Acute meningoencephalomyelitis in a rabbit infected with Pasteurella multocida.

Pasteurella multocida was isolated in pure culture from the optic chiasm of a rabbit that was euthanatized subsequent to acute development of neurological signs. Histopathologically, there was meningoencephalomyelitis, bilateral otitis interna, retrobulbar cellulitis, optic neuritis and iritis. The ocular involvement, severity of the spinal lesions and the lack of otitis media was unusual.

The inefficacy of polivalent Pasteurella multocida vaccines for sheep.

Immunity assays on sheep sera using passive mouse protection tests showed that vaccines containing more than 4 strains of Pasteurella multocida did not give a good immunity. The immune response was not enhanced by the use of an oil adjuvant, and high concentrations of bacteria had only a partial positive effect. Attempts to extract selectively the protection-inducing antigen(s) from P. multocida by veronal, phenol or potassium thiocyanate extraction were unsuccessful. Furthermore, it was found that sheep antisera to the recognized type strains of P. multocida afforded only limited protection a

Pasteurella multocida infection of cats on poultry farms.

Eight cats on six poultry farms, four of which had a history of recent turkey pasteurellosis were examined for Pasteurella multocida infection. Nine strains were recovered and serotyped and of these five were tested for virulence in chickens and mice. By comparison with a strain from a field outbreak in turkeys three cat strains were considered capable of causing poultry disease. These findings are discussed epidemiologically.

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Pasteurella haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida isolated from pneumonic ovine lungs.

The in vitro susceptibilities of Pasteurella haemolytica biotypes A and T and P multocida from pneumonic ovine lungs to penicillin, ampicillin, oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, kanamycin, neomycin, gentamicin, streptomycin and lincomycin were determined by the disk diffusion method. All the isolates were sensitive to chloramphenicol and resistant to lincomycin. The isolates of P haemolytica biotype A were consistently more sensitive to penicillin, ampicillin, oxytetracycline, erythromycin and streptomycin than those of biotype T.

Multiple drug resistance in Pasteurella multocida and Pasteurella haemolytica from cattle and swine.

The results of antimicrobial susceptibility testing on 262 strains of Pasteurella multocida and 141 strains of Pasteurella haemolytica isolated from cattle and swine from 1971 to 1974 were analyzed for patterns of resistance to streptomycin, penicillin, tetracycline, and chloramphenicol, using a modified Kirby-Bauer procedure. Resistance was recorded for 80.5% of the isolants of P multocida and 92.2% of those of P haemolytica. Resistance to streptomycin was most frequent, followed by resistance to penicillin and tetracycline. Most cultures of P multocida and P haemolytica were susceptible to c

Sepsis-induced purpura fulminans caused by Pasteurella multocida.

A 52-year-old man was admitted with a cutaneous rash associated with septic shock and multiorganic failure, 6 days after a dog bite. He was started on empiric antibiotherapy and supportive measures. The patient's condition aggravated, with need for invasive mechanical ventilation and intermittent haemodialysis, and evolution from a petechiae-like rash to purpura and gangrene, culminating in bilateral lower limb amputation. The blood cultures revealed only Pasteurella multocida, after 10 days of incubation. P multocida infection is a rare cause of soft tissue infection that subsides with oral a

[Human respiratory tract infection by Pasteurella multocida subsp. multocida presumably derived from the cat].

Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative short rod-shaped bacteria that has been recognized as a pathogen of hemorrhagic septicemia and fowl cholera in the veterinary medicine. Infections by this microorganism as seen in the foreign literature vary widely from local infections due to bites and scratches by animals to general infections such as infections of the respiratory tract, sepsis, and meningitis. In Japan, reported cases of P. multocida infections are predominantly local infections, followed by respiratory infection. Recently, death of diabetic patients due to septicemia by this pathoge

Bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis: model for Pasteurella haemolytica- and Pasteurella multocida-induced pneumonia in cattle.

Pneumonic lesions in calves were induced with Pasteurella haemolytica or P multocida. The inoculum, consisting of a suspension of either organism, was administered by transthoracic intrapulmonic injection to 23 calves. Three died of septicemia; the 20 remaining, killed 96 hours after inoculation, had an expanding unifocal pneumonia qualitatively comparable with that of acute pneumonic pasteurellosis (shipping fever). The concentration of bacteria that consistently produced a lesion was a 5-ml volume containing 10(9) colony-forming units of bacteria; a concentration of 10(6) colony-forming unit

Characterization of Pasteurella multocida type B capsule biosynthesis proteins.

Pasteurella multocida causes several severe animal diseases, including hemorrhagic septicemia in ungulates. Strains of P. multocida are differentiated into five capsular and nine lipopolysaccharide genotypes. To date, only P. multocida strains that produce capsule types B and E have been recovered from cases of hemorrhagic septicemia. The structure of the type B capsule has recently been determined to be a repeating main chain of N-acetyl glucosamine (GlcNAc) and N-acetyl mannosaminuronic acid (ManNAcA), with a fructose and glycine side chain. In this study, we investigated the role of protein

Antimicrobial resistance and genomic characteristics of avian Pasteurella multocida.

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida, the cause of fowl cholera, poses a significant economic threat to poultry. The escalation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in this pathogen, driven by drug misuse, is a serious concern. Crucially, a comprehensive understanding of AMR patterns, molecular epidemiology, and virulence in Chinese avian strains is still lacking. This study aimed to elucidate the phenotypic and genomic characteristics of P. multocida strains isolated from avian in Zhejiang Province, China. RESULT: Twenty avian-origin P. multocida strains isolated in Zhejiang Province were subjecte

RACK1 mediates NLRP3 inflammasome activation during Pasteurella multocida infection.

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative bacterium that causes serious diseases in a wide range of animal species. Inflammasomes are intracellular multimolecular protein complexes that play a critical role in host defence against microbial infection. Our previous study showed that bovine P. multocida type A (PmCQ2) infection induces NLRP3 inflammasome activation. However, the exact mechanism underlying PmCQ2-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation is not clear. Here, we show that NLRP3 inflammasome activation is positively regulated by a scaffold protein called receptor for activated C kinase 1

Lower respiratory infection in humans caused by pasteurella multocida.

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella (P.) multocida commonly occurs in the upper respiratory tract of healthy domestic pets, especially cats and dogs. People become infected by biting, scratching or direct contact with the animal's saliva. Inflammation develops in the wound and limits itself to the skin and subcutaneous tissue. P. multocida may cause respiratory tract infections and severe life-threatening complications. The study aimed to identify the lower respiratory infection in humans caused by P. multocida, to determine the potential source of infection and the associated symptoms, comorbidities and

Psoas Abscess Precipitated by an Uncommon Pathogen: Pasteurella multocida.

A psoas abscess is a rare infection; it is an accumulation of purulent material within the psoas muscle. Common pathogens include Staphylococcus aureus, streptococci, Escherichia coli, and other enteric Gram-negative bacilli and anaerobes. These abscesses are thought to occur by either hematogenous spread, contiguous spread from adjacent organs, trauma, or local inoculation. Pasteurella multocida is a pathogen that usually infects a patient via a bite or scratch from dogs or cats and causes cellulitis at the site of the injury. Pasteurella multocida may also cause infection by the colonization
