The efficacy of doxycycline was investigated in two sets of experiments. In the first experiment 40, in the second experiment 60, hence altogether 100 five-week-old Ross broilers of both sexes were used. The birds were randomly allocated into groups (A and B in experiment 1; A, B and C in experiment 2) of 20 birds in each. All birds were infected intramuscularly with approx. 2 x 10(3) colony forming units of Pasteurella multocida strain X-73 (serotype A:1). Birds in groups A were non-medicated controls. Chickens in groups B were given doxycycline via the drinking water at a dose of 10 mg/kg bo

The purpose of this study was to determine if parainfluenza-3 virus in calves interfered with normal pulmonary bacterial clearance. Three groups (A, B and C) of four calves each were exposed to an aerosol of parainfluenza-3 virus. Three days later the four hour pulmonary clearance of Pasteurella hemolytica was determined on the first group (A), seven days later on the second (B) and 11 days later on the third (C). Group A had a mean pulmonary bacterial retention of 3.6 +/- 3.5%. Group B was 83.1 +/- 35.9% and Group C was 41.2 +/- 30.9%. The results demonstrate that parainfluenza-3 virus interf

Pasteurella multocida is a small Gram-negative organism that usually causes a localized infection after exposure to cat or dog scratches, bites, or licking wounds. Invasive infections, such as bacteremia and endocarditis, are very rare yet serious conditions that are associated with high morbidity and mortality, particularly in patients with major comorbidities. Here, we report a case of a 47-year-old male who presented to the hospital with altered mental status two weeks after a fall and was found to have a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Further workup revealed Pasteurella multocida bacteremia and

Background: Immunity against Pasteurella spp. is not well-known for humans. Methods: We've tested T CD8+ lymphocytes in a patient with a chronic prosthetic joint infection due to Pasteurella spp. to search for a deficit which could have favored her infection. As this deficit was found, we've searched for such a deficit in other patients with Pasteurella spp. Infections, either acute or subacute. Results: Eight patients were tested and all had a persistent T CD8+ lymphocytes deficit. This is striking as these cells are involved in the response to this type of infection in animal models. Neurologic diseases are common in domestic cats, and infectious agents are suspected to be the primary cause in 30-45% of cases. Among infectious etiologies, those of bacterial origin are only sporadically characterized in the literature, with few of these reports correlating gross and histologic findings with confirmatory bacteriologic identification. Here, we describe bacterial meningitis and meningoencephalomyelitis associated with Pasteurella multocida in 3 domestic cats. Purulent exudate expanding the cerebral meninges was grossly evident in 2 of the cases. In all 3 cases, histologic chan

Pasteurella multocida , a zoonotic infectious pathogen, is a rare cause of mycotic aneurysms in human hosts. A 76-year-old man was admitted at our emergency unit for a superinfection of his right limb. The patient was initially treated for a knee arthritis. After a first-line antibiotherapy, the patient was referred to the vascular department for the management of a right acute limb ischemia. The work-up revealed a ruptured pseudoaneurysm of the popliteal artery. The ruptured artery was surgically explanted, and a femoropopliteal bypass was then performed. Pasteurella multocida was detected af

A 75-year-old woman was admitted into the intensive care unit, with severe sepsis and renal failure. She developed purpura fulminans (PF) of bilateral upper and lower extremities along with gangrene on the tips of her fingers and toes. Blood cultures confirmed Pasteurella multocida as the causative organism. Despite aggressive supportive measures, the patient remained dependent on high doses of vasopressors and the gangrene progressed. She ultimately succumbed to her underlying severe sepsis. PF is a rare and fatal dermatological emergency commonly seen in children, but it also occurs in adult

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is a well-recognized zoonotic agent following dog or cat bites or scratches. Nevertheless, prosthetic joint infection caused by P. multocida are rarely reported.
METHOD: We report here a series of six cases of prosthetic joint infection caused by P. multocida managed at a referral centre for the treatment of bone and joint infection in southern France. We also reviewed the 26 cases reported in literature.
RESULTS: The mean age of our cases was 74 years [±8.2, range 63-85]. In majority of our cases (5 cases) were associated with knee prostheses and one case w

Pasteurella multocida is a small Gram-negative bacterium comprising part of the normal gastrointestinal and nasopharyngeal flora of domestic pets, such as dogs and cats. It rarely causes infection in humans. Previous reports of P multocida causing prosthetic joint infection have described either haematogenous spread of infection from a distant site through a scratch or bite, or reactivation of infection from a previous injury. We report a case of acute total knee arthroplasty joint infection becoming acutely infected by P multocida. We postulate that the mechanism of infection was direct conta

Pasteurella multocida is a bacterial organism that commonly causes cellulitis after animal bites, especially cat bites. We report an unusual vesiculopustular infection of the hand following a domestic cat bite. Pasteurella multocida and Staphylococcus aureus were cultured from the wound and the patient was treated with amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium. Further history revealed that the patient's cat had nibbled on her hand. Pasteurella usually is resistant to many of the typical empiric antibiotics used to treat skin infections. Amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium (500 mg 3 times daily) is the

Seven 18-wk-old pullets from a commercial layer flock experiencing increased mortality associated with neurologic and respiratory symptoms were submitted to the California Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System at the Turlock Branch for necropsy. Clinical signs included depression, torticollis, swollen eyelids, conjunctivitis, and sinusitis. Meningoencephalitis and suppurative inflammation of the cranial air spaces were found on histopathology. The brain, sinuses, and air spaces of the cranium were infected with Pasteurella multocida. Complicating the condition was Mycoplasma gallisepticum in

Pasteurella multocida, a small gram-negative bacterium, is part of the normal mouth flora of many animals, including domestic cats and dogs. While commonly associated with infections in animals, it is a rare cause of human disease. The majority of Pasteurella infections in humans occur with percutaneous inoculation of the organism following a bite by a cat or dog, although disease without antecedent animal exposure or with causal animal contact does occur. The spectrum of disease produced ranges from localized, including abscess, cellulitis, lymphadenopathy, and osteomyelitis, to systemic, wit

Pasteurella multocida is a zoonotic Gram-negative coccobacillus commonly associated with animal bites and capable of causing invasive disease. We retrospectively analysed five culture-confirmed P. multocida infections at a tertiary care centre in South India between 2018 and 2024. Clinical presentations included cellulitis, abscess, diabetic foot osteomyelitis, preseptal cellulitis, and necrotizing fasciitis. Animal exposure was documented in three patients, while two had no identifiable exposure. All patients received appropriate antimicrobial therapy and achieved favourable outcomes. This se

BACKGROUND: There is limited data regarding the sources of human Pasteurella multocida infection, characteristics of infected populations, and the antibiotic resistance patterns of human strains.
METHODS: Through the multi-database platforms, we conducted a comprehensive review and analysis of 482 reported cases of Pasteurella multocida from the world since from 1964 to 2023, including the sources of infection, sex and age distribution of infected individuals, and the clinical manifestations of infection in different age groups. Additionally, we evaluated the antibiotic susceptibility of diff

Pyogenic granuloma is a benign vascular lesion that sometimes originates from the inferior turbinate. We report a case of a 57-year-old man with a pyogenic granuloma arising from the right inferior turbinate that caused secondary sinusitis with symptoms resembling chronic rhinosinusitis. The patient had a domestic cat and frequently allowed the cat to lick his face. Endoscopic examination revealed a large nasal lesion covered with purulent exudate, and the lesion was surgically resected at its pedicle. Tissue culture yielded Pasteurella multocida and Group G Streptococcus, indicating secondary

The bacterial agent that causes fowl cholera, Pasteurella multocida, was isolated from two deceased wild waterbirds in Victoria, Australia, in 2013. Whole genome sequence analysis placed the isolates into ST20, a subtype described in farmed chickens from Queensland, Australia and more recently in feedlot cattle and in pigs across a broader area of the continent. This study also found ST20 between 2009 and 2022 on three chicken farms and two turkey farms located in four Australian states. The sequences of 25 of these ST20 isolates were compared to 280 P. multocida genomes from 23 countries and

Pasteurella multocida can cause goat hemorrhagic sepsis and endemic pneumonia. Respiratory epithelial cells are the first line of defense in the lungs during P. multocida infection. These cells act as a mechanical barrier and activate immune response to protect against invading pathogenic microorganisms. Upon infection, P. multocida adheres to the cells and causes changes in cell morphology and transcriptome. ATAC-seq was conducted to determine the changes in the chromatin open region of P. multocida-infected goat bronchial epithelial cells based on transcriptional regulation. A total of 13,07
