The association of light trucks and vans with paediatric pedestrian deaths.

The hypothesis that relative to cars, light trucks and vans (including sports utility vehicles) are more likely to result in fatal paediatric pedestrian injury was investigated. It was further hypothesized that this increased risk is a result of head injuries. The study sample consisted of 18 117 police records of motor vehicles involved in crashes in which one or more pedestrians aged 5 to 19 years old was injured or killed. Frequencies and case fatality ratios for each vehicle body type were calculated. A logistic regression analysis was conducted, with light truck or van vs. car as the expo

Vehicle travel speeds and the incidence of fatal pedestrian crashes.

The aim of this study was to estimate the likely effect of reduced travel speeds on the incidence of pedestrian fatalities in Adelaide, Australia. The study was based on the results of detailed investigations of 176 fatal pedestrian crashes in the Adelaide area between 1983 and 1991. The method developed to estimate the effect of reduced travelling speed is described and supported by references to the published literature. A reduction in the speed limit from 60 to 50 km/h was one of four speed reduction scenarios considered. The smallest estimated reduction in fatal pedestrian collisions in th

Pedestrian intoxication and fatal traffic accident injury patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Sixteen percent of all motor-vehicle fatalities are pedestrian, and accidents involving pedestrians are associated with the highest morbidity and mortality rates. Classic pedestrian injury patterns have been described. However, it has been suggested that the pattern may differ if the pedestrian is intoxicated. The role of pedestrian intoxication on motor-vehicle accident injury patterns has not been well-delineated. HYPOTHESIS: Intoxicated pedestrian traffic victims have an injury pattern that is more serious and more rapidly fatal than is the pattern for nondrinking victims. M

Interstate pedestrian crossing: a form of self-destructive behavior?

Emotional conflicts, malassociation with peers, and inadequate family support are not the emergency physician's primary considerations when attending a severely traumatized child. This report makes an appeal for the clinician to determine the sequence of events that preceded the trauma. Attempts should be made to distinguish between intentional and accidental trauma by viewing the event, not in isolation, but rather in the context of potential environmental stress affecting the child and family. Among the multidisciplinary coalition we forge to provide ongoing care for the trauma patient, ther

Pedestrians injuries in the north east region of Jamaica: a cross sectional study.

To describe the sociodemographic data of injured pedestrians, temporal patterns of injury, injury patterns, and the independent predictors of hospital admission. A two year cross-sectional study was conducted at the Saint Ann's Bay Regional Hospital in pedestrians with injuries post collision with a motor vehicle. A census was performed in all patients who received either emergency room treatment, hospital admission, or surgical intervention. A 30-item interviewer questionnaire was administered to collect the data. A logical regression model was used to determine independent predictors for hos

Waiting in crowded places: influence of number of pedestrians, waiting time and obstacles.

At crowded places, like railway platforms at rush hour, the spatial distribution of waiting pedestrians has a significant influence on performance and level of comfort. However, the choice of waiting places and the resulting spatial distribution of the crowd have rarely been studied. This study investigates the effects of obstacles, number of passengers and waiting time on the distribution of waiting passengers. Laboratory experiments were performed using a mock-up platform with three set-ups: without obstacles, with a narrow and a wide obstacle. Density profiles determine preferred waiting pl

Exposure characteristics of ultrafine particles on urban streets and its impact on pedestrians.

In order to investigate the pedestrian exposure characteristics of ultrafine particles (UFPs) on urban streets, both mobile and fixed-point monitoring experiments were conducted. A generalized additive model and a respiratory deposition dose model were used to quantify the influencing factors and potential harm of UFPs, respectively. The results showed that UFPs' hotspots were more likely to manifest at places where vehicles tend to cluster, namely at road intersections and bus stops. The pedestrian bridge had the lowest number concentration of UFPs in comparison with the pedestrian crossing a

Factors Influencing the Smartphone Usage Behavior of Pedestrians: Observational Study on "Spanish Smombies".

BACKGROUND: Smartphone addiction has become a reality accepted by all. Some previous studies have shown that the use of smartphones on public roads while walking is very common among the young population. The term "smombie" or smartphone zombie has been coined for this behavior. Such behavior causes a reduction in the attention given to other pedestrians and drivers and may result in accidents or collisions. However, there are no precise data about how many people use the phone while they are walking on the street. Smartphone usage habits are evolving rapidly, and more in-depth information is

Anatomy of a Crash: Analysis of 102 Pedestrian and Bicyclist Fatalities.

Pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities have increased over the past decade in the United States. Factors proposed to explain this increase include the increased popularity of larger passenger vehicles, road design to accommodate faster-moving traffic, and poor road infrastructure. We analyzed a series of 102 pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities to determine which factors were involved. Results demonstrated substance abuse as the most common pertinent decedent medical history, a disproportionate number of crashes occurred during evening/nighttime hours, and most crashes involved larger passenger ve

Analyzing the time to death of pedestrian fatalities: A copula approach.

INTRODUCTION: The study aims to investigate the instant fatality likelihood and time to death (lag time) of pedestrian fatalities using a copula-based joint modeling framework. The upper level model investigates whether or not the pedestrian died instantly, while the lower level model investigates time to death for pedestrians who did not die instantly. METHOD: The joint model was run on a dataset of 33,615 observations obtained from the Fatality Accident Reporting System for the 2015-2019 period. The effect of roadway and traffic characteristics were investigated on time to death using six c

Applicability of the Madymo Pedestrian Model for forensic fall analysis.

Forensic reconstruction and scenario evaluation are crucial in investigations of suspicious deaths related to falls from a height. In such cases, distinguishing between accidental falls, being pushed or jumping is an important but difficult task, since objective methods to do so are currently lacking. This paper explores the possibility of repurposing a passive rigid body model of a human from commercially available crash simulation software for forensic reconstruction and scenario evaluation of humans dropping from heights. To use this approach, a prerequisite is that the human body model can

Holistic pedestrian safety assessment for average males and females.

OBJECTIVE: An integrated assessment framework that enables holistic safety evaluations addressing vulnerable road users (VRU) is introduced and applied in the current study. The developed method enables consideration of both active and passive safety measures and distributions of real-world crash scenario parameters. METHODS: The likelihood of a specific virtual testing scenario occurring in real life has been derived from accident databases scaled to European level. Based on pre-crash simulations, it is determined how likely it is that scenarios could be avoided by a specific Autonomous Emer

Pedestrian Detection Algorithm for Intelligent Vehicles in Complex Scenarios.

Pedestrian detection is an important aspect of the development of intelligent vehicles. To address problems in which traditional pedestrian detection is susceptible to environmental factors and are unable to meet the requirements of accuracy in real time, this study proposes a pedestrian detection algorithm for intelligent vehicles in complex scenarios. YOLOv3 is one of the deep learning-based object detection algorithms with good performance at present. In this article, the basic principle of YOLOv3 is elaborated and analyzed firstly to determine its limitations in pedestrian detection. Then,

Falling while walking: A hidden contributor to pedestrian injury.

Walking is a sustainable mode of transportation which is beneficial to both individuals and to the broader community, however, there are risks and it is essential that road design and operation provides safe conditions for walking. In Victoria, pedestrians represent one of the most vulnerable road user groups, accounting for approximately 12% of all road fatalities and serious injuries. These figures largely represent injuries where the pedestrian has been struck by a vehicle with the extent of pedestrian-only injuries largely un-reported. Falling while walking may be a significant contributor

Impact speed and a pedestrian's risk of severe injury or death.

This study estimates the risk of severe injury or death for pedestrians struck by vehicles using data from a study of crashes that occurred in the United States in years 1994-1998 and involved a pedestrian struck by a forward-moving car, light truck, van, or sport utility vehicle. The data were weighted to correct for oversampling of pedestrians who were severely injured or killed. Logistic regression was used to adjust for potential confounding related to pedestrian and vehicle characteristics. Risks were standardized to represent the average risk for a pedestrian struck by a car or light tru

Survey of pedestrian detection for advanced driver assistance systems.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs), and particularly pedestrian protection systems (PPSs), have become an active research area aimed at improving traffic safety. The major challenge of PPSs is the development of reliable on-board pedestrian detection systems. Due to the varying appearance of pedestrians (e.g., different clothes, changing size, aspect ratio, and dynamic shape) and the unstructured environment, it is very difficult to cope with the demanded robustness of this kind of system. Two problems arising in this research area are the lack of public benchmarks and the difficulty i
