Conducting filial therapy with homeless parents.

Homelessness and the associated feelings of loss are highly distressing for parents and their children who experience them. The implications for young, homeless children are clinically significant, as these children tend to display higher rates of depressive, anxious feelings. The literature suggests that parents are especially challenged during a period of homelessness, as they cannot provide for their children financially or emotionally. Evidence-based mental health interventions, such as filial therapy, may assist the parent-child relationship by promoting healing during a highly distressin

Counseling parents on feeding their children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The high-nutrient needs of children for normal growth and development are matched by ready access to low-nutrient high-energy foods. Parents are often confused by new and at times conflicting information. This review discusses three recently published papers that offer specific and important dietary information for school-aged children. RECENT FINDINGS: Lactose intolerance is common in some populations and there are misconceptions about dairy intake. Most lactose-intolerant children can consume some dairy products without symptoms. Fruit-juice intake can predict increased w

[Presence of parents in pediatric imaging].

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the attitude of French pediatric radiologists regarding the presence or absence of parents during pediatric imaging of their child. A mail survey was sent to the French members of the "Société Francophone de Radiologie Pédiatrique". We asked about the inclusion of parents during pediatric imaging procedures. They gave the reasons for their choice and stated if parental presence was helpful or not for the achievement of imaging procedures. Responses were received from 76% of those surveyed. Excluding vascular and interventional procedures, few responden

Neuropsychological dysfunction in parents of schizophrenics.

Neuropsychological measures designed to examine aspects of attention, learning efficiency, and memory were investigated in 14 schizophrenic probands, their 28 parents, and 18 normal individuals. Probands performed at levels significantly below normals on measures of attention and of learning efficiency and performed below their parents on a subset of the same measures. Eight families had one parent with a personal or ancestral pedigree history consistent with schizophrenia; the other parent's personal and ancestral history was negative for schizophrenia. In these families, the probands were si

Children of alcoholic parents. A review.

Children of alcoholics are prone to genetic, environmental, and teratogenic risk factors. This review starts by outlining the development risks due to intrauterine exposure to alcohol. Furthermore, the overall findings from genetic research are summarized. A further section deals with the analysis of the environment of the family with an alcoholic parent. Within the section on psychopathology the special links to conduct disorders and delinquency, hyperkinetic disorders, substance abuse, anxiety and depression, and somatic problems are described. Special consideration is also given to the lite

Child development: what do parents expect?

Expectations of future development were assessed in parents of non-disabled children (n = 240) using the Predictive Adaptive Ability Questionnaire (PAAQ). The reliability estimate for the overall PAAQ was 0.90, with a test-retest reliability of 0.99 and an interrater reliability of 0.83. Parental expectations did not significantly differ from normal adaptive ability developmental standards. Longitudinal examination of parental expectations and their influence on child development and the impact of chronic illness on such expectations is recommended.

Psychologists and children of alcoholic parents.

Clinical evidence has pictured children of alcoholic parents as vulnerable physically, emotionally, socially, academically, and at risk for alcoholism. Review of research indicated that some of these clinical insights have been validated, but much more is needed to fill out an accurate picture for psychologists who will be asked to work with them.

Parents who physically abuse their children.

Increased knowledge of child abuse has mad what was once an infrequently diagnosed condition become recognised as a major pediatric and social problem. While there is no typical profile of an abusive parent, characteristics that have been found more frequently include a history of having been deprived and possible abused in the parent's own childhood, low self-esteem in the mother and increased ill-health in the immediate family members. Personality testing shows that the parents relate poorly to their children and to other people and that they have immature and impetuous personalities. Predic

Febrile convulsions--what do parents do?

To find out about the medical and parental management of children having their first febrile convulsion a hospital-based questionnaire study was carried out in which parents were asked what they did at the time. Fifty-four out of 89 parents brought their child directly to hospital while the remainder attempted to contact their general practitioner, usually successfully, and were then referred to hospital. Whichever course of action the parents chose the outcome was satisfactory. Eighty-seven per cent of convulsions lasted for less than 15 minutes and in only two instances did they last longer

Transformed Parenthood in the Face of ALS: A Profound Struggle for Both Ill Parents and Co-parents.

When a parent is diagnosed with a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), it can have major effects on the family's health. Parenthood itself may also be affected, potentially fueling an urgent need for support from healthcare. Research focusing on this group of parents is nevertheless limited. The aim of this study was to illuminate the meaning of parenthood when a parent has ALS, from the perspective of ill parents and co-parents. An interpretive qualitative study was conducted, using data gathered from interviewing 26 parents (13 ill parent

Liberating parents from guilt: a grounded theory study of parents' internet communities for the recognition of ADHD.

PURPOSE: This study presents a qualitative analysis of information posted on the Internet by two communities of French parents promoting the recognition of ADHD in the context of current health and school practices. METHOD: Grounded Theory (Strauss & Corbin's approach) was applied to the posted messages, with the aim to discover the main concern and common theme through a constant comparison analysis. RESULTS: Liberating parents from feeling responsible for their child's misconduct was found to be the core category. From this perspective, we account for the commitment of the digital communit

Connecting parents' developmental history to family life: Marital instability after the journey of infertility for adoptive parents.

Parents bring their preparenthood experiences into their family relationships, which may have a persistent impact on family dynamics. One such significant experience is infertility, often shared by both partners but differentially experienced by women and men. Using a prospective longitudinal study of adoptive parents with a history of infertility challenges who later adopted a child (N = 461, 91% White), we aimed to (a) examine the impact of preparenthood infertility distress on heterosexual couples' perceived marital instability trajectories in the 11 years of parenthood and (b) test whether

Sexual experiences and behaviours of the parents in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Childhood (ALSPAC).

The aim of this data note is to describe the sexual experiences, functioning and behaviour data collected from the parent cohorts of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) occurring during their childhoods and up to 19 years after the birth of the index child. ALSPAC is an ongoing birth cohort which enrolled 14,541 pregnant women living in Avon, an area of southwest England, with expected dates of delivery between April 1991 and December 1992 inclusive. It continues collecting data on these mothers (age range at delivery <16-41 years), their partners (age range at deliver

Enablers and barriers for hearing parents with deaf children: Experiences of parents and workers in Wales, UK.

BACKGROUND: More than 90% of deaf children are born to hearing families who know little about deafness. Benefits from hearing screening at birth are often lost, as families find little information about pathways for deaf children but are key to ensuring deaf children receive relevant language and communication support. Systems surrounding deaf children and family members are crucial for children's health and social development. Experiences of hearing parents raising deaf children and understanding factors that influence families' experience of navigating pathways for deaf children through heal

Parental Coping, Affective Symptoms, and Affective Reactions to Parenting Stress in Parents of Adolescents During COVID-19.

It is important to improve understanding of how parenting stress and coping strategies may be associated. Various coping strategies have been associated with different psychosocial outcomes, including anxiety and depression. Gender differences in coping between women and men may contribute to women reporting higher levels of psychological distress, depression, and anxiety. However, there is a lack of research on gender differences in stress responses and coping behaviors among parents in response to the stress of parenting adolescents, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current stu

Eco-Emotion Profiles Among Parents and Links to Violent and Neglectful Parenting: Parental Burnout as a Mediating Pathway.

Climate change is a psychosocial stressor with implications for parenting and child safety. Many parents experience eco-emotions that can tax caregiving resources and self-regulation, yet evidence is scarce on how eco-emotion profiles relate to parental burnout and violent and neglectful parenting. This study aimed to identify eco-emotion profiles and to test whether parental burnout explains associations with psychological aggression, physical assault, and neglect toward children. Participants were 1,203 cisgender heterosexual Italian parents (70.16% mothers; M = 45.60, SD = 9.37) who complet

Changes in parenting representations following Circle of Security-Parenting (COS-P) at an Australian Early Parenting Center.

The Circle of Security-Parenting program (COS-P) is a widely disseminated attachment and mentalization-informed parenting intervention. Outcome studies, however, have yielded mixed results and its effectiveness for parents from different demographic groups is largely unknown. This study examined the outcomes of COS-P and explored parent demographics (mother/father status and education). Participants were 117 parents who attended COS-P at an Australian Early Parenting Center. The Composite Caregiving Questionnaire (CCQ) assessed caregiving representations (self-efficacy regarding emotion/affect
