Parvovirus B19 is a non-enveloped DNA virus of the Parvoviridae family, which usually causes erythema infectiosum in children. Although rare in adults, this virus can cause severe complications, including encephalitis. We report a case of a 50-year-old male patient, previously healthy, who was admitted to the hospital with high fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and rapidly progressing to impaired consciousness. The patient was intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation. A lumbar puncture was performed, which showed mild leukocytosis with normal protein and glucose levels, and negative cul

Adenoviruses (Adenoviridae) and their associated replication-deficient dependoparvoviruses (Parvoviridae) are recognized as significant components of the avian virome. While well-studied in domestic birds, these viruses remain underexplored in wild Antarctic birds. Information is limited on viruses circulating in penguins, particularly outside of the Antarctic Peninsula Region. Here we leverage a fecal sample collected for diet analyses to identify an aviadenovirus (37,731 nt) and two distinct dependoparvoviruses. The Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) feces-derived adenovirus exhibits a geno

Porcine parvovirus 5 (PPV5) is an unclassified member of the family Parvoviridae with no reported pathogenicity, although it is associated with multisystemic, reproductive, and respiratory diseases. Its open reading frame 1 (ORF1) encodes non-structural protein 1 (NS1), which is predicted to have helicase activity that is essential for viral replication. This protein contains a C-motif with an invariant asparagine residue that forms the core of the enzyme's active site, in conjunction with the Walker A and B motifs. The aim of this study was the phylogenetic and molecular characterization of t

A massive mortality event concerning farmed Chinese tongue soles occurred in Tianjin, China, and the causative agent remains unknown. Here, a novel Cynoglossus semilaevis papillomavirus (CsPaV) and parvovirus (CsPV) were simultaneously isolated and identified from diseased fish via electron microscopy, virus isolation, genome sequencing, experimental challenges, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Electron microscopy showed large numbers of virus particles present in the tissues of diseased fish. Viruses that were isolated and propagated in flounder gill cells (FG) induced typical c

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Viral infections are increasingly recognized in the etiology of psychiatric disorders based on epidemiological and serological studies. Few studies have analyzed viruses directly within the brain and no comprehensive investigation of viral infection within diseased brains has been completed. This study aims to determine whether viral infection in brain tissues is a risk factor for 3 major psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism spectrum disorder.
STUDY DESIGN: This study directly evaluated the presence of viral DNA or RNA in 1569

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is a single-stranded DNA dependovirus of the family of Parvoviridae that has promising features as a vector for somatic gene therapy. Different recombinant (r) AAV vectors have been generated that seem to have some advantages compared with other vector systems, such as the transduction of terminally differentiated and non-dividing cells, the lack of any apparent pathogenicity, low immunogenicity, relatively high stability of transgene expression, and the potential of targeted integration. Recent improvements in rAAV packaging should allow the generation of sufficie

Given that some DNA viruses have been found to exhibit virus-host co-evolution and establish lifelong infection, mammals with unique evolutionary histories in island ecosystems likely host exceptionally diverse viruses. Madagascar is inhabited by endemic non-human primate and rodent lineages interacting with expansive populations of introduced non-native rodents across the island. Using a viral metagenomic workflow on 189 oral swabs of lemurs and rodents in southeastern Madagascar, we characterized genomic sequences of DNA viruses in the families Adenoviridae, Circoviridae, Orthoherpesviridae,

INTRODUCTION: Viral diseases of pinnipeds cause substantial mortality and morbidity and can influence population demography. Viral metagenomic studies can therefore play an important role in pinniped health assessments and disease surveillance relevant to both individual species and in a "One Health" context.
METHODS: This study used a metagenomic approach with high throughput sequencing to make the first assessment of viral diversity in Caspian seals (Pusa caspica), the only marine mammal species endemic to the Caspian Sea.
RESULTS: Sequencing libraries from 35 seals sampled 2009-2020 were

Invasive species exert a serious impact on native fauna and flora and have become the target of eradication and management efforts worldwide. Invasive avian species can also be important pathogen reservoirs, although their viromes and microbiomes have rarely been studied. As one of the top 100 invasive pest species globally, the expansion of Indian mynas (Acridotheres tristis) into peri-urban and rural environments, in conjunction with increasing free-ranging avian agricultural practices, may increase the risk of microbial pathogens jumping species boundaries. Herein, we used a meta-transcript

The XVIII International Parvovirus Workshop took place in Rimini, Italy, from 14 to 17 June 2022 as an on-site event, continuing the series of meetings started in 1985 and continuously held every two years. The communications dealt with all aspects of research in the field, from evolution and structure to receptors, from replication to trafficking, from virus-host interactions to clinical and veterinarian virology, including translational issues related to viral vectors, gene therapy and oncolytic parvoviruses. The oral communications were complemented by a poster exhibition available for view

Most of the viruses known to be associated with anemia in human tend to persistently infect their host and are noncytopathic or poorly cytopathic for blood cell progenitors. Infections with Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, varicella-zoster virus, human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6), B19 parvovirus, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis A and C viruses and the putative viral agent associated with non-A-G post-hepatitis aplastic anemia have been reported in association with anemia. Nevertheless, a direct cytotoxic effect on erythroid progenitors has been clearly demonstrated only for human parvov

Baijiu fermentation represents a sophisticated microbial-driven biochemical process mediated by complex microbial consortium. Despite extensive characterization of bacterial and fungal roles in fermentation systems, the virus remains a critical knowledge gap. In this study,we employed metagenomics to profile the dynamics of viral community in fermented grains across five stages (day 0, 5, 10, 20 and 30) of a Baijiu fermentation. The metagenomics revealed 101 viral families, dominated by Metaviridae, Parvoviridae, Aliceevansviridae, Herelleviridae, Geminiviridae, Iridoviridae, and Genomoviridae

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a human pathogen from the Parvoviridae family that primarily targets and replicates in erythroid progenitor cells (EPCs). While its symptoms are typically self-limiting in healthy individuals, B19V can cause or exacerbate autoimmune diseases in vulnerable patients. This review integrates the involvement of B19V in the development and worsening of several autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), hematological disorders (thalassemia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia), vasculitis, antiph

BACKGROUND: In Brazil the implementation of the Sentinel Surveillance System of Influenza began in 2000. Central public health laboratories use reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) for diagnosis of respiratory viruses, but this protocol identifies only specific targets, resulted in inconclusive diagnosis for many samples. Thus, high-throughput sequencing (HTS) would be complementary method in the identification of pathogens in inconclusive samples for RT-qPCR or other specific detection protocols.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to detect unidentified viruses us

The Brazilian Cerrado fauna shows very wide diversity and can be a potential viral reservoir. Therefore, the animal's susceptibility to some virus can serve as early warning signs of potential human virus diseases. Moreover, the wild animal virome of this biome is unknown. Based on this scenario, high-throughput sequencing contributes a robust tool for the identification of known and unknown virus species in this environment. In the present study, faeces samples from cerrado birds (Psittacara leucophthalmus, Amazona aestiva, and Sicalis flaveola) and mammals (Didelphis albiventris, Sapajus lib

Cynomolgus macaques are common across South East Asian countries including Thailand. The National Primate Research Center of Thailand, Chulalongkorn University (NPRCT-CU) captures wild-borne cynomolgus macaque for research use. Limited information is available on the enteric viruses and possible zoonotic infections into or from cynomolgus macaques. We characterized and compare the fecal virome of two populations; healthy wild-originated captive cynomolgus macaques (n = 43) reared in NPRCT-CU and healthy wild cynomolgus macaques (n = 35). Over 90% of recognized viral sequence reads amplified fr

In the spring and summer of 1988, two separate outbreaks of an illness with a rash resembling erythema infectiosum occurred among members of the nursing staff of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The sources were two adolescent patients with sickle cell disease and aplastic crisis who had unsuspected parvovirus infection. Tests for IgM and IgG antibodies to parvovirus B19 were positive in both patients, and electron microscopical examination showed parvovirus-like particles in the early serum samples. Of 40 health care workers exposed to infected patients, 12 (30 percent) were infected,

In two children with acute lymphocytic leukaemia in whom severe anaemia developed, serum samples collected over 9-12 months showed high concentrations of B19 parvovirus, the aertiological agent of fifth disease. In one patient, anaemia recurred with the reappearance of virus in serum; in the other, the anaemia persisted. Smears of bone marrow aspirates obtained during periods of viraemia showed giant pronormoblasts and either absent mature erythroid cells or erythroid hypoplasia. Parvovirus replication in the marrow was detected by Southern blot of cellular DNA. An underlying immune deficit wa

The association of parvovirus B19 infection and hydrops fetalis is well known. However, the association of parvovirus and fetal pleural or pericardial effusions has not been reported. We present five cases of isolated pleural or pericardial effusion with documented maternal parvovirus infection in four of these pregnancies. In the absence of structural or karyotypic abnormalities, spontaneous resolution of the effusion portends for a successful pregnancy outcome.
