Part of a ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) cistron of Haemophilus ducreyi was enzymically amplified using conserved primers within the rRNA molecules, cloned in a plasmid vector, and sequenced. From the nucleotide sequence, eight oligonucleotides complementary to different regions in the 16S and 23S rRNA molecules were selected, chemically synthesized, and used as hybridization probes. Hybridization experiments with at least 41 H. ducreyi strains and 13 or 14 non-H. ducreyi strains revealed that all eight oligonucleotide probes were highly reliable and completely specific for H. ducreyi strai

Continued investigation into the bacteria associated with non-domestic animals provides important information for recognizing normal flora, assessing the health status of these unique species of animals, and identifying new or emerging pathogens of concern. In this summary of novel taxa and taxonomic revisions, considerable additions have been made toward understanding fecal and mucosal flora in multiple wild animal species. In addition, novel pathogenic bacteria are discussed, including multiple Chlamydia spp. causing disease in a hawk and crocodile, two Corynebacterium spp. causing oral lesi

Avibacterium paragallinarum is the pathogen involved in infectious coryza (IC), an acute infectious upper respiratory disease in chickens. The prevalence of IC has increased in China in recent years. There is a lack of reliable and effective procedures for gene manipulation, which has limited the research on the bacterial genetics and pathogenesis of A. paragallinarum. Natural transformation has been developed as a method of gene manipulation in Pasteurellaceae by the introduction of foreign genes or DNA fragments into bacterial cells, but there has been no report on natural transformation in

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is an oral pathogen causing periodontal disease and bacterial endocarditis. It produces cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) that could damage mammalian cells and tissues. CDT is a tripartite protein toxin composed of CdtA, CdtB, and CdtC. We have previously indicated that CdtA is a lipoprotein and that the proteolytic processing of CdtA is important for biogenesis and secretion of CDT holotoxin. Here, we established an in vitro processing assay of CdtA and investigated the interactions of CdtA with other Cdt subunits. This assay demonstrated that incubation

The conventional treatment of periodontal disease does not solve the high incidence of recolonization of periodontal pockets by pathogens. Here, we introduce an innovative concept of incorporating autochthonous bacteria as potential probiotics into nanofibers for local treatment. We selected and isolated the strain 25.2.M from the oral microbiota of healthy volunteers. It was identified as Bacillus sp. based on 16S rRNA sequence analyses. The strain is nonpathogenic, produces antimicrobial substances, and can grow over the periodontal pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in vitro, ma

Histophilus somni (former name: Haemophilus somnus) is a Gram-negative, facultative pathogen bacterium that colonises the mucous membranes of cattle and sheep, however it was also described in American bison and bighorn sheep. It can cause local or generalised diseases and asymptomatic carriers can also occur. The presence and the etiological role of this microorganism have not been confirmed in any other domesticated species yet. The purpose of this study was to prove the presence of H. somni in goats by bacterial isolation. Nasal, vaginal or praeputial swab samples were collected from 205 go

BACKGROUND: Gallibacterium anatis is an emerging pathogen causing substantial economic losses in global poultry production. Despite its growing clinical significance, the genomic basis of pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance in this species remains poorly understood, particularly in China.
RESULTS: We sequenced and analyzed five clinical G. anatis isolates from Chinese layer chickens alongside 31 global strains, their genomes ranged from 2.25 to 2.81 Mb with 39.8% average GC content. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Chinese isolates cluster according to historical breeding stock impo

The circumstances of diagnosis of human pasteurellosis are reviewed. The diagnosis is usually suspected for animal bite or scratch wounds. Conversely, in other infections the diagnosis is only based on bacteriological data. Phenotypic misidentification of Pasteurellaceae from clinical material is common. The phenotypic criteria of identification of the six species of human pathogen Pasteurella are presented. We emphasise that bite wound specimens have to be cultured for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and yield an average of 5 bacterial isolates per culture. Antibiotic therapy relies upon amino

Periodontal disease is a highly prevalent disease in dogs; however, the underlying shifts in the oral microbiota remain unclear. Although dysbiosis is often associated with a loss of diversity, the ecological dynamics of canine periodontal disease remain poorly characterized. Therefore, we performed pilot study using a multi-angle comparison of the oral microbiota of healthy dogs and those with periodontal disease to identify the taxonomic, predicted functional, and structural signatures of the disease. Supragingival plaque samples were collected from five clinically healthy dogs and five dogs

The foodborne pathogen Yersinia enterocolitica causes gastrointestinal infections worldwide. In the spring of 2019, the Swedish Public Health Agency and Statens Serum Institut in Denmark independently identified an outbreak caused by Yersinia enterocolitica 4/O:3 that after sequence comparison turned out to be a cross-border outbreak. A trace-back investigation suggested shipments of fresh prewashed spinach from Italy as a common source for the outbreak. Here, we determined the genome sequences of five Y. enterocolitica clinical isolates during the Swedish outbreak using a combination of Illum

Gallibacterium anatis is an opportunistic poultry pathogen belonging to the Pasteurellaceae family. It has been shown to cause oophoritis, salpingitis and peritonitis in hens, as well as being associated with reduced semen quality in cockerels. Widespread multidrug resistance and substantial antigenic variation among strains of Gallibacterium anatis is a major constraint to treatment with antimicrobials and prevention of infection by vaccination. Novel vaccine strategies targeting G. anatis are therefore necessary. Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are nanosized vesicles formed from the outer mem

Isolates of the genera Pasteurella and Mannheimia cause a wide variety of diseases of great economic importance in poultry, pigs, cattle and rabbits. Antimicrobial agents represent the most powerful tools to control such infections. However, increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance may dramatically reduce the efficacy of the antimicrobial agents used to control Pasteurella and Mannheimia infections. This review presents a short summary of the infections caused by Pasteurella and Mannheimia isolates in food-producing animals and the possibilities of preventing and controlling primary and se

BACKGROUND: Enzootic pneumonia in calves is associated with pathogens such as Pasteurellaceae bacteria and Mycoplasmopsis bovis. Some of these bacteria are commensals in healthy calves, complicating culture interpretation, discouraging laboratory diagnostic use, and limiting knowledge of their impact. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and antimicrobial resistance pattern of respiratory pathogens in calves from dairy herds with enzootic pneumonia. Culture results between upper and lower airway sites in healthy and diseased calves were also compared to evaluate their diagnostic valu

The tonsil of the soft palate in pigs is a secondary lymphoid tissue that provides a first line of defense against foreign antigens entering by the mouth or nares. It has been known for a long time to be the site of colonization of important swine and zoonotic bacterial pathogens. Initially our understanding of microbes present at this site came from culture-based studies. Very recently, sequence-based approaches have been used to identify the core microbiome of the swine tonsil. Although animal to animal and herd to herd variation was detected in these studies, >90 of the organisms detected b

The taxonomy of the family Pasteurellaceae Pohl 1981 appears to be as complex as that of Enterobacteriaceae. 16S rRNA sequencing indicates that the family should be divided into more than 20 genera. According to phylogenetic investigations, the genus Pasteurella sensu stricto includes three subclusters, two of which represent taxa mainly associated with avian hosts. True species of the genera Actinobacillus and Haemophilus have not been reported from birds. Several new taxa, which have been shown to belong to the family Pasteurellaceae Pohl 1981 have been reported from birds. Some of these see

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), a Gram-negative coccobacillus commonly associated with endocarditis, poses a rare diagnostic challenge in pediatric cases. The presentation of two pediatric cases-myositis and chest mass-highlights novel aspects, including unusual symptom presentations in children which can be mistaken for malignancy. The limited sensitivity of standard blood tests complicates diagnosis, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Representative samples must be taken, especially if blood cultures are negative. Despite advances in detection methods, diagnosing Aa infe

Histophilus somni is a commensal and an opportunistic bacterial pathogen associated with multisystemic diseases in cattle and sheep. Some strains of H. somni isolated from the genital tract of cattle are biochemically and serologically similar to the pathogenic strains, but are relatively innocuous. Several virulence factors/mechanisms have been identified in H. somni, of which the phase-variable lipooligosaccharide, induction of apoptosis of host cells, intraphagocytic survival, and immunoglobulin Fc-binding proteins have been well characterized. The genomes of H. somni pneumonia strain 2336

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is a gram-negative coccobacillus that is part of the usual flora of the oral cavity and is mainly associated with oral and dental pathology; however, in some cases, it has been isolated as the primary causative agent in systemic conditions such as infectious endocarditis, pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, and osteomyelitis. We present the case of a previously healthy patient who developed an invasive disease caused by Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans with pulmonary involvement and fistulization to the chest wall, and the difficulties at the

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is a gram-negative facultative anaerobe and an opportunistic oral pathogen, strongly associated with periodontitis and other inflammatory diseases. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the periodontium resulting from the inflammatory response of the host towards the dysbiotic microbial community present at the gingival crevice. Previously, our group identified catecholamines and iron as the signals that activate the QseBC two-component system in A. actinomycetemcomitans, necessary for the organism to acquire iron as a nutrient to survive in the anaer

Histophilus somni is responsible for sporadic disease worldwide in cattle and, to a lesser extent, in small ruminants, bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), and North American bison (Bison bison). The importance of H. somni diseases can be attributed to improved clinical and laboratory recognition, combined with the growth in intensive management practices for cattle. Although outbreaks of bovine histophilosis can occur year-round, in northern and southern hemispheres, it is most frequent in late fall and early winter. Weather, stress, dietary changes, and comingling of cattle are likely to be majo
