[Effect of parental emotional neglect on non-suicidal self-injury behavior in adolescents: Mediating role of depressive mood].

OBJECTIVES: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior is increasingly prevalent among adolescents. Parental emotional socialization plays a critical role in adolescents' emotional regulation and behavioral development. Sadness, as an affective precursor of depressive mood, may influence adolescents' internalizing and externalizing problems when neglected by parents through emotion-regulation mechanisms. Adopting a triadic perspective of fathers, mothers, and adolescents, this study examined the pathways through which parental neglect of adolescents' sadness contributes to NSSI behaviors and tes

THE INTERGENERATIONAL STABILITY OF PUNISHMENT: PATERNAL INCARCERATION AND SUSPENSION OR EXPULSION IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

OBJECTIVES: I extend the life-course theory of cumulative disadvantage to focus on continuity in punishment across generations. Specifically, I examine (1) the association between paternal incarceration and elementary school suspension or expulsion and (2) the extent to which behavior problems and weakened social bonds explain this association. METHODS: Analyses rely on logistic regression, propensity score matching, and mediation methods with data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N=3,201), a birth-cohort of children born in large United States cities between 1998 and 2000

Differences in mothers' and fathers' health-related quality of life after pediatric SCT: a longitudinal study.

The purpose of this study was to examine longitudinally health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and related factors in mothers and fathers of children who undergo SCT, before, and 1 and 2 years after SCT. A total of 84 parents (49 mothers/35 fathers) of patients diagnosed mainly with leukemia completed a HRQOL measure before SCT, 46 at 1 year (26 mothers/20 fathers) and 50 parents (31 mothers/19 fathers) at 2 years post SCT. Physical and psychosocial HRQOL summary scores are reported. Parents' age and gender, child's diagnosis, radiation history, age, behavior and physical health were examined.

Paternal drinking in western China is associated with preschool children's well-being: a cross-sectional SDQ study.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence links paternal drinking (41.5% prevalence) to preschoolers' behavioral difficulties in Western China, necessitating Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire-based studies to assess psychosocial outcomes. METHOD: From February 28 to March 5, 2025, a cross-sectional study enrolled 25,017 parent-child dyads across 189 public kindergartens in a western city, China, using stratified sampling. After excluding 2,408 non-parents and 1,397 dyads with invalid age data, 21,212 remained. Paternal alcohol intake was categorized as nondrinkers, ex-drinkers, or current drinkers

Prenatal paternal anxiety symptoms predict child DHEA levels and internalizing symptoms during adrenarche.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined (1) whether measures of paternal anxious and depressive symptoms collected prenatally and during a follow-up assessment when the child was in middle childhood, predict child neuroendocrine outcomes, and (2) whether neuroendocrine outcomes are intermediate factors between paternal mental health and child cognitive/behavioral outcomes. Middle childhood coincides with increased autonomy as the child transitions into grade school, and with adrenarche, as the maturing adrenal gland increases secretion of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfated metabolite (DH

Neural Circuit Mechanisms That Underlie Parental Care.

In mammals, parental care is essential for the survival of the young; therefore, it is vitally important to the propagation of the species. These behaviors, differing between the two sexes, are innate, stereotyped, and are also modified by an individual's reproductive experience. These characteristics suggest that neural mechanisms underlying parental behaviors are genetically hardwired, evolutionarily conserved as well as sexually differentiated and malleable to experiential changes. Classical lesion studies on neural control of parental behaviors, mostly done in rats, date back to the 1950s.

The correlation between non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents, parenting styles, and borderline personality traits.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the associations between parenting styles, borderline personality traits, and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents with depression, thereby providing a theoretical foundation for targeted psychological interventions. METHODS: This study included 101 adolescent patients with depressive episodes admitted to the Fourth People's Hospital of Wuhu City, Anhui Province, from May 2022 to October 2023 (23 males and 78females). Two attending physicians or those of higher ranks diagnosed these patients as having depressive episodes based on the Dia

Low paternal postpartum depression buffers the association between maternal prenatal depression and preschoolers' internalizing and externalizing symptoms.

Examining the impact and interplay of maternal and paternal perinatal mental health problems enhances understanding of the etiology of mental health problems in early childhood. This study investigated associations between maternal and paternal prenatal (first trimester) and postnatal (3 and 30 months) anxiety and depression symptoms and preschoolers' internalizing and externalizing symptoms. The sample included 115 preschoolers and their parents (N = 230) recruited during the first trimester of pregnancy at a Portuguese health facility. Mothers and fathers completed anxiety and depression mea

Interactions between parents and parents and pups in the monogamous California mouse (Peromyscus californicus).

The California mouse (Peromyscuscalifornicus) may be a valuable animal model to study parenting as it is one of the few monogamous and biparental rodent species. By using automated infra-red imaging and video documentation of established pairs spanning two days prior to birth of the litter until d 5 of post natal development (PND), it was possible to follow interactions between parents and between parents and pups. The paired males were attentive to their partners in the form of grooming and sniffing throughout the time period studied. Both these and other activities of the partners, such as e

Executive functions and parenting behaviors in association with medical adherence and autonomy among youth with spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to examine whether executive functions and parenting behaviors (acceptance, behavioral control, and psychological control) are associated with medical adherence and autonomy among preadolescents and adolescents with spina bifida (SB). METHODS: Questionnaire and observational data were collected from a sample of 8-15 year olds with SB (N = 140) and their mothers, fathers, and teachers. Youth also completed neuropsychological testing. RESULTS: Youth with SB demonstrated impairment on measures of executive functions, based on questionnaire and test data. Execu

Paternal postnatal depression and child development at age 7 years in a UK-birth cohort: the mediating roles of paternal parenting confidence, warmth, and conflict.

INTRODUCTION: Paternal postnatal depression (PND) and its likely adverse impact on child development are receiving increased attention. However, research that examines processes transmitting risks of paternal PND to adverse child outcomes remains limited. METHODS: This study examines pathways from paternal PND (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale; 8 months) to child emotional and behavioral development (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire; 7 years) through paternal parenting confidence, warmth, and father-child conflict (birth-4 years) in a UK-based birth cohort, the Avon Longitudinal S

Phenotype of a child with Angelman syndrome born to a woman with Prader-Willi syndrome.

This report describes the phenotype, from early childhood to adolescence, of a girl with Angelman syndrome (AS) born following a maternal transmission of a germline paternal 15q11.2-q13 deletion. During early childhood, she showed a typical AS phenotype, such as jerky movements, poor sleep, high voltage electroencephalography pattern, epilepsy, and a severe developmental disability. As she grew older, indications of phenotypical traits similar to Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) appeared, in particular hyperphagic behavior and a body fat distribution similar to that reported in PWS. She generally s

Emotion recognition in preschool children: associations with maternal depression and early parenting.

Emotion knowledge in childhood has been shown to predict social functioning and psychological well-being, but relatively little is known about parental factors that influence its development in early childhood. There is some evidence that both parenting behavior and maternal depression are associated with emotion recognition, but previous research has only examined these factors independently. The current study assessed auditory and visual emotion recognition ability among a large sample of preschool children to examine typical emotion recognition skills in children of this age, as well as the

Experimental manipulation of floral display size does not affect the distribution of paternal diversity in Silene dioica.

PREMISE: Various factors, including pollinator visitation patterns and pollen carryover, govern paternal diversity and its distribution within maternal plants. Floral display size may have opposite effects on fruit- and plant-level paternal diversity, because plants with large displays may receive more pollinator visits but also more sequential probes per visit. METHODS: To investigate the effect of floral display size on the distribution of paternal diversity in Silene dioica, we genotyped and assigned paternity for 1320 seeds sampled in several fruits per plant in control and manipulated fe

Parent-of-origin dependent allelic regulation of social behaviors in mice by noncanonically imprinted monoamine synthesis genes.

Monoamine neurotransmitters are central regulators of social behavior, yet it is unknown whether genomic imprinting of genes within their signaling pathways modulate these behaviors. The monoamine synthesis genes tyrosine hydroxylase (Th) and dopa decarboxylase (Ddc) exhibit tissue-specific, noncanonical imprinting in mice, with preferential maternal allele expression in the brain and paternal biased Ddc expression in peripheral tissues. Prior work indicated that imprinting of these genes causes parent-of-origin dependent allelic influences on mood-related and foraging behaviors. Here, we test

The role of perceived parental overprotection in women's restrained eating behavior: A moderated mediation model of alexithymia, perfectionism, and asceticism.

Restrained eating behavior (REB) refers to the tendency to rigidly restrict one's eating behavior in everyday life to influence body shape or weight. Parental overprotection, alexithymia, perfectionism, and asceticism are associated with REB among women. However, no studies have examined these variables simultaneously, integrating them into a theoretical model. In the current study, the combined influences of these variables on women's REB were tested. A total of 412 women (Mage = 23.53 ± 4.24; range = 16-54) completed well-known self-report measures: Parental Bonding Instrument, Toronto Alexi

Stress and child internalizing symptoms: Examining the moderating role of Latino fathers' warmth and support.

Latino immigrants within the United States experience various stressors, which have been linked to the development and exacerbation of internalizing symptoms among Latino youth. Therefore, it is crucial to explore factors that may buffer the impact of stress among immigrant families. Fathers may influence child outcomes through positive parenting behaviors, yet Latino fathers have been underrepresented in research. This study examined how paternal warmth and support may moderate the association between the accumulation of stress and child internalizing symptoms among low-income, Latino immigra

Patterns of family instability and crime: The association of timing of the family's disruption with subsequent adolescent and young adult criminality.

This study provides a longitudinal view of selected correlates of family disruption and suggests how they may contribute to adolescent and young adult criminal behavior. Data from a sample of 410 males, ages 19-21, who took part in an 18-year follow-up study of a Danish Prospective Perinatal Cohort, were used. Paternal crime, descriptions of the families'patterns of stability, and socioeconomic status changes over the life of the offspring were examined to determine their association with official records of adolescent and young adult crime. Analyses showed that divorce followed by a stable fa

Prenatal vitamin A supplementation associated with adverse child behavior at 3 years in a prospective birth cohort in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Many pregnant women take vitamin supplements during pregnancy. The aim of this paper was to clarify the effects of dietary supplementation prior to and/or during pregnancy on child behavior. METHODS: A prospective birth cohort study from pregnancy to 3 years of age involving 1271 pairs of Japanese pregnant women and their newborns, was carried out. The women completed a self-administered questionnaire during the third trimester of pregnancy. To evaluate deviations in child behavior as an endpoint, each mother completed the Japanese Child Behavior Checklist for ages 2-3 years after

Sad dads: paternal postpartum depression.

The postpartum period is associated with many adjustments to fathers that pose risks for depression. Estimates of the prevalence of paternal postpartum depression (PPD) in the first two months postpartum vary in the postpartum period from 4 to 25 percent. Paternal PPD has high comorbidity with maternal PPD and might also be associated with other postpartum psychiatric disorders. Studies so far have only used diagnostic criteria for maternal PPD to investigate paternal PPD, so there is an urgent need to study the validity of these scales for men and develop accurate diagnostic tools for paterna
