Source-dependent variation in hydroxyl radical production by airborne particulate matter.

Epidemiological studies suggest exposure to airborne particles is responsible for a wide range of adverse health effects, potentially arising from particle-induced oxidative stress. A highly sensitive fluorescence method was employed to measure the production of hydroxyl radical by a broad range of particle types including urban dust, diesel particulate matter, coal fly ash, kaolinite, and silica. Little or no production of *OH was observed in the absence of an added electron donor or H202. In the presence of a biological electron donor (NADPH, 3 mM), the rate of *OH production (ROH) for 3 mg/

Cardiovascular effects of fine particulate matter components in highway patrol officers.

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from traffic affects heart-rate variability, thrombosis, and inflammation. This reanalysis investigated components potentially contributing to such effects in nonsmoking healthy male North Carolina highway patrol troopers. Nine officers were studied four times during their late shift. PM2.5, its elemental composition, and gaseous copollutants were measured inside patrol cars. Components correlated to PM2.5 were compared to cardiac and blood parameters measured 10 and 15 h, respectively, after each shift. Mixed effects models with control for PM2.5 we

[Fine particulate matter - a health hazard for lungs and other organs?].

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies provide evidence that particulate air pollution (PM10) increases pulmonary as well as cardiovascular mortality. This review summarises current hypotheses on the mechanisms of entry of inhaled fine particles into the systemic circulation and the mechanisms of action on the cardiovascular system. PARTICLE ENTRY: Following particle deposition in the lungs, soluble components like metal salts or soluble organics are taken up into the pulmonary capillary blood. Ultrafine particles can pass the lung-blood barrier by endocytosis, transcytosis, or stochastic transp

Effects of particulate matter on daily mortality in 13 Japanese cities.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, numerous reports demonstrating the relationship between an increase in the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and daily mortality have been released in the United States and Europe. There have been few studies that clearly characterize the short-term effects of particulate matter on the mortality in Japan. We conducted data analysis to investigate the short-term effects of suspended particulate matter (SPM) on mortality in Japan. METHODS: In this study, we used data sets from the 13 largest cities containing data on the daily mortality of residents a

Inhibition of Imidacloprid Photolysis by Particulate Matter: Experimental and Computational Evidence.

Neonicotinoid insecticides have been consistently detected in atmospheric particulate matter (PM), highlighting the possible critical role of PM in shaping their environmental persistence and ecological impact. This study investigates the influence of PM on the photolysis of imidacloprid (IMI), a representative neonicotinoid, using computational simulations and laboratory experiments. Results reveal that the adsorption of IMI onto soot particles significantly suppresses its photolysis, reducing its photolysis rate by ∼39-fold and increasing its atmospheric half-life from 7.1 to 279.5 h under s

Maternal exposure to particulate matter during pregnancy and offspring liver function.

Air pollution is associated with hepatic dysfunction, but the evidence in the early childhood remains limited. This study aimed to explore the associations between maternal exposure to particulate matter and offspring liver function, as indicated by serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in children aged 1-2 years. Based on the Fujian Birth Cohort Study (FJBCS), a total of 1046 mother-offspring pairs were analyzed in this study. Maternal mean exposures to PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 were calculated for the entire gestational period and each of the three tri

Associations Between Household Particulate Matter and Inflammatory Cytokines in Cystic Fibrosis.

Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) are vulnerable to environmental exposures due to impaired pulmonary defense mechanisms, yet the contribution of the indoor environment to inflammatory signaling in CF remains poorly understood. While prior studies have focused on ambient air pollution and clinical outcomes, less is known about how short-term indoor particulate matter exposure relates to systemic immune biomarkers. In this pilot study, we evaluated associations between household fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations and circulating cytokines in adults with CF. Participants underwen

Impact of Deoxynivalenol, Cytokines, and Particulate Matter on Human Trophoblast Cells.

Placental inflammation and dysfunction play critical roles in adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction. Exposure to environmental factors, such as dietary toxins, infectious agents, and pollution, is thought to increase the risk of these outcomes. Despite the widespread use of HTR-8/SVneo and BeWo cells as trophoblast models, their comparative sensitivity to maternal exposome-related stimuli has not been systematically evaluated within the same experimental framework. we examined the responses of HTR-8/SVneo and BeWo trophoblast cell lines to mycot

Plasma membrane impacts of particulate matter on the blood-brain barrier.

The potential for inhaled environmental particulate matter (PM) to cause neuronal effects is a growing concern, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. There are two potential exposure routes via transport though the olfactory nerve transport and direct interaction of the circulating PM with the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This study investigated the plausible mechanism by which PM, once in circulation, could cross BBB's via the endotheliocytes, specifically focusing on the role of the plasma membrane. An in vitro BBB model (hCMEC/D3 cells) was exposed to ambient London PM (PM10, PM2.5) a

Particulate matter-induced lung cancer metastasis is inhibited by ginsenoside Rg3.

The risk of exposure to particulate matter (PM) has been consistently highlighted globally owing to its detrimental effects on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems and in the development of lung cancer. Additionally, PM promotes cancer cell metastasis; however, research elucidating the precise mechanisms underlying this phenomenon and the strategies to inhibit it remains limited. The aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanism underlying PM-induced cancer metastasis and investigate the preventive role of ginsenoside Rg3. We treated macrophages with PM and confirmed an increase in th

Quantitative determination of the mineral content of settleable particulate matter samples.

Settleable particulate matter (SPM) samples are characterised by having very similar qualitative compositions. Therefore, there is a need for a sensitive analysis method that can provide valid quantitative information when facing new research challenges. Establishing a valid and repeatable quantitative mineralogical analysis method is essential in order to establish limits to the concentration of certain mineral phases to, in turn, protect human health and ecosystems. An analytical and sample preparation protocol that can achieve the homogenisation of the standard and test samples has been des

Fine particulate matter and ovarian health: A review of emerging risks.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution has raised significant public concerns, especially for vulnerable populations. Studies have indicated the association between PM2.5 and ovarian disorders, although the mechanisms underlying the effects have not yet been fully elucidated. In this review, we elucidated three main conditions pertaining to ovarian function that may result from exposure to PM2.5: diminished ovarian reserve, polycystic ovary syndrome, and infertility. Specific effects of ovarian disorders caused by PM2.5 are discussed, including reactive oxygen species, apoptosis, DNA damage

Calibration of low-cost particulate matter sensors for coal dust monitoring.

Mining-induced coal dust causes various respiratory diseases to mine workers mainly coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). Currently available underground monitors are expensive and bulky. These disadvantages limit them for regulatory sample monitoring purposes. Moreover, personal exposure levels for most miners remain unknown, risking them to potential overexposures. Low-cost light scattering particulate matter (PM) sensors offer a potential solution to this problem with the capability to characterize PM concentration with high spatio-temporal resolution. However, these sensors require precise c

Aerobic exercise ameliorates particulate matter-induced lung injury in aging rats.

Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is an inflammatory-inducing factor that is considered to be related to many adverse respiratory problems, especially in the elderly. This study aimed to examine whether pre-exercise training could prevent pulmonary injury induced by urban PM2.5 in aging rats and investigate its relationship with inflammatory pathways. Male Wistar rats (aged 16 months) were randomly divided into four groups: sedentary, exercise, sedentary + PM2.5 exposure, and exercise + PM2.5 exposure. All rats in exercise-related groups were treadmill-trained for 8 weeks (65%-75% VO2max for 30 m

microRNA expression profiles and personal monitoring of exposure to particulate matter.

An increasing number of findings from epidemiological studies support associations between exposure to air pollution and the onset of several diseases, including pulmonary, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, and malignancies. However, intermediate, and potentially mediating, biological mechanisms associated with exposure to air pollutants are largely unknown. Previous studies on the human exposome have shown that the expression of certain circulating microRNAs (miRNAs), regulators of gene expression, are altered upon exposure to traffic-related air pollutants. In the present study,

Protective Effect of GHX02 Extract on Particulate Matter-Induced Lung Injury.

Industrial development, along with the rapid growth of the economy, has greatly improved the quality of life in humans. Moreover, advancements in medical technology have increased life expectancy. Small particles increase airway inflammation when they penetrate the alveoli. We observed that GHX02 decreased the frequency and delayed the onset time of citric acid-induced coughing in guinea pigs. A phenol red secretion assay indicated that the GHX02 extract exhibits potent expectorant activity. The GHX02 extract also greatly reduced leukocyte levels. Our results indicate that GHX02 inhibits airwa

Achyranthis radix Extract Improves Urban Particulate Matter-Induced Dry Eye Disease.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial inflammatory disease that severely impairs patients' quality of life. Particulate matter comprises a harmful mixture of particles less than 10 μm in size, which on contact with the eye, causes inflammation in the cornea/conjunctival epithelium, threatening eye health and triggering the onset of DED. Achyranthis radix is an ingredient of traditional medicine generally used for treating osteoporosis, trauma, and thrombosis in Asian countries. However, the effect of Achyranthis radix on eye health has not been elucidated. In this study, we evaluate the pr
