Simultanagnosia does not affect processes of auditory Gestalt perception.

Simultanagnosia is a neuropsychological deficit of higher visual processes caused by temporo-parietal brain damage. It is characterized by a specific failure of recognition of a global visual Gestalt, like a visual scene or complex objects, consisting of local elements. In this study we investigated to what extend this deficit should be understood as a deficit related to specifically the visual domain or whether it should be seen as defective Gestalt processing per se. To examine if simultanagnosia occurs across sensory domains, we designed several auditory experiments sharing typical characte

Dissociating estimation from comparison and response eliminates parietal involvement in sequential numerosity perception.

It has been widely debated whether the parietal cortex stores an abstract representation of numerosity that is activated for Arabic digits as well as for non-symbolic stimuli in a sensory modality independent fashion. Some studies suggest that numerical information in time-invariant (simultaneous) symbolic and non-symbolic visual stimuli is represented in the parietal cortex. In humans, whether the same representation is activated for time-variant (sequential) stimuli and for stimuli coming from different modalities has not been determined. To investigate this idea, we measured the brain activ

Object identification leads to a conceptual broadening of object representations in lateral prefrontal cortex.

Recent experience identifying objects leads to later improvements in both speed and accuracy ("repetition priming"), along with simultaneous reductions of neural activity ("repetition suppression"). A popular interpretation of these joint behavioral and neural phenomena is that object representations become perceptually "sharper" with stimulus repetition, eliminating cells that are poorly stimulus-selective and responsive and reducing support for competing representations downstream. Here, we test this hypothesis in an fMRI-adaptation experiment using pictures of objects. Prior to fMRI, partic

Direction-specific fMRI adaptation reveals the visual cortical network underlying the "Rotating Snakes" illusion.

The "Rotating Snakes" figure elicits a clear sense of anomalous motion in stationary repetitive patterns. We used an event-related fMRI adaptation paradigm to investigate cortical mechanisms underlying the illusory motion. Following an adapting stimulus (S1) and a blank period, a probe stimulus (S2) that elicited illusory motion either in the same or in the opposite direction was presented. Attention was controlled by a fixation task, and control experiments precluded explanations in terms of artefacts of local adaptation, afterimages, or involuntary eye movements. Recorded BOLD responses were

Hostility and facial affect recognition: effects of a cold pressor stressor on accuracy and cardiovascular reactivity.

The effects of hostility and a cold pressor stressor on the accuracy of facial affect perception were examined in the present experiment. A mechanism whereby physiological arousal level is mediated by systems which also mediate accuracy of an individual's interpretation of affective cues is described. Right-handed participants were classified as high hostile (N = 28) or low hostile (N = 28) using the Cook Medley Hostility Scale. The high-hostile group met joint selection criteria. Only high-hostile participants who showed cardiovascular reactivity to the cold pressor, with systolic BP change e

Sustained neural activity correlates with rapid perceptual learning of auditory patterns.

Repeating structures forming regular patterns are common in sounds. Learning such patterns may enable accurate perceptual organization. In five experiments, we investigated the behavioral and neural signatures of rapid perceptual learning of regular sound patterns. We show that recurring (compared to novel) patterns are detected more quickly and increase sensitivity to pattern deviations and to the temporal order of pattern onset relative to a visual stimulus. Sustained neural activity reflected perceptual learning in two ways. Firstly, sustained activity increased earlier for recurring than n

The 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) receptor 6 agonist EMD 386088 ameliorates ketamine-induced deficits in attentional set shifting and novel object recognition, but not in the prepulse inhibition in rats.

Preclinical data suggest that the 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) 6 (5-HT6) receptor may be a potential target for the development of new therapies for treating cognitive dysfunctions in schizophrenia and other central nervous system disorders. Recent evidence indicates that not only blockade but also activation of 5-HT6 receptors exerts procognitive effects. Nevertheless, little is known about the potential efficacy of 5-HT6 receptor agonists in models of schizophrenia-like cognitive deficits. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the 5-HT6 receptor agonist, EMD 386088,

Afferent control of locomotor CPG: insights from a simple neuromechanical model.

A simple neuromechanical model has been developed that describes a spinal central pattern generator (CPG) controlling the locomotor movement of a single-joint limb via activation of two antagonist (flexor and extensor) muscles. The limb performs rhythmic movements under control of the muscular, gravitational and ground reaction forces. Muscle afferents provide length-dependent (types Ia and II) and force-dependent (type Ib from the extensor) feedback to the CPG. We show that afferent feedback adjusts CPG operation to the kinematics and dynamics of the limb providing stable "locomotion." Increa

Tremor.

Tremor is a rhythmic, involuntary muscular contraction with consistency of rate, amplitude and pattern. It is the most common of all involuntary movements. Several systems for classifying tremor exist with the most frequent system classed according to behavioral context, ie, resting, postural and action. Clinical recognition of tremor type is extremely important as type determines prognosis, treatment and need for genetic counseling. The most common forms are parkinsonian, physiological, cerebellar intention and essential tremor. Essential or hereditary tremor is the most common of all neurolo

Personalized Urination Activity Recognition Based on a Recurrent Neural Network Using Smart Band.

PURPOSE: Though it is very important obtaining exact data about patients' voiding patterns for managing voiding dysfunction, actual practice is very difficult and cumbersome. In this study, data about urination time and interval measured by smart band device on patients' wrist were collected and analyzed to resolve the clinical arguments about the efficacy of voiding diary. By developing a smart band based algorithm for recognition of complex and serial pattern of motion, this study aimed to explore the feasibility of measurement the urination time and intervals for voiding dysfunction managem

Disentangling phonological and articulatory processing: A neuroanatomical study in aphasia.

Phonological and articulatory programming impairments may co-occur in aphasic patients and previous research does not offer a clear-cut picture of their anatomical counterparts. Hickok and Poeppel (2007) put forward a seminal model of speech processes. The ventral stream (mostly bilateral) would be involved in speech recognition and phonological-lexical processing, whereas the dorsal stream (largely lateralized to the left hemisphere) would map phonological representations onto articulatory motor patterns. In this study we analyzed repetition errors for single words and spontaneous speech rati

An Integrated Visualization of Continuous Glucose and Insulin Pump Data for Patients.

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and insulin pump technologies generate extensive physiological and therapeutic data. Most commercial platforms display data streams separately, requiring users to cognitively integrate events that influence glycemic outcomes. This segmentation may obscure the relationships among glucose fluctuations, insulin administration, and meal patterns, potentially impairing decision-making. This project employed the UFuRT framework to create a unified visualization that consolidates glucose traces, bolus events, basal profiles, and carbohydrate intake into a single ti

Recognition of motor intentions from EEGs of the same upper limb by signal traceability and Riemannian geometry features.

INTRODUCTION: The electroencephalographic (EEG) based on the motor imagery task is derived from the physiological electrical signal caused by the autonomous activity of the brain. Its weak potential difference changes make it easy to be overwhelmed by noise, and the EEG acquisition method has a natural limitation of low spatial resolution. These have brought significant obstacles to high-precision recognition, especially the recognition of the motion intention of the same upper limb. METHODS: This research proposes a method that combines signal traceability and Riemannian geometric features t

Targeting Innate Immunity to Combat Cutaneous Stress: The Vitiligo Perspective.

Multiple factors are involved in the process leading to melanocyte loss in vitiligo including environmental triggers, genetic polymorphisms, metabolic alterations, and autoimmunity. This review aims to highlight current knowledge on how danger signals released by stressed epidermal cells in a predisposed patient can trigger the innate immune system and initiate a cascade of events leading to an autoreactive immune response, ultimately contributing to melanocyte disappearance in vitiligo. We will explore the genetic data available, the specific role of damage-associated-molecular patterns, and

Therapists' cues influence lower limb muscle activation and kinematics during gait training in subacute stroke.

PURPOSE: Symmetrical gait is a key goal of rehabilitation post-stroke. Therapists employ techniques such as verbal instruction and haptic cues to increase activation of paretic muscles. We examined whether verbal or tactile cueing altered spatiotemporal gait parameters, kinematics and electromyography (EMG) of lower limb muscles on the more-affected side within a training session. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients (n = 10) were recruited from rehabilitation services (<9 months post-stroke). Tactile (to the hip muscles) or verbal cues were provided on two testing days, 7-10 days apart (randomize

Predicting "When" in Discourse Engages the Human Dorsal Auditory Stream: An fMRI Study Using Naturalistic Stories.

UNLABELLED: The hierarchical organization of human cortical circuits integrates information across different timescales via temporal receptive windows, which increase in length from lower to higher levels of the cortical hierarchy (Hasson et al., 2015). A recent neurobiological model of higher-order language processing (Bornkessel-Schlesewsky et al., 2015) posits that temporal receptive windows in the dorsal auditory stream provide the basis for a hierarchically organized predictive coding architecture (Friston and Kiebel, 2009). In this stream, a nested set of internal models generates time-b

Effect of adaptation on object representation accuracy in macaque inferior temporal cortex.

Stimulus repetition produces a decrease of the response in many cortical areas and different modalities. This adaptation is highly prominent in macaque inferior temporal (IT) neurons. Here we ask how these repetition-induced changes in IT responses affect the accuracy by which IT neurons encode objects. This question bears on the functional consequences of adaptation, which are still unclear. We recorded the responses of single IT neurons to sequences of familiar shapes, each shown for 300 msec with an ISI of the same duration. The difference in shape between the two successively presented sti

A physiologically-inspired model reproducing the speech intelligibility benefit in cochlear implant listeners with residual acoustic hearing.

This study introduces a speech intelligibility model for cochlear implant users with ipsilateral preserved acoustic hearing that aims at simulating the observed speech-in-noise intelligibility benefit when receiving simultaneous electric and acoustic stimulation (EA-benefit). The model simulates the auditory nerve spiking in response to electric and/or acoustic stimulation. The temporally and spatially integrated spiking patterns were used as the final internal representation of noisy speech. Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) in stationary noise were predicted for a sentence test using an aut

Can comodulation masking release occur when frequency changes could promote perceptual segregation of the on-frequency and flanking bands?

A common characteristic of natural sounds is that the level fluctuations in different frequency regions are coherent. The ability of the auditory system to use this comodulation is shown when a sinusoidal signal is masked by a masker centred at the signal frequency (on-frequency masker, OFM) and one or more off-frequency components, commonly referred to as flanking bands (FBs). In general, the threshold of the signal masked by comodulated masker components is lower than when masked by masker components with uncorrelated envelopes or in the presence of the OFM only. This effect is commonly refe

Relative salience of envelope and fine structure cues in zebra finch song.

Zebra finches produce a learned song that is rich in harmonic structure and highly stereotyped. More is generally known about how birds learn and produce this song than how they perceive it. Here, zebra finches were trained with operant techniques to discriminate changes in natural and synthetic song motifs. Results show that zebra finches are quite insensitive to changes to the overall envelope of the motif since they were unable to discriminate more than a doubling in inter-syllable interval durations. By contrast, they were quite sensitive to changes in individual syllables. A series of tes
