Prevalence and Predictors of Readmissions in Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and Atrial Fibrillation/Flutter.

Atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF) is the most common dysrhythmia in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Unexplained left ventricular hypertrophy and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction are integral components of HCM pathology which can cause increased left atrial pressure and atrial myopathy contributing to the substrate for AF. We aimed to determine the impact of AF on hospital readmissions in patients with HCM. We conducted a retrospective analysis using the 2015 to 2019 Nationwide Readmission Database to analyze the effect of AF on 30-day readmission and causes of 30-day

Risk factors for 30-day hospital readmission in patients with diabetic foot.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot (DF) is part of the natural history of diabetes mellitus, ulceration being a severe complication with a prevalence of approximately 6.3 %, which confers a significant economic burden. Hospital readmission in the first thirty (30) days is considered a measure of quality of healthcare and it's been identified that the most preventable causes are the ones that occur in this period. This study seeks to identify the risk factors associated with readmission of patients with DF. METHODS: A case-control study was done by performing a secondary analysis of a database. Descr

Effect of constipation on readmission for heart failure in patients with acute heart failure.

AIMS: Constipation is a common gastrointestinal disorder that is associated with a high cardiovascular event rate in the general population. Although constipation is common in patients with cardiovascular diseases, only a few studies have examined the relationship between constipation and the prognosis of patients with heart failure. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of constipation on the prognosis of patients with acute heart failure. METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated 397 patients admitted to our hospital from December 2020 to December 2022 with acute heart failure (mean age, 81 ±

Hospital Readmission in Patients With Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Prevalence, Causes, and Outcomes.

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the rate of readmission in patients affected by diabetes and foot ulcers (DFUs), and causes and outcomes of patients requiring a new hospitalization. The current study is a retrospective observational study including patients who have required hospitalization since January 2019 to September 2022 due to a DFU. Once patients were discharged, they were regularly followed as outpatients. Within 6 months of follow-up, the rate of hospital readmission for a diabetic foot problem was recorded. According to the readmission or not, patients were divided into

Delayed hemothorax readmissions after rib fracture in blunt trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Rib fractures are the most common traumatic injury. Hemothorax is one of the widespread complications associated with a rib fracture and occurs in 10-37 % of all rib fractures. Delayed hemothorax (DHTX) is defined as an accumulation of blood within the pleural cavity. Although there is extensive literature on hemothorax, there is limited literature on rib fractures and DHTX readmissions. The objective of this study was to identify potential risk factors for DHTX readmission and examine descriptive information on readmission. METHODS: Using the 2016-2019 National Readmission Databa

Readmission and adverse outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with dementia.

BACKGROUND: As the population ages, clinicians increasingly encounter ischemic heart disease in patients with underlying dementia. Therefore, we quantified differences in inhospital adverse events and 30-day readmission rates among patients with and without dementia undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: Using the National Readmissions Database 2017-2018, we identified 755,406 index hospitalizations in which PCI was performed, of which 17,309 (2.3%) had a diagnosis of dementia. After propensity score matching patients with and without dementia, we assessed 30-day readmi

Burden and Correlates of Hospital Readmissions among U.S. Peritoneal Dialysis Patients.

Background:Hospital readmissions are common among in-center hemodialysis patients, but little is known about readmissions among peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Using national administrative data, we aimed to examine the burden and correlates of hospital readmissions among U.S. PD patients. Methods:Among 10,505 adult U.S. PD patients with an index admission (first admission after 120 days on dialysis) between 31 January 2011 and 30 November 2014, readmissions were defined as new hospital admissions within 30 days of index discharge. Multivariable logistic regression was used to obtain adjuste

Risk of readmission in patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder newly prescribed clozapine.

BACKGROUND: Insight into the effect of clozapine is limited by a lack of controlling for confounding variables in current research. Our objective was to investigate the association between clozapine prescribed at discharge, following an inpatient episode, and risk of readmission into secondary mental health services in patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, controlling extensively for confounding variables. METHODS: Clinical records from 3651 patients were analysed in a retrospective observational cohort study. Cox proportional-hazards regression models were used to assess

Nationally Representative Readmission Factors in Patients with Claudication and Critical Limb Ischemia.

BACKGROUND: Hospital readmissions are associated not only with increased mortality, morbidity, and costs but also, with current health-care reform, tied to significant financial and administrative penalties. Some studies show that patients undergoing vascular surgery may have higher than average readmission rates. The recently released Nationwide Readmission Database (NRD) is the most comprehensive national source of readmission data, gathering discharge information from 22 geographically dispersed states, accounting for 51.2% of the total U.S. resident population and 49.3% of all U.S. hospita

Clinical Factors Associated with Readmission among Patients with Lower Limb Cellulitis.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial allocation of resources directed towards evaluation and management of lower limb cellulitis (LLC) in the acute care setting. Readmission for LLC is poorly understood, and there is little evidence with which to identify patients at risk for readmission. OBJECTIVE: To describe demographics, comorbidities, admission vital signs, and laboratory markers of infection among patients with LLC who are readmitted, and to investigate which among these factors is associated with readmission. METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective cohort study was performed at tertiary

Readmissions for warfarin-related bleeding in pediatric patients after hospital discharge.

BACKGROUND: Warfarin therapy in pediatric patients can be difficult to manage with bleeding as a primary adverse event. Therapy initiation can be difficult as doses to achieve therapeutic outcomes are being determined. Evaluation of readmission for bleeding in pediatric patients discharged on warfarin therapy may be useful to prevent adverse events. METHODS: The Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) was queried to identify all patients <19 years of age who were discharged from a pediatric hospital on warfarin therapy. Patients who were readmitted with bleeding in the first 30 days after

Barriers to cardiac rehabilitation and their association with hospital readmission in patients with heart failure.

BACKGROUND: High rehospitalization rates and limited access to cardiac rehabilitation characterize heart failure in South America. This study highlights the significant barriers faced by patients, including lack of energy, awareness, and accessibility. Despite these challenges, professional exercise supervision has reduced readmission rates by more than 50%, underscoring its importance. ■ Barriers to rehabilitation: high inactivity rates (88.4%) and significant barriers, such as fatigue and lack of awareness, hinder recovery. ■ Professional supervision: only 1% of patients were enrolled in for

Readmission and Disposition in Patients With Malignant Bowel Obstructions Following Gastrostomy Tube.

BACKGROUND: Patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) can develop malignant bowel obstructions (MBOs) requiring inpatient admission and nasogastric tube decompression. Palliative decompressive gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes) may affect patient disposition, allowing for self-management and reduction in inpatient services. Therefore, we sought to assess disposition and inpatient readmission rates in patients admitted with PC and MBO following G-tube placement. METHODS: The Vizient® Clinical Data Base was queried for inpatient admissions from October 2018 to May 2022 utilizing ICD-10 codes to ide
