Getting the Word Out: Teaching Middle-School Children about Cardiovascular Disease.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has roots in childhood; since CVD begins early, a clear strong case for early education focused on CVD primary prevention exists. Scientists are not traditionally involved in disseminating health knowledge into public education. Similarly, public school teachers typically do not have access to biomedical research that may increase their students' health science literacy. One way to bridge the 'cultural' gap between researchers and school teachers is to form science education partnerships. In order for such partnerships to be successful, teams of scientists and teac

Researcher-practitioner partnerships and in-school laboratories facilitate translational research in reading.

Educational neuroscience approaches have helped to elucidate the brain basis of Reading Disability (RD) and of reading intervention response; however, there is often limited translation of this knowledge to the broader scientific and educational communities. Moreover, this work is traditionally lab-based, and thus the underlying theories and research questions are siloed from classroom practices. With growing awareness of the neurobiological origins of RD and increasing popularity of putative "brain-based" approaches in clinics and classrooms, it is imperative that we create more direct and bi

Optimising partner notification outcomes for bacterial sexually transmitted infections: a deliberative process and consensus, United Kingdom, 2019.

Partner notification (PN) is an essential element of sexually transmitted infection (STI) control. It enables identification, treatment and advice for sexual contacts who may benefit from additional preventive interventions such as HIV pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis. PN is most effective in reducing STI transmission when it reaches individuals who are most likely to have an STI and to engage in sexual behaviour that facilitates STI transmission, including having multiple and/or new sex partners. Outcomes of PN practice need to be measurable in order to inform standards. They need to addres

Developing and Operationalizing an Academic Health Department Partnership: A Collaboration Between UTHealth Houston School of Public Health and Dallas County Health and Human Services.

CONTEXT: Academic Health Department (AHD) partnerships are increasingly recognized as a mechanism for strengthening public health education, workforce development, and applied research. While many schools of public health and local health departments have collaborated informally for decades, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed both the value and limitations of these informal arrangements. In Texas, sustained pandemic response efforts required frequent, high-stakes coordination between academic institutions and local health authorities, underscoring the need for more intentional and structured academ

Application of Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation Framework to the Development of Polycycstic Ovary Syndrome Guideline: A Case Study on Implementation.

Implementation of healthcare guidelines, a set of recommendations aiming to optimize patient care, can be a complex process which is at risk of poor translation into practice. Failure to adopt new evidence-based healthcare findings can contribute to a large variation in care, potentially affecting outcomes for service users. Designed to avoid this issue, the Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation (MCHRI) knowledge translation framework was created to support the development and future implementation of clinical practice guidelines. The framework is distinguished by a focus on met

Community partner perspectives on community-academic health research partnerships with Black American communities: A scoping review.

Evaluations of community-engaged research (CEnR) typically emphasize health outcomes rather than the partnership processes that contribute to intervention effectiveness. This scoping review synthesized community partner-identified strategies for successful community-academic health research partnerships with Black American communities and examined their alignment with the Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change (ERIC) taxonomy. This preregistered scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. PsycINFO and PubMed were searched in June 2024 without publication date restrictions. Eligi

Male partners of young women in Uganda: Understanding their relationships and use of HIV testing.

BACKGROUND: Substantial concern exists about the high risk of sexually transmitted HIV to adolescent girls and young women (AGYW, ages 15-24) in Eastern and Southern Africa. Yet limited research has been conducted with AGYW's male sexual partners regarding their perspectives on relationships and strategies for mitigating HIV risk. We sought to fill this gap in order to inform the DREAMS Partnership and similar HIV prevention programs in Uganda. METHODS: We conducted 94 in-depth interviews, from April-June 2017, with male partners of AGYW in three districts: Gulu, Mukono, and Sembabule. Men we
