INTRODUCTION: Earlier, we showed that neuropathic complications limit social participation of ex-leprosy patients, even in a non-endemic leprosy setting like the Netherlands. Self-care groups for ex-leprosy patients can strengthen self-worth of participants, prevent further handicap, and enable the exchange of coping strategies. For non-endemic leprosy settings with a very low rate of leprosy patients, a self-care group exclusively for (ex)leprosy patients is not likely to be feasible. A combined group with patients facing comparable morbidity would be more efficient than disease-specific self

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of an Internet-based patient education intervention, which was designed upon principles of personalization and participatory design.
METHODS: Fifteen months after the first release of the website, 209 fibromyalgia patients recruited through health professionals completed an online questionnaire to assess patients' use of the website, health knowledge, self-management behavior, and health outcomes. These constructs were combined into an a-priory model that was tested using a structural equation modeling approach.
RESULTS: Results show that the usage o

Drug-induced and idiosyncratic cytopenias, including anemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia, present significant challenges in fields like immunohematology and internal medicine. These conditions are often unpredictable, multifactorial, and can arise from a complex interplay of drug reactions, immune abnormalities, and other poorly understood mechanisms. In many cases, the precise triggers and underlying factors remain unclear, making diagnosis and management difficult. However, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are offering new opportunities to address these challenges. With its

BACKGROUND: There is a need to better understand barriers to recruitment and participation in randomized controlled trials evaluating postpartum thromboprophylaxis, as previous trials had low recruitment and were not feasible.
OBJECTIVES: In a qualitative interview study of a feasibility trial of low-dose aspirin vs placebo for 6 weeks postpartum (pilot PARTUM (Postpartum Aspirin to Reduce Thromboembolism Undue Morbidity) trial), we explored the facilitators and barriers to trial involvement.
METHODS: Patients eligible for the pilot PARTUM trial, including those who declined to join the tria

BACKGROUND: Early in the pandemic, there were no evidence-based treatments for SARS-CoV-2, creating an urgent need to identify effective therapeutics. However, public participation in medical research is low; trial enrollment in the US is typically 10-20%. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify common themes underpinning patient reasons to decline participation and evaluate the impact of specific contextual factors.
METHODS: This sub-study was conducted in five VISN-1 Clinical Trials Network participating facilities from 4/10/2020-2/3/2021. The trial evaluated the addition of the IL-6-in

BACKGROUND: Under-recruitment regularly impedes clinical trials, leading to wasted resources and opportunity costs. Methods for designing trial participation strategies rarely consider behavior change theory.
OBJECTIVE: Informed by the Theoretical Domains Framework, we identified factors important to participating in Huntington's disease research and provide examples of how such a theory-informed approach can make specific suggestions about how to design targeted recruitment strategies.
METHODS: We identified a range of trial participation barriers and enablers based on interviews of key inf

IMPORTANCE: The Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB) is a patient-reported outcome measure assessing the association between communication disorders and participation in daily communication. To our knowledge, no prior research has examined whether CPIB scores change after treatment of unilateral vocal fold immobility (UVFI).
OBJECTIVE: To compare CPIB scores before and after treatment of UVFI and with patient-defined target treatment outcomes and other common clinical outcomes after UVFI intervention.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This single-group case series recruited a conven

BACKGROUND: Family-centered care is a valued approach to improving child and family outcomes in early intervention (EI), yet there is need to implement interventions that support information exchange for shared decision-making when planning and monitoring EI care. This study aims at estimating the feasibility, acceptability, and value of implementing the Young Children's Participation and Environment Measure (YC-PEM), a valid electronic patient-reported outcome (e-PRO) that is designed to support family engagement when planning care and monitoring outcomes of care.
METHODS: Data were gathered

BACKGROUND: The burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its treatment may severely limit the ability of children with CKD to do daily tasks and participate in family, school, sporting and recreational activities. Life participation is critically important to affected children and their families; however, the appropriateness and validity of available measures used to assess this outcome are uncertain. The aim of this study was to identify the characteristics, content and psychometric properties of existing measures for life participation used in children with CKD.
METHODS: We searched MEDLI

The term cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) encompasses pacemakers (PMs), implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, which are well-established treatments for cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Advances in CIED therapy have led to an increasing number of patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) receiving such devices. In general, low levels of physical activity are associated with a higher risk of cardiac and all-cause mortality in patients with CIED. These patients are considered eligibl

INTRODUCTION: People living with chronic diseases can provide a unique perspective for research that often differs from that of healthcare professionals. This is particularly important in rare diseases like primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), with many knowledge gaps and limited research resources. We aimed to assess participation of patients and caregivers in PCD research and identify their research priorities in a mixed-method study.
METHODS: We conducted in-depth, semistructured interviews with adults and adolescents with PCD, and caregivers of children with PCD. After verbatim transcription

Introduction Keratoconus is a bilateral non-inflammatory ectasia, characterized by well-described histopathological changes such as stromal thinning, epithelial iron deposition, and breaks in Bowman's layer. The success of clinical intervention among patients with keratoconus is widely determined by randomized clinical trials, and despite associated difficulties, such trials may improve vision and quality of life. Aim This study aimed to assess the willingness of patients with keratoconus in Saudi Arabia to undergo clinical trials. We further aimed to identify patients' beliefs and attitudes t

Current guidelines recommend patients with thoracic aortic disease (TAD) including inherited aortopathies to avoid heavy exercise. However, evidence supporting the negative advice on exercise is scarce. We aimed to provide an up-to-date systematic review of the available evidence on risks and benefits of exercise and sports participation in TAD patients. Areas covered: A systematic search was performed in Medline, Embase and Web of Science: thoracic aortic aneurysm or thoracic aortic dissection or inheritable aortopathies including Marfan Syndrome (MFS), Loeys-Dietz syndrome, Turner Syndrome,

BACKGROUND: Clinical treatment trials are increasingly being designed in primary mitochondrial disease (PMD), a phenotypically and genetically heterogeneous collection of inherited multi- system energy deficiency disorders that lack effective therapy. We sought to identify motivating factors and barriers to clinical trial participation in PMD.
METHODS: A survey study was conducted in two independent mitochondrial disease subject cohorts. A discovery cohort invited subjects with well-defined biochemical or molecularly- confirmed PMD followed at a single medical center (CHOP, n = 30/67 (45%) re
