Emergency Department Utilization and Patient Acuity in the Setting of Care-Seeking Hesitancy: Insights from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly altered emergency department (ED) utilization patterns. This study quantifies the statistics at a Level I trauma center in Southern California from 14 months before to nine months after the start of the pandemic (January 2019-December 2020). We hypothesized that during the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in ED use patterns impacted patient acuity, as measured by admission rate, mortality rate, ED volume, Emergency Severity Index (ESI), and female:male ratio, even when controlling for COVID-19 cases. METHODS: In this study

The Minimally Important Difference (MID) in Visual Acuity That Represents Changes in Patients' Quality of Life.

To assess the minimal change in visual acuity perceived by patients as important in different eye-related interventions. PubMed was utilized to search articles on each of the four major interventions: cataract surgery, keratoplasty, different glaucoma treatments, and refractive eye surgery, each combined with quality of life (QoL) and visual acuity keywords. The search was narrowed to articles between 2000 and 2023. Seventy-four major articles were thus reviewed. Of these, 27 studies reviewed the results of cataract surgery, 20 studies discussed the effect of keratoplasty interventions on the

Pain sensitivity and tactile spatial acuity are altered in healthy musicians as in chronic pain patients.

Extensive training of repetitive and highly skilled movements, as it occurs in professional classical musicians, may lead to changes in tactile sensitivity and corresponding cortical reorganization of somatosensory cortices. It is also known that professional musicians frequently experience musculoskeletal pain and pain-related symptoms during their careers. The present study aimed at understanding the complex interaction between chronic pain and music training with respect to somatosensory processing. For this purpose, tactile thresholds (mechanical detection, grating orientation, two-point d

Near visual acuity: a simple measure of practical significance in insulin-treated diabetic patients.

The value of measuring near visual acuity as a predictor of loss of independence in administering insulin and monitoring blood or urine glucose has been assessed in 110 insulin-treated diabetic patients. Near visual acuity was simple to measure in the clinic setting, and correlated well with 6 m acuity. Fourteen patients depended on an assistant either to draw up the correct dose of insulin (n = 12), inject the insulin (n = 7) or to monitor blood or urine glucose (n = 12). Of these 14 patients only one, who was demented, had near visual acuity better than N.12. Two other patients had near visu

Change in Visual Acuity of Patients With Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy Over 1 Year.

PURPOSE: To determine whether the clinical and paraclinical course of Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) over 1 year is related to the extent of triplet repetition in the transcription factor 4 (TCF4) gene. METHODS: A prospective study with a 1-year follow-up was conducted. A total of 104 patients (160 eyes) with FECD and an equivalent number of age- and sex-matched control subjects without FECD were included. At inclusion, the corneas were graded using the modified Krachmer grade (KG) and patients were genotyped for the number of trinucleotide repeats (TNRs) in the TCF4 gene by the s

Effect of Optic Canal Opening on Postoperative Visual Acuity in Patients with Tuberculum Sellae Meningiomas.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculum sellae meningiomas (TSMs) account for 5 to 10% of all intracranial meningiomas. They typically invade the optic canal and displace the optic nerve upward and laterally. The transcranial approach has been the standard surgical approach, while the transsphenoidal approach has been proposed for its minimally invasive nature; however, some reservations concerning this approach remain. METHODS: From January 2000 to December 2018, a total of 97 patients who were diagnosed with TSM with invasion of the optic canal were enrolled and underwent microsurgery for tumor removal with

Effects of Anticholinergic Drugs on Visual Acuity of Patients with Tracheal Intubation under General Anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: General anesthesia (GA) is the core means of surgical intervention, mainly used for analgesia and anxiety relief. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the laboratory and clinical research results during induction of GA. Penehyclidine hydrochloride (PHCD) combined with atropine sulfate (Atr) has the potential to induce GA. However, the role of PHCD combined with Atr during tracheal intubation under GA remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The research is aimed at exploring the effects of preoperative PHCD or Atr on adverse reactions (ARs) in patients during tracheal intubation under gene
