Non-immune hydrops fetalis represents a diagnostic challenge in high-risk pregnant women. Vertical infection with human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a possible cause. National guidelines propose maternal serologic screening (IgG/IgM), which may be insufficient in some situations. We report a case of vertical B19V infection with difficulties in prenatal diagnosis. Preterm newborn, normal weight (2950 g), born to a 30-year-old mother with anemia and hydrops fetalis (week 17). Cardiac, chromosomal, isoimmunization-Rh, and usual infectious causes (TORCH) were ruled out. Maternal serology for B19V show

Long-term immunosuppressant use in renal transplant recipients leads to dampened immune function and high susceptibility to opportunistic pathogens. Recently, the incidence of human parvovirus B19 (HPV-B19) infection after renal transplantation has increased, which may lead to pure red cell aplasia (PRCA), affect graft function, and lead to renal injury. After renal transplantation, the clinical manifestations of HPV-B19 infection are atypical, challenging the diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, we aimed to provide a comprehensive review of the existing literature to aid in the diagnosis and t

Human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) is a small single strand DNA virus distributed throughout the world, with its encoded products being three known proteins. There is conclusive evidence that PVB19 infection is a crucial inducement of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), myasthenia gravis (MG) and other autoimmune diseases (AIDs). Recent studies have confirmed that anti-B19-VP1u-IgG antibody is able to increase the activity of cytokines such as interleukin 1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9); PVB19 prote

BACKGROUND: The etiology of the Behçet disease (BD) has remained obscured. There have been studies to show the association of BD to infections like herpes simplex, hepatitis, and parvovirus B19 however, the findings are rather controversial.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We selected 55 patients with the best matched symptoms of BD and measured the loads of B19 DNA in their plasma by quantitative real time PCR and verified their seropositivity by ELISA. All findings were compared to the results from 42 healthy persons.
RESULTS: Patients showed a wide spectrum of BD symptoms. Serologic studies showed

While the systemic disorders associated with measles, mumps, and rubella viruses and human parvovirus B19 tend to be mild, each virus can produce potentially life-threatening neurologic disease in human hosts, especially when these viruses infect young children. Two of the viruses, rubella and parvovirus B19, can be vertically transmitted to fetuses during maternal infection and cause congenital infection. Neurologic complications are common after intrauterine infection with the rubella virus, a condition known as the congenital rubella syndrome. Two, measles and rubella viruses, can induce "s

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how often chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) appears after human parvovirus B19 (B19) infection and whether prolonged B19 viremia or some other factors cause CFS.
OBJECTIVES: To determine how often CFS appears after B19 infection and whether prolonged B19 DNA presence, antibody production and persistently reduced complement levels occur in CFS patients after B19 infection.
METHODS: Clinical findings were examined in 210 patients after B19 infection, and CH50, C3 and C4 levels were determined. B19 DNA and antibodies to B19 were also tested in 38 patients' sera including

A previously healthy two-year-old girl presented with proteinuria and macroscopic haematuria. Laboratory findings included haemolytic anaemia with thrombocytopenia. Interestingly, continuing reticulocytopenia was noted. Therefore an acute parvovirus B19 infection was suspected, which could be confirmed by serological and molecularbiological evidence. This case report underlines renal complications of parvovirus B19 infection in early childhood including haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS)-like episodes, and potential pathogenetic mechanisms are discussed.

Parvovirus B19 is a DNA virus responsible for a wide spectrum of clinical illnesses. Among dermatological manifestations, the most common is erythema infectiosum, also known as the fifth disease. In 1990 Harms et al first described a papular-purpuric gloves and socks syndrome (PPGSS) due to parvovirus B19. It is an acute acral dermatosis characterized by an eruption of petechiae and small purpuric papules affecting the hands and feet in a gloves-and-socks distribution. Recently it was observed that PPGSS may be associated with involvement of the peri-oral region and the chin (acropetechial syn

BACKGROUND: Human parvovirus B19 is a small, single-stranded DNA virus encoding two structural capsid proteins and a nonstructural protein. It is the aetiological agent of erythema infectiosum and transient aplastic crisis in patients with haemolytic anaemia, and has been associated with fetal death, arthritis and chronic anaemia. In recent years, the possible involvement of parvovirus B19 in systemic sclerosis (SSc) has been reported.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether human parvovirus B19 DNA can be detected in SSc skin tissue specimens.
METHODS: Normal subjects (n = 97) and patients with SS

Parvovirus B19 elicits both humoral and cellular immune responses. Recently some advances have been made in determining the frequencies, peptide targets and function of virus-specific CD8+ T lymphocyte responses. A single HLA B35-restricted epitope derived from the NS1 protein has been studied so far, but others clearly exist. Surprisingly large, persistent responses have been detected in healthy seropositive individuals, using interferon-gamma ELISpot assays and HLA class I peptide tetramers. Similar techniques are available for exploration of the CD4+ T cell epitopes, although less detail is

Our objective is to report our experience with cases of prolonged recovery from nonimmune hydrops secondary to human parvovirus B19 infection occurring after intrauterine transfusion. We reviewed cases referred to our unit over a 10 year period for exposure to parvovirus B19 infection. Those cases with serologic evidence of recent infection were identified. The cases requiring intrauterine transfusion were reviewed for demographic details, time of exposure, parvovirus B19 serology, gestational age at detection of nonimmune hydrops, number and results of fetal blood samples, duration from intra

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study was designed to determine the incidence of B19 associated with idiopathic nonimmune hydrops fetalis by use of a sensitive molecular tool, the polymerase chain reaction assay.
STUDY DESIGN: Placental and fetal tissues from 57 cases of nonimmune hydrops fetalis were analyzed for B19 deoxyribonucleic acid. Thirty-four of these cases were classified as idiopathic. The remaining 23 cases had known, noninfectious-based causes.
RESULTS: Eighteen percent of all cases (6/34) of idiopathic nonimmune hydrops fetalis contained B19 deoxyribonucleic acid. In contrast, n

CONTEXT: Human parvovirus B19 (B19) is a common infection that typically causes mild symptoms but can cause severe fetal complications among pregnant individuals. There are limited data to inform public health responses because B19 is not a reportable disease.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to estimate the burden of B19-related pregnancy complications and impact of increasing B19 detection in both Minnesota and the United States using electronic health record data and scenario modeling.
DESIGN: To estimate the burden of B19-related complications for the United States (4 000 000 annual pregnancies), a

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a human pathogen from the Parvoviridae family that primarily targets and replicates in erythroid progenitor cells (EPCs). While its symptoms are typically self-limiting in healthy individuals, B19V can cause or exacerbate autoimmune diseases in vulnerable patients. This review integrates the involvement of B19V in the development and worsening of several autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), hematological disorders (thalassemia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia), vasculitis, antiph

The role of parvovirus B19 (PVB19) in the pathogenesis of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) remains poorly understood. Therefore, we have measured the levels of inflammation, fibrosis, apoptosis, and necrosis in endomyocardial biopsies (EMBs) and sera of nonischemic PVB19-positive (n = 14) and PVB19-negative (n = 18) DCM patients. Chronic persistence of PVB19 in myocardium did not induce significant infiltration of T cells (CD3 and CD45Ro) and macrophages (CD68), and did not secrete TNFα, IL-6, and CRB. The fibrosis in PVB19-positive EMBs was also lower compared to the virus-negative one

Human parvovirus B19 (B19), a human pathogen of the erythroparvovirus genus, is responsible for a variety of diseases. B19 cause less symptoms in healthy individuals, also cause acute and chronic anemia in immunodeficiency patients. Transient aplastic crisis and pure red cell aplasia are two kinds of anemic hemogram, respectively, in acute and chronic B19 infection phase, especially occurring in patients with a shortened red cell survival or with immunodeficiency. In addition, B19-infected pregnant women may cause hydrops fetalis or fetal loss. B19 possesses high affinity to bone marrow and fe

Infection with human parvovirus B19 (B19V) has been associated with a myriad of illnesses, including erythema infectiosum (Fifth disease), hydrops fetalis, arthropathy, hepatitis, and cardiomyopathy, and also possibly the triggering of any number of different autoimmune diseases. B19V NS1 is a multidomain protein that plays a critical role in viral replication, with predicted nuclease, helicase, and gene transactivation activities. Herein, we investigate the biochemical activities of the nuclease domain (residues 2-176) of B19V NS1 (NS1-nuc) in sequence-specific DNA binding of the viral origin
