are closely related to health, longevity and vitality in humans. This study was undertaken to determine the influence of different electro-therapy frequencies on various autonomic nervous system markers when applied to a Battlefield Acupuncture Protocol (BFA). Design: A detailed comparison of autonomic nervous system (ANS) response to low frequency (LF) 2.

Potential role of the autonomic nervous system in the immunosuppressive effects of acute morphine administration.

These studies investigated the role of the autonomic nervous system in mediating the immunosuppressive effect of morphine on blood lymphocyte proliferation in rats. To determine the contribution of the autonomic nervous system, rats were pretreated with the ganglionic blocker chlorisondamine (5 mg/kg) prior to morphine (7 mg/kg) administration. Ganglionic blockade with chlorisondamine completely antagonized the inhibitory actions of morphine, suggesting that intact ganglionic transmission was required for the inhibition to occur. Blockade of postganglionic parasympathetic neurotransmission wit

[Neurogenic autonomic dysfunction in adults].

Neurogenic autonomic dysfunction (NAD) is underdiagnosed, and it is likely in patients, who have orthostatic hypotension and symptoms from multiple organ systems as well as abnormal results from a neurological examination. A clinical and neurophysiological examination of the autonomic nervous system combined with a standardised paraclinical evaluation should be performed. NAD may be present in neurodegenerative disorders, vitamin deficiency, toxicity, infection, and in paraneoplastic, metabolic, hereditary and immune-mediated conditions.

[Heart rate variability].

Heart rate variability (HRV) has become a useful parameter for the quantification of autonomic nervous function. HRV has been quantified, either by time domain or frequency domain analysis. Time domain measures, such as CVRR and RR50, are easy to calculate but they only provide information related to parasympathetic activity. The spectral analyses, on the other hand, give us information concerning 3 oscillatory components. The high frequency band (the frequency between 0.15-0.5 Hz) is known as the respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), and the middle frequency band (0.88-0.15 Hz) is attributed to

Analysis of autonomic function in patients with functional dyspepsia using real-time wearable devices and smartphone applications.

Autonomic dysfunction is involved in functional dyspepsia (FD) however, the details have not been elucidated. The aim is to clarify the relationship among autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, life events, and abdominal symptoms by real-time recordings. This is a prospective multicenter study including 9 patients with FD and 23 healthy controls (HC). The ANS activity was recorded for 24 ‍h using a T-shirt-type wearable device. Life events and abdominal symptoms were simultaneously recorded with ANS activity by smartphone application software. We defined low-frequency/high-frequency (LF/HF)

The Parasympathetic Root of the Submandibular Ganglion: A Review.

The submandibular ganglion is a small fusiform-shaped cluster of cell bodies of the parasympathetic nervous system. Parasympathetic innervation of the submandibular gland is not only responsible for the secretion of saliva, but it also plays a main role in the development and regeneration of the gland. The parasympathetic root of the submandibular ganglion or the posterior branch of the lingual nerve to the submandibular ganglion is one of three roots of the submandibular ganglion. Using standard search engines (PubMed, Google), papers in English discussing the anatomy, embryology, variations,

[A status of the adaptational region of the autonomic nervous system in children with chronic gastroduodenitis living under ecologically unfavorable conditions].

The authors carry out the analysis of adaptation disorders of a link of vegetative of nervous system at children with chronic gastroduodenitis, living under poor ecological conditions. It is shown, that in these patients the power of vagus connections with vegetal nervous system prevails. In loading test, the inadequacy of adaptation comes to light. The accumulation of Mn and Cr in the blood serum is accompanied by high power of sympathetic connections with vegetal nervous system and accumulation of Ph in the blood serum--by high power of parasympathetic connections with vegetal nervous system

Neuromodulation device therapy for treatment of hypertensive heart disease.

Hypertensive heart disease (HHD) is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States. Despite the availability of medical therapy it remains a challenge to treat. Autonomic nervous system imbalance resulting in overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system and under activity of the parasympathetic nervous system is integral in the development of hypertension and ultimately the development of HHD. Emerging data suggest that neuromodulation device therapy for treatment of HHD is promising.

Autonomic functions in the early stages of Parkinson's disease.

Disturbances of autonomic nervous functions are common in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and may develop as a result of pathological changes in centers of autonomic regulation such as the hypothalamus, brainstem, and sympathetic ganglia. We examined cardiovascular reflexes using bedside, noninvasive procedures in 20 unmedicated PD patients with early stages of the disease (stage 1 and 2 on the Hoehn and Yahr's scale). Sixteen patients (80%) exhibited some degree of autonomic nervous system dysfunction. These included predominantly cardiovascular functions mediated via the parasympathet

Nervous system: part 3.

This article, which forms part of the life sciences series and is the last of three articles on the nervous system, explores the major divisions of the peripheral nervous system. Motor and sensory nerves will be described before a more detailed examination of the cranial and spinal nerves is provided. The autonomic nervous system will be explored, including the diverse roles of the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions. The role of spinal reflexes in maintaining homeostasis is identified. Motor neurone disease will be discussed briefly as an example of a disorder of the peripheral nervous

Can a Sacrococcygeal Epidural of 0.25% Bupivacaine Prevent the Activation of the Sympathetic Nervous System during Feline Ovariectomy?

The ovariectomy (OVE) procedure can trigger somatosensory and visceral peritoneal nociception. Sacrococcygeal epidural (ScE) anesthesia may complement or replace systemic analgesia used for feline OVE, reducing opioid consumption and their related undesirable adverse effects and consequently reducing or completely blocking the sympathetic nervous system activation during this procedure. The present study aimed to evaluate the activation of the sympathetic nervous system resulting from adding an ScE injection of bupivacaine 0.25% (0.3 mL kg-1) in feline OVE and identify whether this translates

Effectiveness of spinal manipulation in influencing the autonomic nervous system - a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Spinal manipulation (SM) has been hypothesized to influence the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Further, it has been proposed that the effects may vary depending on the segment manipulated. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize the current level of evidence for SM in influencing the ANS in healthy and/or symptomatic population. METHODS: Various databases (n = 8) were searched (inception till May 2023) and 14 trials (n = 618 participants) were included in the review. Two authors independently screened, extracted and assessed the risk of bias in included studies. The d
