Thirty-four rat carcases from 11 poultry farms were examined for the presence of Pasteurella multocida; 14 out of 34 (41 per cent) proved positive after mouse inoculation, compared with five out of 34 (14 per cent) using media alone. No salmonellae were recovered from 27 rat carcases using enrichment media. Poultry pasteurellosis was present on two farms with infected rats and the same serotype was present in rats and poultry in those cases.

Pasteurella haemolytica (biotype A, serotype 1) isolates (n = 15) from the upper respiratory tract of clinically normal cattle, as well as from lung lesions from cases of fatal bovine pasteurellosis, were examined for the presence of bacteriophage after irradiation with UV light. Treatment of all P haemolytica isolates with UV irradiation resulted in lysis of bacteria due to the induction of vegetative development of bacteriophages. The extent of growth inhibition and bacterial lysis in irradiated cultures was UV dose-dependent. Bacterial cultures exposed to UV light for 20 s reached peak cult

Pasteurella multocida infects a wide range of animals, causing hemorrhagic septicemia or infectious pneumonia. Iron is an essential nutrient for growth, colonization, and proliferation of P. multocida during infection of the host, and competition for iron ions in the host is a critical link in the pathogenesis of this pathogen. In recent years, there has been significant progress in the study of the iron uptake system of P. multocida, including its occurrence and regulatory mechanisms. In order to provide a systematic theoretical basis for the study of the molecular pathogenesis of the P. mult

Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative coccobacillus commonly associated with soft tissue and skin infections. On rare occasions, it may result in systemic bacteremia and sepsis. Our case describes a 59-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with septic shock. Physical examination was remarkable for bilateral lower extremity wounds which were in recent contact with feline oral secretions. Blood cultures were obtained and resulted in the growth of P. multocida after 48 hours. His treatment involved intravenous antibiotics and supportive care. After finishing his two-week cour

Pasteurella species are gram-negative bacilli found in healthy pets' oropharynx and gastrointestinal tract flora. In humans, skin and soft tissue infections develop most frequently with the bite or scratching of animals such as cats or dogs. At the same time, they cause infections in the respiratory tract, mainly in patients with chronic lung disease or immunosuppressive patients. In this case report, a rare case of pneumonia caused by P.multocida bacteria in a patient with bronchiectasis was presented. A young male patient was admitted to the emergency department of our hospital with complain

Pasteurella multocida is a common commensal microorganism found in the nasopharynx of domestic and wild animals. Humans acquire P multocida infection primarily through contact with animals or their mucous secretions. P multocida is infrequently encountered in clinical settings, and it is considered as a zoonotic pathogen. In this study, we present an interesting case of septic arthritis and bacteremia caused by P multocida in a 62-year-old patient. The patient was treated with surgical procedures and antibiotic therapy, which made significant improvement. This case study highlights the importa

Pasteurella multocida is a bacterial pathogen with the ability to infect a multitude of hosts including humans, companion animals, livestock, and wildlife. This study used bioinformatic approaches to explore the genomic diversity of 656 P. multocida isolates and epidemiological associations between host factors and specific genotypes. Isolates included in this study originated from a variety of hosts, including poultry, cattle, swine, rabbits, rodents, and humans, from five different continents. Multi-locus sequence typing identified 69 different sequence types. In-silico methodology for deter

BACKGROUND: Humans can also be infrequent infected by Pasteurella bettyae. We report the first association of P. bettyae with urethritis and balanitis in men who have sex with men practicing unprotected intercourse.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The standard culture for bacteria and fungi in genital samples, and a PCR study for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, Mycoplasma spp. and Ureaplasma spp, were performed. Cultured microorganisms were identified by Maldi-Tof mass spectrometry and the susceptibility of the isolates were evaluated with the gradient test.

Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of a wide range of disease (pasteurellosis) and a zoonotic pathogen in humans. Some pathogenic bacteria are able to exploit host plasminogen for migration across tissue barriers or evade from host innate immunity. However, there is no study on host plasminogen exploitation of P. multocida. Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) has been reported to be a plasminogen receptor in many pathogenic bacteria, but its role in P. multocida exploiting plasminogen has not yet been characterized. The aim of this study was to detect the activity of P.

This report presents a case of progressive septic arthritis and osteomyelitis caused by a rare pathogen, Pasteurella multocida, thought to be provoked by the use of systemic corticosteroids. Despite initial improvement after antibiotics and surgical procedure, the patient returned with new, associated symptoms 1 month later. This concurrent set of circumstances leading to a life-threatening condition has not been reported, to the best of our knowledge. Physicians aware of such a case will be better prepared to diagnose, treat, and educate their patients. Additionally, the diagnostic challenge

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is a commensal organism present in the oral cavities of many animals. It can cause various infections including soft tissue, joint, and respiratory infections in human beings, but intra-abdominal infection by P. multocida is rare. We report our experience with a case of acute cholecystitis with bacteremia caused by P. multocida.
CASE REPORT: The patient was a 39-year-old female who underwent emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis. The patient's blood and bile cultures were positive for P. multocida. She kept a dog and a cat as pets, bu

Pasteurella multocida has been recognized as a contributor to debilitating and fatal porcine pneumonia for at least 120 years and there continues to be sustained, unabated high prevalence of the organism in cases submitted for diagnostic work up. Understanding of its role in disease has been limited, in part because of difficulty in reproducing the disease experimentally with capsular type A strains of P. multocida, the predominant type associated with porcine pneumonia. This limitation has stymied the development of improved methods for disease control. In this review, the reports of efforts

Pasteurella gallinarum-related outbreaks in chickens and African guinea fowls are described. Four outbreaks were recorded in chickens and one in guinea fowls. Periorbital swelling and keratoconjunctivitis were the consistently present clinical signs in all the diseased birds. In several, swollen hocks and wattles were also discerened. Birds which succumbed to the infection showed petechiation in the internal organs and evidence of airsacculitis. Pasteurella gallinarum was isolated from the lesions and also from conjunctival swabs of the apparently healthy in-contact birds. There was no evidenc

Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of fowl cholera and other diseases of production animals. Isolates are classified into five groups based on capsular antigens and into 16 serotypes based on LPS antigens. Strains causing fowl cholera are most frequently designated A:1, A:3 or A:4. Whole cell bacterins can provide some degree of protection, but only against the homologous LPS serotype. There is good evidence that cross-protective antigens are expressed only under in vivo conditions. Empirically derived, live, attenuated vaccines can protect against heterologous serotypes, but because

Several case reports attest to the pathogenicity of Pasteurella multocida in raptors; however, the pathologic syndromes have not been fully described. We describe here the lesions encountered in 22 avian cholera cases in raptors. Besides septicemia-related lesions, a unique syndrome of esophageal abscesses was noted in 8 of the 11 (73%) Buteo hawks that succumbed to avian cholera. Esophageal abscesses were not noted in birds belonging to the order Strigiformes (owls) or family Falconidae (falcons and their relatives). Thus, the presence of white plaques in both the oropharynx and esophagus of

The clinical efficacy of doxycycline (Doxycen, Cenavisa, Spain), a long-acting preparation, was evaluated for treatment of Pasteurella haemolytica infection in 6 goats. One goat was not infected and served as a control. The disease was induced by intratracheal inoculation of 10(7) to 10(9) cfu of P. haemolytica. Confirmation of respiratory disease was based on evidence of appropriate clinical signs. Before and after initiation of doxycycline treatment on day 10, each goat was examined daily. Three clinical responses to doxycycline treatment were noted. Mean rectal temperatures decreased from 4
