Disposable circumcision suture device: clinical effect and patient satisfaction.

In our experience patients undergoing circumcision are mostly concerned about pain and penile appearances. We conducted a prospective randomized trial to assess the benefits of a new disposable circumcision suture device (DCSD). A total of 942 patients were equally divided into three groups (conventional circumcision, Shang ring and disposable suture device group). Patients in the DCSD group were anesthetized with compound 5% lidocaine cream, the others with a 2% lidocaine penile block. Operation time, intra-operative blood loss, incision healing time, intra-operative and post-operative pain,

[Patient satisfaction with two different types of bladder catheters].

BACKGROUND: The insertion of a urinary catheter may cause some discomfort or pain. This study was done in order to compare patient-perceived discomfort with two commonly used coated urinary catheters for in-out catheterisation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 196 women were randomised to be catheterised with one of two coated, hydrophilic catheters, either a Lofric or a SpeediCath catheter. Degree of discomfort was recorded on a 10 cm visual analogue scale. RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION: There was no difference in patient-perceived discomfort between the two catheters. The degree of discomfort

Unpacking the concept of patient satisfaction: a feminist analysis.

AIM: The aim of this paper is to present a feminist critique of the concept of patient satisfaction. BACKGROUND: Fiscal restraint, health care restructuring, shifting demographics, biomedical technological advances, and a significant shortage of health care professionals are stretching health care systems across North America to the breaking point. A simultaneous focus on consumerism and health service accountability is placing additional pressure on the system. The concept of patient satisfaction, with roots in the consumer movement of the 1960s, has both practical and political relevance in

House staff nonverbal communication skills and standardized patient satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of physician nonverbal communication with standardized patient (SP) satisfaction in the context of the "quality" of the interview (i.e., information provided and collected, communication skills). DESIGN: Observational. SETTING: One university-based internal medicine residency program. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-nine internal medicine residents. INTERVIEWING: The 59 residents were recruited to participate in 3 SP encounters. The scenarios included: 1) a straightforward, primarily "medical" problem (chest pain); 2) a patient with more psychosocial overlay (a dep

UPPP for snoring: long-term results and patient satisfaction.

We retrospectively survey 57 patients who underwent uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) because of habitual snoring over a five-year period. A total of 100 patients were sent questionnaires concerning persistent snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), body mass index (BMI) and postoperative complications. After 5 years the success rate was 53%. The mean snoring score was 16.7 preoperatively and decreased to 10.6 postoperatively. There was a relationship between the body mass index (BMI) preoperatively and the efficiency of the surgery. The mean EDS score was 11.1 before and 9.4 after surgery

Patient satisfaction after surgical treatment for fistula-in-ano.

PURPOSE: The surgical treatment of fistula-in-ano frequently results in recurrence of the fistula or postoperative anal incontinence. Despite these problems, most patients are satisfied with the results of their surgery. To clarify this apparent discrepancy, we attempted to identify factors that affect patient's lifestyles and may contribute to their satisfaction. METHODS: A questionnaire was mailed to 624 patients surgically treated for cryptoglandular fistula-in-ano at the University of Minnesota during a five-year period. Three hundred seventy-five patients returned their questionnaires. P

The continent ileostomy: long-term durability and patient satisfaction.

The long-term results of the continent ileostomy are controversial. Durability and patient satisfaction were evaluated by analyzing the outcome in 129 consecutive patients who had a continent ileostomy performed by one surgeon at the University of California, San Francisco, between 1975 and 1995. A quality-of-life questionnaire was sent to all patients for whom addresses were available (n = 121). Late outcome data could be obtained for 85 (66%) of the 129 patients. Three of the 85 patients died with their continent ileostomies but of unrelated causes. Fifty-one (60%) of 85 patients currently h

Patient satisfaction with decision-making for breast cancer therapy.

BACKGROUND: Many sources have suggested that mastectomy is inappropriately performed too frequently for breast cancer, leading to excessive patient dissatisfaction and unnecessary mutilation. Hurried decision-making based on inadequate information has been proposed as an explanation. METHODS: After confirming the diagnosis of breast cancer, patients were informed of the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options according to a standard protocol. The protocol was similar to that used by many surgeons in similar circumstances. Six months after completion of either mastectomy or breast conserva

Interaction exchange structure and patient satisfaction with medical interviews.

The verbal interaction between patients and physicians in 52 initial interviews in a university hospital screening clinic was studied using a new discourse coding system. Factor analysis of category frequencies showed that each interview segment, medical history, physical examination, and conclusion, consisted mainly of two or three types of verbal exchange. Patient satisfaction with the interviews, assessed with a questionnaire that yields separate scores for satisfaction with cognitive and affective aspects, was found to be associated with exchanges involving the transmission of information

Assessing Patient Satisfaction with Mammography Using Patient-Reported Measures: A Prospective Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Negative experiences during mammography can reduce patient's adherence. Yet patient-reported measures focusing on the diagnostic pathway remain limited, particularly in general radiology departments that are not specialized in breast imaging only. This prospective study evaluated the overall patient satisfaction with digital mammography (DM) using a tailored patient-reported experience measure (PREM) and examined associations with personal, clinical, and procedural factors to identify actionable quality-assurance targets. METHODS: Women undergoing DM or digital breast tomosynthe

Conversational artificial intelligence for pre-procedural patient preparation: implementation, validation and patient satisfaction.

Preparing patients for cardiac catheterization requires critical but repetitive tasks. We conducted a prospective evaluation of the AI voice assistant, Sofiya, for pre-procedural calls in our center. A customized Large Language Model was trained on medical knowledge and deployed on an agentic AI framework with conversational AI. Sofiya called patients to provide instructions, collect clinical data, and answer questions or redirect the patient to a nurse. The study consisted of a 90-day stabilization period with collaboration between clinicians and developers (Phase I), followed by a 90-day rea

The Effect of Personalized Patient Videos on Patient Satisfaction After Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery.

Dissatisfaction after shoulder arthroscopy may be influenced by the information that patients receive. Multimedia is an emerging modality of information delivery. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether providing patients with a personalized video of their arthroscopic shoulder surgery improved satisfaction through a multisurgeon randomized controlled study. Patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder decompression, rotator cuff repair, or labral repair were randomized to either the intervention group, receiving a video recording of their surgery, or the control group, not receiving a vid
